Jermain Defoe has a great temperament and doesn't show his frustration. But you can see his desperation to score in a game that doesn't suit him because Stranraer sit so deep

I still think Stranraer have been superb with their application and work rate and it's a bit of fortune that Rangers get. It's not a great corner and it has come off Edmundson's leg before it drops to Arfield, who goes at it with his left foot

  4. HALF-TIME Rangers 1-0 Stranraerpublished at 20:36 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2020

Rangers have the lead their domination of possession and pressure, but it looked like their part-time opponents were going to reach half-time having frustrated their more illustrious hosts until Scott Arfield's late strike.

Steven Gerrard's took advantage of a stroke of luck as they were handed a disputed corner kick and will be hoping to build on that after the break.

Stranraer now have to come out a bit more after the break if they are to stay in the cup.

  6. GOAL! Rangers 1-0 Stranraerpublished at 44mins

    Scott Arfield

Just when it looks like Stranraer were going to survive until half-time, Rangers go ahead - and they are lucky to do so.

They are handed a corner when it looked like Scott Arfield had touched the ball first.

The resulting set-piece reaches the midfielder after team-mate George Edmundson makes a mess of his attempted flick and he prods it home from 15 yards.

Stranraer midfielder Jamie Hamill is fortunate not to be shown a red card as he flies into a tackle that leaves Andy Halliday with stud marks down the inside of his knee.

The Rangers full-back hobbles off before Stranraer manage to clear the resulting free-kick.

Rangers aren't getting desperate by any manner of means, but they could use a goal. If they can Stranraer will open up and then Rangers will enjoy the game a lot more

The longer this goes on, Stranraer's belief will grow that they can cause a surprise.

They are certainly putting their bodies on the line.

John Beaton is searching for a number to see who the culprit is. Carlo Pignatiello cleaned Aribo out. It was just mistimed. It was correct to play advantage for Halliday. It was late but purely accidental.

    Rangers 0-0 Stranraer

Yet more pressure by Rangers as Andy Halliday's low drive is blocked by goalkeeper Max Currie's outstretched leg before Joe Aribo sends a shot skimming off the grass and wide.

    Rangers 0-0 Stranraer

Ryan Jack is next to threaten for Rangers, but the midfielder's curling drive takes a deflection as it goes just wide of the far post.

Nikola Katic makes a mess of his header from the resulting corner.

    Quote Message

Rangers have used Patterson really well on the right side, but they have to use the left side more. Just to make the pitch big and offer a different problem

Halliday playing a lovely little ball in to Defoe and he is aware of the run of Jack coming in late, so he plays a reverse and its a lovely take from Jack

  17. GREAT SAVE!published at 21mins

    Rangers 0-0 Stranraer

Jermain Defoe is in the thick of the action. The veteran former England striker plays in Ryan Jack cleverly only for the midfielder's shot to be blocked at point-blank range by Stranraer goalkeeper Max Currie.

Defoe then somehow can't get an outstretched toe to a fine cross from Nathan Patterson that finds his team-mate unmarked 10 yards out.

    Quote Message

Do you know what I like about Patterson? He doesn't waste any time. He doesn't second guess himself. There's a space there, so he puts the ball in and there's nothing worse than a winger or full-back that dithers on the ball

  20. Postpublished at 16mins

It's Nikola Katic's turn to head over the crossbar as he rises to meet a Steven Davis corner as Rangers continue to press.
