City are going for their 20th successive domestic cup win tonight (counting ties they have won on penalties, like last season's Carabao Cup final).

There's already an electric atmosphere here, with both sets fans making themselves heard.

  5. Postpublished at 19:46 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2020

The atmosphere has picked up at the Etihad as the players walk out onto the pitch. There are a few blue spots of empty seats but doesn't appear to be loads.

Not a bad attendance for the end of the month on a chilly Wednesday night.

  7. 'Maguire has to take responsibility'published at 19:44 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2020

Man City v Man Utd 3-1 agg (19:45 GMT)

    Dion Dublin
Former Man Utd striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Now he's captain, I expect Harry Maguire to take on responsibility on the pitch. He has to tell players what he wants them to do.

Especially if they're struggling at set-pieces. He's got it in him to be a good leader, I just hope the extra responsibility doesn't take away from his ability to become a truly great centre-back.

Villa beat a very good Leicester side. They've also got a good result against Man Utd and pushed Liverpool and Arsenal all the way this season. Couple that with scoring 19 goals in the competition so far and a recent Wembley win under their belt I don't think they'll be a walkover.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is in attendance at the Etihad tonight.

The 48-year-old's home was attacked by a group chanting that he was "going to die". A video posted on social media showed an individual throwing a red flare over a large gate, while others sang songs aimed at Woodward.

Woodward, who is married with two young children, was not present at the time.

City will miss Laporte and Fernandinho badly. Hopefully Sterling can step up to the plate tonight, he's been woeful since Christmas.

  11. 'Not a good transfer window for United'published at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2020

Man City v Man Utd 3-1 agg (19:45 GMT)

    Ian Dennis
Radio 5 live senior football reporter

I think, even with the signing of Bruno Fernandes, it's not a good window for United.

They still need a defender, they still need a striker, and they've taken so long to get this one over the line - there's virtually no time left to bring anyone else in.

  12. Team news - Rodri preferred to Stones at centre-backpublished at 19:35 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2020

Manchester City make five changes from the side that brushed Fulham aside in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Just as in the first leg of this semi-final, when he went with a strikerless 4-4-2 system, Pep Guardiola has got a few people here guessing about his formation, but it looks like Rodri will play at centre-back alongside Nicolas Otamendi - despite John Stones being available, and on the bench.

Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne, Raheem Sterling return to the starting line-up, along with Rodri and Kyle Walker, with Gabriel Jesus among those dropping to the bench. Aymeric Laporte, who recently returned from a five-month lay-off, is not in the squad.

Man City XI: Bravo, Walker, Rodri, Otamendi, Cancelo, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Bernardo; Sterling, Aguero, Mahrez

Manchester United make four changes from their big weekend FA Cup win at Tranmere.

David de Gea is back in goal, full-backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams return to the defence and Fred is in midfield.

Nemanja Matic makes the starting line-up after recovering from a knock he picked up at Prenton Park.

Man Utd XI: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Williams, Shaw, Fred, Matic, Lingard, Martial, Greenwood

As everyone knows we (City) need another centre-back, but it's obviously not gonna happen till summer. Praying Laporte can stay fit until then!

Can see a low-scoring draw. Would suit both teams - City reach final, United avoid an embarrassing aggregate defeat.

  14. Why this game is not a sell-outpublished at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2020

Man City v Man Utd 3-1 agg (19:45 GMT)

    Chris Bevan

If you are on Twitter, brace yourself for more screen grabs of empty seats from the Etihad Stadium on your feed tonight, because this game is not a sell-out.

It is a contentious topic, and there seems to have been a clamour this week to criticise a) City - for not being a big club b) their fans - for not turning up or c) their manager - for answering questions about it.

But there are reasons why around 4,000 tickets have remained unsold for a Manchester derby - and they are the same as the explanation for Old Trafford being around 7,000 short of capacity for the first leg.

Security issues in recent derbies saw the away teams in both legs given reduced allocations of 2,800 tickets each, rather than 10% of total capacity as is the norm for the League Cup.

And although the game is available on general sale, if you want to buy a ticket you have to have a purchase history with City, to ensure segregation.

Travelling Monkey: United were too slow with Fernandes, look at Inter, three players in (almost four), in the same time frame of this Bruno saga. Need to get it sorted.

Matthew Simon: With David Silva leaving this year and Aguero and Fernandinho the next, this summer's window will be the more crucial one for City to find leaders in the long term. Although it is almost two years to the day when we signed Laporte who has become invaluable.

  16. 'We need the same mentality'published at 19:24 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2020

Manchester City's Nicolas Otamendi has just said there is no way he and his team-mates will be thinking of it as job done before kick off.

"We need to finish the job in the second leg after a good game away," he said.

"Playing at home with our fans is a big advantage, but we need to go with the same mentality, as if it was just 90 minutes. Hopefully we’ll get the job done and go through to another final."

  17. Any extra-time?published at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2020

Man City v Man Utd 3-1 agg (19:45 GMT)

What happens if Manchester United score twice and get it to 3-3 at the end of 90 minutes?

Well, away goals do not count and there's no extra time so it would be straight to penalties.

  18. 'There's a risk of a United comeback for City'published at 19:18 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2020

Man City v Man Utd 3-1 agg (19:45 GMT)

    Dion Dublin
Former Man Utd striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think City will have to be on it. Pep knows if they're 85% on it then they'll win the game, but there's still a risk of a United comeback.

United won here in December and they're capable of doing it again.

  19. Never say never?published at 19:16 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2020

Is the tie over with a healthy two-goal advantage for Manchester City?

Well, Manchester United have progressed from two of their last three knockout ties when losing the first leg by two goals, eliminating Olympiakos and PSG in the Champions League last 16 in 2013-14 and 2018-19 respectively.

    Never say never.
