  4. 'Big two months coming up' for Pompeypublished at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2020

    Portsmouth 0-2 Arsenal

Portsmouth will now focus on winning promotion from League One and next month's EFL Trophy final where they will take about 50,000 fans to Wembley.

"Portsmouth is a great club, whatever division it is in, it is one of major clubs in the country," boss Kenny Jackett told BBC Sport.

"For us it has been a busy period: we had eight games in January, we had eight in February and seven in March so we always have to change the side to have fresh energy.

"We are close to the promotion places and it is a big two months coming up.

"We are proud of what we have done in the FA Cup. We were the last League One side in it and it has taken a genuinely big club to knock us out.

"Now we have two other competitions where we need to focus."

  5. Getting the first goal was key - Jackettpublished at 22:16 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2020

    Portsmouth 0-2 Arsenal

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett, speaking to BBC Sport: "The moments when we were up and around their box, we needed one of those moments to go for us.

"They got the blocks from some good balls in, David Luiz got a few in and Martinez claimed a couple, it was a situation then where we needed to go in 0-0 at half-time.

"I was frustrated with the first goal and then we were left chasing. Chasing Arsenal is tough, they can make you pay.

"In terms of winning the game, getting the first goal would have been key and with the pressure we had, we needed one.

"But after their second they dominated and it would have been a goal out of nothing from us. Then realistically we were playing damage limitation, my players didn't buckle, kept going and that was good."

  6. 'I'm seeing a lot of things I'm happy with'published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2020

    Portsmouth 0-2 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to BT Sport: "It's a difficult place to come but I have faith in these kids. They always respond and I always knew they would do that. They have to learn from the difficult moments and manage them but they have the talent and desire and look how hard they work.

"The clean sheet is really important and we defended set-pieces much better.

"We have pace in a few players up front. Reiss [Nelson] is a special player and can eliminate players one on one. He's been out for a while but he's back now and he showed what he's capable of doing.

"I'm really enjoying working with this group of players,. It's a process. I know everything has to be today or yesterday but in football it doesn't happen like this. I'm seeing a lot of things I'm happy with but there is a lot of room to improve.

On Lucas Torreira's injury: "Lucas was very sore and is in a brace. He will be assessed in a few days and then we will know more."

  7. 'Arsenal's young players are worth the risk'published at 22:09 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2020

    Portsmouth 0-2 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to BBC Sport: "I'm really pleased with them [the youngsters]. I'm enjoying working with the players. They deserve a chance. It's always a risk but they're worth the risk.

"It was a great atmosphere and Portsmouth made it difficult. We knew we'd have moments we could suffer but we reacted and got control of the game. We got two goals and could have had a few more.

"Pablo Mari has looked good in training. He's lacking rhythm but very good."

    On the FA Cup...

"There is a long way to go. But we're on the right path. We'll see what happens in the draw. We'll keep going because we love this competition."

    FT: Portsmouth 0-2 Arsenal

Portsmouth will be hoping to see Arsenal on a more regular basis by climbing back up to the Premier League. Or maybe not...

Pompey haven’t beaten Arsenal in any competition since winning a league match 5-4 in March 1958, drawing eight and losing 14 of their 22 meetings since then. Drought.

  9. 'We needed to get in to half-time at 0-0'published at 22:03 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2020

    FT: Portsmouth 0-2 Arsenal

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett to BT Sport: "We had moments around their box. But they got blocks in and defended well. When we got deliveries in, Emiliano Martinez caught them. We needed those moments and the goal... we needed to get in to half-time at 0-0 and build the tempo in the second half.

"Being 2-0 down against Arsenal, any side in the country will find it difficult. They can get their tails up and make you pay. It can be a lot more than 2-0. We couldn't quite get that goal back. The better side won.

"It's been a great cup run. I'm disappointed we couldn't take it further but we played against a good side and a good club. We have to put it behind us and look forward."

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says midfielder Lucas Torreira, who was carried off on a stretcher after a firm but fair challenge by Portsmouth defender James Bolton, is in a brace and will be assessed over the next few days.

    More from him shortly.

  11. 'We're eager to take our chances'published at 22:01 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2020

    Arsenal

Arsenal goalscorer Eddie Nketiah: "They made it hard for us and they came out fast. We fought and battled well and to win 2-0 is a great achievement. All the young boys - and the senior players - did really well and took their opportunities.

"We take all competitions very seriously. At the moment we are getting chances and we are all eager to take them - we want to do as well as we can."

    Arsenal

Arsenal goalscorer Eddie Nketiah: "The goals came at the right time, we knew we were in for a hard game, knew the first goal would settle things.

"Then we kept pressing and going for the third. It was a great performance from the team.

"The manager said to keep going and up our intensity in the second half. We played quicker, gaps appeared and that's when we played out best football."

Arsenal skipper David Luiz, who was named man of the match: "I think it is important to do the job we are doing every single day, since Mikel came we have done well.

"We need to be humble and understand we are not there yet.

"Tonight I was pleased with the team and the young boys, they have a great mentality and understand what is need at a high level. We need to be ready to react and understand football.

"The clean sheet was great, this is the kind of things have to learn, we did it great tonight. Everyone is 100% focused.

"I say to the young lads 'you are starting with a great opportunity at a big club. I'm the oldest in the tea,m but inside my heart is young forever!"

Goals change games and that's what happened. The goal took the wind out of Portsmouth's sails. Arsenal were a different team in the second half. If they were under pressure they just took the steam out of it by keeping the ball.

Pompey huffed and puffed. But Arsenal defended the middle of their goal very well and dealt with everything Pompey threw at them.

If you go a goal down, Arsenal don't have to come out and attack and it becomes a very difficult task. Arsenal were good value for their 2-0 win.

I'm not sure Arsenal would have got a clean sheet here under Unai Emery. They've shown more resilience. They're on the way I think, they're more difficult to beat. Mikel Arteta will be pleased with what he's seen.

Arsenal just love the FA Cup, don't they? Don't dare say it is Mickey Mouse competition these days.

The Gunners have reached the quarter final stage in five of the past seven seasons - but the first time since 2016-17. They went on to win the competition that season, of course.

Very efficient from Arsenal. Handshakes all around as they take the acclaim of the away end. David Luiz has a word with Reiss Nelson to explain a few things, obviously spotted some things which he reckons the young winger can improve on.
