What we've got is an incompetent referee. He's missed the foul on Sean Clare, he should have given Rangers a penalty as well, he's missed a Hearts penalty and a hand ball from Edmundson, and he's not given a second yellow for Damour's hand ball. He's missed things time after time. Why is the guy refereeing at this level? That's four major decisions.

How will Steven McLean bounce back in this second half? He must know he's had one in the first 45 minutes.

Without that drama, we would have had precious little to talk about at half-time.

    Tom English
    BBC Scotland's chief sports writer

    Quote Message

Rangers should've had a penalty earlier in the half, but the scenes at the end of the half are just crazy. It was clearly a handball by Edmundson, but it was the clearest penalty you'd see prior to that. Are we watching beach volleyball out there?

  9. Confusion reignspublished at 18:26 Greenwich Mean Time 29 February 2020

    HT: Hearts 0-0 Rangers

We literally didn't know if the goal had stood for a full minute as the players trudged up the tunnel. Farcical. Anyway, it's ultimately the correct decision.

However, referee Steven McLean has missed two pretty clear penalty calls, one for each side, in that first half.

  10. 'There's no monitor down here'published at 18:24 Greenwich Mean Time 29 February 2020

    HT: Hearts 0-0 Rangers

    Quote Message

I know for a fact [fourth official] Willie Collum hasn't seen a monitor. There's no monitor down here in the technical area and he hasn't seen it. It should have been a penalty before the disallowed goal, but the Hearts player threw both hands towards the ball.

  11. Postpublished at 18:21 Greenwich Mean Time 29 February 2020

    Hearts 0-0 Rangers

Right. It's still goalless. Hearts had the ball in the back of the net courtesy of Loic Damour, but he's basically used two hands to push it into the net! He's already been booked, too.

It seemed the goal had stood, Rangers were going mental and finally after some consultation with the officials it was chalked off.

Just before that Rangers defender George Edmundson clearly handled the ball in the box, but no penalty was given.

Got all that? My, drama after a fairly tepid first half.

  13. HALF-TIME- Hearts 0-0 Rangerspublished at 18:18 Greenwich Mean Time 29 February 2020

  14. Postpublished at 45 mins

We literally don't know the score...Hearts have the ball in the net, but was it a handball?

  15. Postpublished at 45 mins

    Hearts 0-0 Rangers

Hearts have a free-kick right on the edge of the box...

  16. CLOSE!published at 44 mins

    Hearts 0-0 Rangers

James Tavernier curls in a delicious cross, which is cut out by Craig Halkett, but it falls to Ryan Jack who clatters a volley towards goal and it goes just a few inches wide. Rangers' best chance so far.

  17. Souttar updatepublished at 18:13 Greenwich Mean Time 29 February 2020

    Hearts 0-0 Rangers

    Brian McLauchlin
    BBC Sport Scotland

It is an Achilles injury for John Souttar, it's a different foot this time. It looks like it's going to be a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

  18. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Hearts 0-0 Rangers

Steven Naismith flicks another header towards goal, which goes just wide. He was offside anyway, though.

Fair to say this isn't a classic.

  19. 'A penalty without a doubt'published at 18:08 Greenwich Mean Time 29 February 2020

    Hearts 0-0 Rangers

    Allan Preston
    BBC Scotland summariser on Sportsound

    Quote Message

What a period of play. It should have been a penalty kick, without a doubt. I think the referee's put himself in a difficult position because he hasn't given the foul against Sean Clare, so he couldn't give the penalty.

  20. YELLOW CARD - Loic Damour (Hearts)published at 38 mins

    Hearts 0-0 Rangers

Damour goes in the book for the latest foul on Ryan Kent, who's been really bright in the last 10 minutes or so. The Hearts midfielder tugged him back.
