But Rangers will want to make sure that the gap at the top is back down to 13 before Neil Lennon's side visit Ibrox a week tomorrow for the latest Old Firm derby.

To do that, Steven Gerrard's stuttering side have to beat Ross County tomorrow in Dingwall.

More immediately for them, they will want to boost their flagging confidence ahead of Thursday's first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen.

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths is delighted to find his scoring touch as he aims for a Scotland recall ahead of this month's Euro 2020 play-off semi-final with Israel.

"It's always nice to get back on the scoresheet, but to get three is extra special," he tells BBC Scotland.

"I try to work on my finishing every day. The more minutes I play, the more chance I've got to score goals and it's going to increase my confidence going into these qualifiers."

Hearts manager Daniel Stendel praised his side's battling qualities but admitted they must be better in defence.

"Everybody knows that we are fighting well and tried to win this game against one of the best teams this year," he tells BBC Sportsound. "It's not easy when you have to win every week.

"We are not stable enough at the moment. It was more our fault for their goal.

"In the second-half, we brought on another striker in Liam Boyce and it worked for a while.

"But, after this, we want too much too quick and we need a little bit more patience. When we play more in possession, we have more chances."

Cove Rangers survive a two-goal fightback from bottom side Brechin City to secure a win that retains their 10-point lead in the fourth tier.

Edinburgh City keep pace with a convincing win over Albion Rovers, while third-top Cowdenbeath were held away to Annan Athletic.

Elgin move into fourth after a 3-1 win over Stirling thanks to Queen's Park drawing away to Stenhousemuir.

Kilmarnock manager Alex Dyer says defeat to 10-man Hamilton will make it difficult for his side to finish in the top six.

"It's a big dent, it's a massive dent," he tells BBC Scotland. "It was a chance today to close the gap. We've got three games to go and we've got to try and win three games.

"The boys were unprofessional at the end of the day. They went down to 10 men, we had control of the game, a lot of chances but not being clinical and then we let them in from some rash play.

"We've had good opportunities. We played well in parts of the game. It's unprofessional that we've given them a sniff and at this level you get punished."

Three teams at the top of League One - Raith Rovers, Falkirk and Airdrieonians - extend their advantage over the pack after they each enjoyed home wins.

Montrose narrow the gap with fourth-top East Fife after a convincing win over bottom side Stranraer and the Fifers' defeat in Airdrie.

Meanwhile, Clyde move 10 points clear of the relegation play-off spot after a win over Dumbarton.

Dundee United's rocky form continues with a draw at home to bottom side Partick Thistle, but Robbie Neilson's team still extend their lead to 17 points after Inverness Caledonian Thistle's defeat away to Alloa Athletic.

Ayr missed a chance to move ahead of the Highlanders into second as they were held at home by fourth-top Dundee.

Dunfermline, Arbroath and Morton similarly could only draw.

Such a tight league is the second tier.

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright praised goalscorer Callum Hendry and provider Drey Wright after the win over Livingston.

"Both teams tried to create moments that could win them the game," he tells BBC Scotland. "I think we got the one moment of real quality.

"It was a great ball in from Drey and good movement from Callum to get the finish. We said at half time it might take a moment of quality or a mistake and fortunately we got that moment of quality. Both sides have played a lot better and will play a lot better.

"We'd actually thought about taking Hendry off, but we kept him on that wee bit longer. He’s got a big future ahead of him."

Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson believes his side should have had a penalty - and was disappointed not to take all three points against an open Hearts side.

"I thought it was a penalty on Jermaine Hylton," Robinson tells BBC Sportsound. "He [goalkeeper Bobby Zlamal] made no contact with the ball at all and for me it's a penalty.

"I'm disappointed we haven't taken all three points there. We worked on hitting Hearts on the counter-attack and we didn't pick the right passes at times.

"For a club like us to come here and create that many opportunities, the gameplan worked very well, but unfortunately we didn't take all the points."

So Celtic have stretched their lead to 16 points at the top of the table and it surely is only a matter of time before a ninth consecutive title is secure.

It's tightened up for third, but it now looks like it is going to be a two-horse race for that Europa League qualification spot after defeats for Livingston and Hibs.

And what a big win that is for Hamilton against Kilmarnock. It means that, despite Hearts' improving form, the Edinburgh side find themselves further behind at the foot of the table, while St Mirren drop into second bottom.

Hamilton head coach Brian Rice is delighted with a week that has returned back-to-back wins for the first time in two years.

"It's been fantastic," he tells BBC Scotland. "Two clean sheets and six points. I couldn't ask any more of the lads.

"The conditions were atrocious. The wind again has wasted the match. I've been saying it for ages now, we need to do something when it's as windy as that because, for me, it's not a spectacle. But what a performance from the lads once again.

"It's a phenomenal performance and what a fantastic week for us. It's a pressure penalty at that stage of the game, but big Marios [Ogkmpoe] has been fantastic for the last three, four weeks."

Livingston manager Gary Holt is disappointed with his side's loss in Perth.

"There’s always complaints when you lose a game," he tells BBC Scotland. "We’re comfortable and controlling the game, for large spells St Johnstone never caused us any problems.

"The pitch didn’t help, I thought it was terrible. You have to play the conditions, but we got undone.

"They got the cross in too easily and there’s a striker standing in the middle of the box, four, five yards out and he gets a free shot. It can’t happen at any level."

Celtic manager Neil Lennon is delighted to see Leigh Griffiths, who had time out last season because of personal problems, start to recapture his form, scoring a hat-trick against St Mirren.

"It's fantastic and I'm delighted for Leigh Griffiths - and Odsonne Edouard is also in the goals," he tells BBC Scotland.

"Leigh's been working hard since the beginning of the year. I'm just pleased for him personally."

Tom Rogic had also returned to the starting line-up days after his Australia assistant coach suggested he might be better to leave Celtic in search of more regular game time.

"I'm delighted for Tom," Lennon said of the midfielder. "We've been rotating him and Ryan Christie and he shows great intelligence and great feet."

Hearts came from behind to rescue a point against Motherwell in a hard-fought contest at Tynecastle.

Christopher Long put the visitors ahead after stealing the ball from Craig Halkett and rounding Bobby Zlamal in the first half.

Hearts equalised just four minutes into the second half through a close-range Conor Washington strike.

Despite pressure from the home side in the closing minutes, the points were shared.

Hearts are still three adrift at the bottom of the Premiership, while Motherwell are just one point ahead of Aberdeen in third.

Marios Ogkmpoe's late penalty gives 10-man Hamiltonl a huge win over Kilmarnock in the battle for Premiership survival.

Despite two early injuries and a second yellow card for Mikel Miller, Hamilton made it four games without defeat.

That moves them four points clear of bottom-of-the-table Hearts and up into 10th above St Mirren.

Kilmarnock failed to take a number of chances and fall to eighth in the table - four adrift of the top six.

Aberdeen move to within a point of third-placed Motherwell after coming from behind to beat Hibernian.

Steven Whittaker's red card for the visitors when they were a goal proved to be the turning point, Hibs unable to keep the Dons at bay.
