After breaking our record transfer fee with a £22m move for Sander Berge, it looks like the Blades are nailed on to make another signing later.

Panagiotis Retsos is a mobile central defender who currently plays for Bayer Leverkeusen, perfect long-term competition for Chris Basham. If this one comes off, it signals that this transfer window is one of succession planning for Chris Wilder.

Tottenham are willing to allow Kenya midfielder Victor Wanyama to leave the club - but only if their £8m asking price is met. According to the Mirror, external, Celtic are interested in the 28-year-old.

Wanyama spent a couple of years with Celtic earlier in his career and I seem to remember him scoring in a famous win over Barcelona at Parkhead.

  7. 'Fernandes will be worth every pound'published at 07:47 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

    Bruno FernandesImage source, Getty Images

Portuguese football writer Jose Delgado on Bruno Fernandes:

"He'll be worth every pound because he is a fantastic player. Manchester United have a very good player who can be the start of them rebuilding their team.

"He is humble, he is not someone who thinks he is a star and you can see that when he plays for the national side with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo. In Manchester he will have the emotional intelligence to do his job and find his place.

"He can be a leader in the future and I think he will impose himself by the work he does."

  8. 18 for Fernandes?published at 07:43 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

So Manchester United finally got a deal over the line for Bruno Fernandes on Thursday but which number will he wear at Old Trafford.

The number seven and number 11 shirts are both vacant at the minute but are both pretty iconic at United. George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs have all worn those numbers down the years.

But is this Instagram post from agent Miguel Ruben Pinho, a bit of a giveaway?

Paul Scholes and more recently Ashley Young, have worn the number 18 shirt for United in the past.

  11. Dembele to Gillingham?published at 07:30 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

BBC Radio Kent's Ben Watts: Will it be a busy day for Gillingham boss Steve Evans and chairman Paul Scally?

Celtic boss Neil Lennon said in his press conference yesterday that they'd turned down a bid from Gills to take teenage winger Karamoko Dembele on loan. Bhoys fan Evans worked with Dembele's older brother Siriki while he was manager at Peterborough.

Gillingham defender Lee Hodson's return to the Scottish Premiership with St Mirren was also confirmed yesterday. Reports north of the border suggest Watford loanee Alex Jakubiak could also be heading to Paisley. The 23-year-old is the Medway club's top scorer with six league goals, but he's fallen out of favour and only started five times since September.

His exit would free up another matchday squad loan space at ME7 (Gills currently use the maximum of five) - Wolves winger Jordan Graham, who is out of contract in the summer, has been linked.

  13. 'I'd love to see Chilwell in a City shirt'published at 07:25 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

    Manchester City

Nigel Rothband - The Man City Show Podcast

Manchester City need to strengthen in defence. John Stones seems to have lost a bit of confidence, there are questions about Nicolas Otamendi and Eric Garcia is still cutting his teeth at the top level. A back-up keeper is required and issues still persist at left-back. Benjamin Mendy has not had a decent run of games to establish himself and neither Angelino nor Oleksandr Zinchenko seem quite good enough.

Ben Chilwell is a player I'd love to see in a City shirt. He would fit into the system well, has pace and is a great crosser of the ball. Potentially Spurs may not qualify for the Champions League next season, so if they want to cash in on Harry Kane, he may be the perfect replacement for Sergio Aguero.

Claudio Bravo has won some silverware during his time at Etihad Stadium but a more reliable replacement is now required. Joining him through the exit door could be Otamendi, Angelino and possibly Stones. I don't want to see Leroy Sane leave once he returns to full fitness; we need his pace and competition for that position.

  14. What's it like being a player on deadline day?published at 07:21 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

Micah Richards has been through it all on deadline day.

He made a late move from Manchester City to Fiorentina - flying over unsure that he'd pass the medical - and has also suffered the disappointment of an enticing move to a European giant falling through.

The reason the latter deal fell through? Some classic-deadline day confusion.

  15. Winter window winners?published at 07:19 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

Swindon Town fans have certainly had a rollercoaster of a transfer window.

First they lost prolific scorer Eoin Doyle - who has scored more goals than any player in Europe's top divisions with 23 league goals - when he was recalled by Bradford.

Then they lost fellow striker Jerry Yates - who has 12 goals this season - when he was recalled by Rotherham.

That left the Robins with their entire strikeforce gone but then Yates returned before Doyle signed permanently yesterday.

If any club has had a better window than Swindon, I've yet to see it.

  16. Man Utd's Joshua King bid rebuffedpublished at 07:18 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United did ask about Bournemouth forward Joshua King but were told the Norwegian was going nowhere.

There is a link to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer through not only nationality but also the fact the current United manager coached King during the early days of his career.

United are in the hunt for a striker and King, who has only scored three goals this season, appeared to fit the bill.

    Bournemouth didn't think so.

  18. 'Can't see anyone leaving'published at 07:10 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

    Arsenal

Akhil Vyas - Arsenal Supporters' Trust

I think most people would say we have a need at centre-back and I wouldn't disagree. Losing Calum Chambers to injury was a blow and with Shkodran Mustafi (whatever people think of him) now out, it leaves us short. Mikel Arteta has certainly got us organised, so having an additional option may help him in the three competitions we are still in.

As I think we are a bit short, I wouldn't like to see anyone leave. Even the young players such as Eddie Nketiah are getting chances, so I can't see anyone leaving.

  20. January can be kind...published at 07:05 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2020

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former Derby and Swansea manager Paul Clement: "I had a good experience of the January window when I was at Swansea. It is traditionally a difficult window, it is shorter than summer and clubs do not want to sell their best players which is what you are looking for.

"We bought four players each costing £4m and they all had an impact in us staying in the Premier League - Tom Carroll, Jordan Ayew, Martin Olsson and Luciano Narsingh. We had real difficulties in January, we were in the relegation zone and we managed to stay up. It was good business."
