I'm not going to dwell on the negatives, though.

Instead, I'll leave you with one of the finest moments any England player has produced on a pitch during a World Cup - a goal that for a brief moment made us all believe we had a team, led by a teenage magician, who could best the rest.

So, during this lockdown so far, we've relived the 1990 semi-final defeat to West Germany, Euro 1996 is getting reshown and we've just out you through that heartache all over again.

I imagine you all must feel like we're going out of our way to punish you?!

In fairness, though, England do have to take some of the blame. I mean, imagine how upbeat the rewinds in Spain and Germany must have been over the last few weeks?

When the England players came back into the dressing room, nobody breathed a word to me. There was almost complete silence. I could feel my stomach tightening even more. I gulped, breathed in, and gulped again.

I wanted to hold on to him longer, or at least to tell him how much that sturdy embrace and those heartfelt words of wisdom meant to me.

It was a wonderful group of players. We had youth, experience, a wonderful mix in there, and I honestly feel that if we had got through the Argentina game, we could have gone on to win that World Cup.

We had experienced defenders who gave us a good base, a young Michael Owen who was just breaking through and making a big impact, and players like Paul Ince and Alan Shearer around the squad to guide some of the younger players.

It was a great squad with real quality and the performance we put in against Argentina highlighted the quality we had there.

To be down to 10 men for as long as we were and lose in the manner we did was tough to take. It was an incredible performance on the night and we felt like we had won it when Sol Campbell had his goal disallowed, but it wasn’t to be.

There were so many highs and lows on the night and the emotion was there at the end. You feel pride in the performance and incredible disappointment at the result. It takes a while to get over something like that.

It is never a sending off. Simeone charged into the back of him. It took a while for us to work out why he had been sent off. As we can see, the flick out his what he is off for. It is a maximum yellow card.

The whole nation will understand how they feel. My big disappointment was that it was such a good first half - 11 v 11. All you would hope too see, it had everything. The sending off changed the whole nature of the game. It made it a glorious defensive operation but that is not we might have seen. We didn't get the second half we might have got.

We had practiced them, not that it did us much good. The players we wanted to take them were not all still on the pitch.

It's a now familiar story. Despite all their bravery and brilliance, England fail after being put on the spot. It happened in 1990, it happened in 1996 and now it has happened in 1998. And it'll happen again. Oh yes, it'll happen again.

Batty has missed! It's all over. England are out.

The midfielder's kick is not a good one and Roa goes the right way to block it and send Argentina through.

Sigh.

Oh, and England can't take advantage. Ince goes for the same spot as Crespo but his more firmly-struck effort is also palmed away by the keeper.

Ince has been magnificent in this game. That is not the final kick his display deserves.

Thankfully, I never missed in a shoot-out (he scored twice in Euro '96 and put away England's first penalty in 1998 too) but the pressure is much greater than taking one in a normal situation. I knew when I walked up against Argentina that there were 20m people watching at home and, believe me, my heart was beating a hell of a lot faster than normal.
