    Quote Message

There may be personnel changes, but the way Rangers play won't. And that will be so good for young Patterson out on the right. Stranraer will play really narrow and both Rangers full-backs will be on the ball all night

  2. Postpublished at 13mins

    Rangers 0-0 Stranraer

Rangers are finding space on the wings and Scott Arfield sends in a cross that finds Jordan Jones in the six-yard box, but the winger heads over under pressure.

  3. Postpublished at 11mins

    Rangers 0-0 Stranraer

We wondered where Jamie Hamill would play as he spent much of his career in midfield, but the former Hearts veteran is patrolling the area in front of the Stranraer midfield.

  4. 'Floated balls up to Stevenson can work'published at 19:58 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2020

    Rangers 0-0 Stranraer

    Neil McCann
Former Hearts & Rangers winger on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

The balls up to Stevenson are exactly what he needs. It was a floated ball somewhere in and around his chest area, were he can use his big frame. And he can try and get Stranraer up the pitch

  5. Postpublished at 8mins

    Rangers 0-0 Stranraer

A first real look at Nathan Patterson and the 18-year-old sends in a curling, James Tavernier-like cross towards the front post.

Jermain Defoe's glancing header drifts well wide of the far post though.

  6. Stevenson lone man up frontpublished at 7mins

    Rangers 0-0 Stranraer

Ryan Stevenson played much of his career as an attacking midfielder, but the 35-year-old is being used as a lone striker tonight.

He is looking a bit chunkier than in his Hearts and St Johnstone days and you imagine the veteran won't trouble the Rangers defence with his pace.

  7. Postpublished at 4mins

    Rangers 0-0 Stranraer

As expected, it is all Rangers in the early moments. So far, they have not troubled the Stranraer defence though.

  9. 'I'm excited for Patterson' - Gerrardpublished at 19:47 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2020

    Rangers v Stranraer (19:45)

All eyes will be on exciting, young right-back Nathan Patterson tonight and none will befocussing on his performance quite as much as Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

Speaking to Premier Sports, he explained why the 18-year-old talent is such an exciting prospect.

"He's full of energy," he says. "He's very athletic. He's got a fantastic profile. He's still a boy, but at some point he'll become a man. He's got all the talent. We've got to help him and put everything around that talent.

"I'm someone who wants to give these academy kids an opportunity. He's trained with us now 20 times and every time he has he hasn't looked out of place. He's pushing the people that are in front of him.

"So I want to give him an opportunity tonight to see how he handles the crowd. Let's see how he handles this occasion. I'm excited for him."

  12. 'I want an Old Firm performance' - Gerrardpublished at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2020

    Rangers v Stranraer (19:45)

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is hoping his side can restart the second half of the season as well as they ended the first half.

Speaking to Premier Sports, he says: "It's all about our attitude and our mentality. With all due respect, we have to forget the opposition and try and take off where we left behind in terms of the Old Firm. So I want that type of performance."

The Rangers manager has gone with a starting XI full of back-up players and a notable start for young right-back Nathan Patterson and Gerrard is hopeful that they can repay him with good performances.

"I've made changes to give some people an opportunity tonight who have been waiting and been patient," he says.

"So I'm really looking forward to seeing how they play. But I've got a good spine throughout the team to help some of the young lads or players that haven't played as much. So I'm looking forward to seeing how they perform."

  13. Big crowd expectedpublished at 19:39 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2020

    Rangers v Stranraer (19:45)

Ibrox is filling up handsomely despite the fact that most consider this game to be a foregone conclusion and Steven Gerrard has taken the chance to give some fringe players a chance to impress.

  14. Stevenson's big-time returnpublished at 19:36 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2020

    Rangers v Stranraer (19:45)

Ryan Stevenson has made a senior comeback with Stranraer after the 35-year-old former Hearts and St Johnstone midfielder switched from junior side Troon and opened up about his mental health problems.

He told BBC Scotland: "For all the boys, it’s a good distraction from the league position that we’re in just now. For everyone involved in the club, from the players to the staff to the fans. I think it's going to be a great night.

"I obviously missed out in the cup final when I left Hearts and they went on and beat Hibs 5-1, but I’ve had a good couple of runs. Obviously never reaching the final, so this will a good experience for me obviously coming back and playing again in the senior game.

"It’s given me a massive opportunity again. When I retired at 31, I felt as if I had to. I was in a difficult place at the time and I felt as if I needed some time away and then obviously the last three or four months I had been thinking should and could I get back into the game.

"For me, there’s a bit of pressure on me this time to repay the faith from them and the club for giving me the opportunity."

  17. Longworth repeat a longshot?published at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2020

    Rangers v Stranraer (19:45)

Rangers, second in the Premiership, are unbeaten in five games since losing the League Cup final to Celtic and are seeking a fifth consecutive victory, while Stranraer are seven points adrift at the foot of the third tier and have not won in six outings.

However, they have drawn their most recent two games, the most recent being a 3-3 draw away to Clyde when they squandered a 2-0 lead despite their hosts being down to 10 men.

The two sides have only met on eight occasions previously, with Rangers winning all apart from that 1-1 draw at Ibrox in December 2013 while the Ibrox side were down in League One.

“I’m sure there will be a fantastic turnout and they’ll be happy and buzzing.

“This is a very important competition for us. We’ll have respect and show a good attitude going into the game.”

No matter what level Rangers are at and what team they play, this would be the biggest Scottish Cup shock of all time if Stranraer were to win given the different levels of finance. If they get a 2-0 or 3-0 defeat, they will be doing well
