Good closing down by Manchester United and they win possession on the edge of their box before breaking but once again they are unable to get into a position to trouble Claudio Bravo, who has had no shots to deal with so far. He's not even had to go behind his goalline to pick up balls from shots off target.

I was a little late arriving at the Etihad Stadium tonight but I was surprised just how many fans were still outside 10 minutes after kick-off.

I would estimate there were at least a couple of thousand rushing about or still queuing to get in.

What with the supporters who routinely leave before the final whistle, I wonder what percentage of ticket holders actually watch the entire game.

Bresla Stephenson: Shocking how empty the Etihad is tonight. If the fans don't care, time to scrap this cup.

Sergio Aguero breaks across the edge of the box, playing a one-two with Raheem Sterling before bending an effort towards the top corner but David de Gea gets a strong hand to it to push behind for a corner, which comes to nothing.

Still, it feels like only a matter of time before the hosts make the breakthrough with the way they are playing.

Nathan House:Man Utd aren’t good enough to play it out from the back, it’s that simple. Things need to be adjusted soon or it’ll be a 90-minute onslaught.

Manchester United are becoming a tiny bit more adventurous and have the ball on the edge of the box with Brandon Williams. He tries to find a team-mate at the far post but City head clear.

    Chris Bevan
    BBC Sport at Etihad Stadium

City have had 73% of possession so far, and it feels like most of that has been in the United half, but the visitors have at least just had a spell where they have strung a few passes together for the first time tonight, even if they still have got nowhere near Claudio Bravo's goal.

Andy Szpuk: If the match at Old Trafford ended up as a walk in the park for City, then this is a stroll around the graveyard for them.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd (3-1 agg)

Manchester United are finally starting to push up the pitch a bit more after a relentless spell of pressure from Manchester City in the opening stages.

The visitors work the ball across the pitch from left to right but there's not many options in the final third and the attack breaks down.

Harry Maguire wags his finger, insisting no penalty and VAR agrees. Can't argue with that when looking at the replays.

Shouts for a penalty as Raheem Sterling goes down under pressure from Harry Maguire as he attacks a Kevin de Bruyne ball into the box.

    VAR will have a look...

Great ball from Ilkay Gundogan - he just chips it in.

But the movement from Sergio Aguero - you can't defend that kind of movement!

  15. GREAT SAVE!published at 7 mins

Man City 0-0 Man Utd (3-1 agg)

BIG save by David de Gea as he stretches out a glove to push away a cushioned Sergio Aguero header that was directed towards the bottom corner. The Manchester United keeper then denied Riyad Mahrez with his boot.

    All City.

Manchester City are denied the game's first corner as the ball strikes the base of the corner flag and stays in play. Nemanja Matic then clears.

He'll be looking for those little pockets of space where he's a real danger.

I wonder how much of a curve ball this Manchester City set up will be for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer?

Manchester United are not venturing out of their own half in these early stages and are happy to let their opponents have the ball.

Rodri tries his luck with a speculative strike from the edge of the box but it is blocked.

Steve Pearson: It's quite amazing how negative some United fans have become. Get behind Ole, personally I think he's doing a great job at the moment, the signing of Fernandes is a good one. Judge him when he has his own players. Tough tonight but you never know. Come on United!

One more goal and you feel City have got enough.

But I'm not completely writing off United - this is a Manchester derby after all.
