They've done it! No! No, they haven't. The flag is up to rule David Platt's header from a free-kick out.

For a blissful, glorious moment, it looked like England might be on course for a World Cup final.

Oh, ow. Gascoigne takes an absolute clattering from Brehme. He went right through the England midfielder and sent him flying. You'd be off before the tackled man landed these days.

Credit to Gazza for shaking Brehme's hand after. Where he is at emotionally, he could easily have taken a different course of response.

If we don't have another goal in the next 15 minutes, a shootout is exactly what we will have, John. Might be quite fun, right? How would we know, having never experienced one before?

You wouldn't want it settled on penalties. You certainly wouldn't want to lose it on penalties...

Chris Waddle's shot came back off the post like a rocket, nobody could even get near it. I can't believe it, that would have given everyone a lift just before the break. A beautiful strike and the Germany keeper Bodo Ilgner could not get near it.

World Cup Rewind: England v West Germany 1990 - Waddle hits post in extra-time

    Oh, Chrissy Waddle! So close!

The England midfielder has been brilliant in this game and he almost caps his display with a possible winning goal.

Steven's rescues possession with a header to knock the ball towards Waddle and he fires a superb low shot from an angle that hits the inside of the far post flush and fires back out where it came.

Platt was inches away from putting the rebounding ball in.

Was that England's chance? The one to send them to the final?

Jonathan Heeley: This game was even more significant for me as it was on my 8th birthday & also the first World Cup I could watch properly as a fan. So much bringing back memories from the clumsy in-game graphics to the commentary and of course the genius of Gazza.

For those of us of a similar age to Jonathan, this really is a window to a whole load of emotions and nostalgia. When I look down now I half expect to find myself wearing a highly-flammable shell suit

West Germany continue to look a threat. England haven't really got going in extra-time. Thon fires a shot from range just wide of the post.

World Cup 1990: England v West Germany - Gascoigne booking rules him out of the final

Paul Gascoigne, reflecting back on the 1990 World Cup: "The ball ran loose and I thought I could get there. I suppose I'd have to say the occasion got to me, but this German guy is 6ft 5in and he dives and screams like a baby.

"For a couple of minutes I was going around in a daze. My whole world had been shattered. I had gone out of my way to steer clear of trouble and there I was - out of the World Cup final if we had won."

  12. 'Gazza had everything'published at 17:21 British Summer Time 12 April 2020

    West Germany 1-1 England

Andreas Brehme, speaking to the Independent in 2010: "England had an exceptional group with Gary Lineker, Chris Waddle, Paul Gascoigne. Paul was a great player, the same as when I played against him [for Internazionale against Lazio]. He had everything – he could win the ball, he struck the ball well, he could beat his opponent in a one-on-one. Technically he was strong and tactically too."

  13. 'Everybody had a word'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 12 April 2020

    West Germany 1-1 England

Terry Butcher, speaking to the Express in 2018: "I was watching from the bench, having been taken off to bring on a more attacking player in the 70th minute. When Gazza was booked, and Gary Lineker said across to the dugout, 'Have a word', everybody had a word.

"The whole bench was up shouting and encouraging Gascoigne.”

Gary Lineker appeals to the bench

Bobby Robson: "At the time of the booking, he was probably a bit rattled. Gary Lineker knows him well and he came over to the bench and shouted at us to watch Gazza for the next five minutes."

  15. 'No need to book him'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 12 April 2020

    West Germany 1-1 England

    Trevor Brooking
Former England midfielder at Stadio delle Alpi

Paul Gascoigne is almost in tears. There's no need to book him there, he's got tired legs. He's shattered.

It's been a gripping match and I just hope that doesn't affect his performance. All the Germany bench were up, encouraging the referee to book him. To miss the final after the tournament he has had would be a travesty.

The true realisation of what that card means has hit Gazza like a tonne of bricks. He's trying to fight them back but there are tears in his eyes.

Gary Lineker tries to offer condolences but realises it is a forlorn task. His appeal to the bench, presumably to Bobby Robson, to "have a word with him" is heartbreaking.

  17. YELLOW CARDpublished at 99 mins

    West Germany 1-1 England

Oh no. Oh no, no, no. Gascoigne has been booked. That is him out of the final, if England get there. He overruns the ball in midfield and through sheer desire to get it back lunges in and sends Berthold spinning away to the turf.

Gazza realises what has happened and what it may mean and offers apologies to anyone who will listen. But out comes the card.

  18. Postpublished at 96 mins

    West Germany 1-1 England

West Germany are looking the more likely in extra-time. Klinsmann in particular has come to life just as legs are beginning to feel the weight of 90+ minutes elsewhere.

The German striker nips into the space vacated by Wright, who had followed the ball, and with 12 yards between himself and the goal has a great chance to restore his side's advantage. However, he gets his volleyed effort wrong and sends the ball wide. A let off for England.

Matt Temple: Spent my life reminiscing about Gazza. Rightly so. But wow Waddle is on a different planet in this game. What. A . Player. Shame remembered for pen.

  20. GREAT SAVE!published at 95 mins

    West Germany 1-1 England

What a save this is from Peter Shilton! Jurgen Klinsmann, always alert to an opportunity, rises above Walker to meet a cross and head the ball down towards goal. The only reason it doesn't reach it is Shilton, who gets down to claw it away with two hands. Brilliant.
