They wont be far away. They have shown during this tournament that they will be there or thereabouts for years to come.

With a World Cup right around the corner, I can only feel that this experience they are going through right now, this hurt this pain they are sharing with the country they will be able to into that tournament as fuel to achieve something special.

As they have done here already.

The Wembley arch fires off the pyrotechnics and lights up in the colours of the Italian flag. That small pocket of Italian fans are lapping it up.

There aren't many England fans left in here but the camera picks up a few with rueful smiles on their faces.

Won't feel like it now, but this tournament has been a big win for the Three Lions.

They deserve their moment. Magnificent from first to last.

Well done Italy but I say it every time, penalties is the worst of all worlds. When you win you haven't really won and when you lose you most certainly have lost.

    Jon

I am glad these young men have Southgate as manager. He'll look after them in defeat and show them how proud he is of them.

We've seen individuals and the team grow. We've seen the nation grow behind the team. Italy controlled the elements of the game. We must give them credit. They deserve their victory.

The effort this England team put in, we felt it so dear to our hearts and we wanted them to get over the line. Finals are won by moments. It can go any way. Penalties are so tough. It's the nature of the game.

Absolutely gutted, but couldn't be prouder of this team. This team have given us such a fantastic few weeks. Thank you.
