I thought that was going to sneak in at the far post. He didn't catch it all, Phil Foden.

Foden's had a great game. Villa have got to stop City getting into shooting positions in and around the box.

Aston Villa build an attack but an Ahmed Elmohamady cross is too deep and Manchester City will launch their own assault. Sergio Aguero goes down and is fouled. Free-kick around 35 yards from goal, right side.

Ilkay Gundogan takes it, headed away by Tyrone Mings.... Phil Foden will hit it.... bounces wide.

Villa make it up to halfway as Rodri concedes a throw. And Dean Smith's side knock the ball around before going long from goalkeeper Orjan Nyland to the right flank.

City have a throw and build slowly themselves. A timid start to the second period and a poor Zinchenko cross goes out for a goal kick.

Here we go then. A 45 minutes like the first one will do us nicely (unless you're a Villa fan of course).

Villa probably didn't want the half-time whistle to come. They had a reaction - they're back in the game. They have to go forward, be positive. They've got to give everything.

Samatta at the moment is completely isolated - the ball goes forward, it comes straight back at them. Be a bit braver. Find Jack Grealish.

  10. Can Villa grasp the lifelinepublished at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2020

Just as Manchester City were knocking the ball around imperiously and threatening to move out of sight, Villa have that goal back.

It was an unlikely development as they were being outclassed but suddenly the mood has changed.

Can Villa cash in or will it only provoke Manchester City?

Terry text us earlier (17:08 GMT) and said he was switching off to watch Titanic. This just in from James...

Titanic alternative ending - Rose realises there is room on that 20ft door for Jack to climb on. Villa also turn things around too.

  13. '2-1 is a good score for Villa'published at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2020

HT: Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester City

    Dion Dublin
Former Man Utd striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Villa have just been outpossession-ed, I'd say, outplayed as well. Defensively, they've switched off a couple of times and that's where the goals have come from. City are making the game so big, so wide and Villa haven't dealt with it. So 2-1 at half-time is a good score for Villa.

Apparently Pep Guardiola has punched a pitch side advertising board. Not because he didn't like the message being spread, more so because he didn't like the defending for the Villa goal.

Looking at replays I can confirm:

    1) John Stones fell under no challenge. He was back pedalling and kind of just tripped over himself. It happens.

    2) When the finish was applied Prince William clenched his two fists and let out a "yes". Like Macaulay Culkin when he was tormenting Harry and Marv in Home Alone.

If Villa can get to the break like this they have had a touch. Don't get me wrong, they started well but then looked like they were going to be totally finished off by the interval.

Now there is hope and suddenly the game has gone a bit crazy again with the ball pinging around like a hot potato.

I'm trying to figure out how John Stones fell over... he had an eye on Mbwana Samatta, he fell over, that means Samatta is free and it's a great cross - and Samatta finishes absolutely great. This has given Villa a bit of a lifeline, and all the fans in claret and blue have woken up!

    Mbwana Samatta

They are dancing in the streets of Tanzania.

The people of Dar Es Salaam rejoice.

Their boy, Mbwana Samatta has profited from a John Stones fall.

When the defender lost his feet, the Villa striker took no prisoners and headed for the box unmarked, waiting for a cross from the left to pick him out so he could finish with a diving header.

Ruthless stuff. Villa were out, finished, done. Not so now...
