Roberto Mancini is in tears. What a victory this is for him personally. He has rebuilt Italy from one that failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup finals into the European champions.

    They've been superb.

Roberto Mancini changed things when it needed to be changed. Italy couldn't get in the pockets in the first half but they could in the second half. They found a way. You have to say congratulations to them. They got around it.

If there's one man who can put his arm around them and support them it's Southgate because he's been there. It's going to hurt. There is nothing you can say. They stepped up but football is so, so cruel.

Well done Italy. So sad to have lost on penalties, but what a fantastic tournament for England. And apart from maybe Henderson, who won't be around for the next euros from that squad?

It hurts for England. It's natural. But the lasting emotion for this England side is pride. Both from the players and towards them.

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Once again, England in penalty shootouts, they just don't go together.

I have to say, the better team won on the night. England played well the first half but Italy dominated the second half and extra-time.

Italy just had the edge, England played with a lot of heart, but maybe it just wasn't meant to be at the end of the day.

Italy are the champions of Europe.

They were magnificent in this tournament. So were England. It's been said before, and it will be said again, it is a cruel, cruel way to end any game, never mind a tournament. That's especially true if you're English right now.
