I'm not going to dwell on the negatives, though.

Instead, I'll leave you with one of the finest moments any England player has produced on a pitch during a World Cup - a goal that for a brief moment made us all believe we had a team, led by a teenage magician, who could best the rest.

    Stay safe, everyone...

So, during this lockdown so far, we've relived the 1990 semi-final defeat to West Germany, Euro 1996 is getting reshown and we've just out you through that heartache all over again.

I imagine you all must feel like we're going out of our way to punish you?!

In fairness, though, England do have to take some of the blame. I mean, imagine how upbeat the rewinds in Spain and Germany must have been over the last few weeks?

  3. Adams' crumb of comfortpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

England 2-2 Argentina aet (3-4 on pens)

    David Beckham
    Writing in his autobiography

When the England players came back into the dressing room, nobody breathed a word to me. There was almost complete silence. I could feel my stomach tightening even more. I gulped, breathed in, and gulped again.

I was in a packed changing room, but I had never felt so lonely in my life. I was isolated and afraid. Only Gary [Neville] and [Paul] Scholes came over to give me a word or two of comfort. I didn’t know where to look. I didn’t know what to say. I wanted to shout out how sorry I was, how much I wanted to take it back, but it was too late. I was trapped in my own sense of guilt and anxiety.

Then, as if from nowhere, a totally unexpected crumb of comfort: Tony Adams put his arm around me. It was a strong embrace. I could feel that he meant it; that he could see how much I was suffering; that he wanted to take away some of the pain. 'Look son, everyone makes mistakes,' he said. 'Don’t let it get you down. You are going to come back stronger and better.'

I wanted to hold on to him longer, or at least to tell him how much that sturdy embrace and those heartfelt words of wisdom meant to me.

  4. 'We could have gone on to win it'published at 15:34 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

England 2-2 Argentina aet (3-4 on pens)

    Glenn Hoddle
    Former England manager

It was a wonderful group of players. We had youth, experience, a wonderful mix in there, and I honestly feel that if we had got through the Argentina game, we could have gone on to win that World Cup.

We had experienced defenders who gave us a good base, a young Michael Owen who was just breaking through and making a big impact, and players like Paul Ince and Alan Shearer around the squad to guide some of the younger players.

It was a great squad with real quality and the performance we put in against Argentina highlighted the quality we had there.

To be down to 10 men for as long as we were and lose in the manner we did was tough to take. It was an incredible performance on the night and we felt like we had won it when Sol Campbell had his goal disallowed, but it wasn’t to be.

There were so many highs and lows on the night and the emotion was there at the end. You feel pride in the performance and incredible disappointment at the result. It takes a while to get over something like that.

  5. 'Yellow card at most'published at 15:33 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

England 2-2 Argentina aet (3-4 on pens)

    Mark Lawrenson
    Ex-Liverpool defender on BBC One

It is never a sending off. Simeone charged into the back of him. It took a while for us to work out why he had been sent off. As we can see, the flick out his what he is off for. It is a maximum yellow card.

  6. 'Not the second half we might have got'published at 15:30 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

England 2-2 Argentina aet (3-4 on pens)

    Jimmy Hill
    BBC Sport pundit

The whole nation will understand how they feel. My big disappointment was that it was such a good first half - 11 v 11. All you would hope too see, it had everything. The sending off changed the whole nature of the game. It made it a glorious defensive operation but that is not we might have seen. We didn't get the second half we might have got.

Watched this in the early hours on a 10 inch screen in a VW camper in Perth after driving down the west coast in 4 days. We skipped the beautiful west coast for the agony of penalties! What a game though, our wild celebrations over Owen's goal probably woke the entire campsite.

We had practiced them, not that it did us much good. The players we wanted to take them were not all still on the pitch.

  9. ENGLAND KNOCKED OUTpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

England 2-2 Argentina aet (3-4 on pens)

It's a now familiar story. Despite all their bravery and brilliance, England fail after being put on the spot. It happened in 1990, it happened in 1996 and now it has happened in 1998. And it'll happen again. Oh yes, it'll happen again.

  10. MISSED PENALTY - England 3-4 Argentinapublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    David Batty

Batty has missed! It's all over. England are out.

The midfielder's kick is not a good one and Roa goes the right way to block it and send Argentina through.

    Sigh.

GOAL - England 3-4 Argentinapublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    Roberto Ayala

Oh, it wasn't the best spot-kick we've seen but his low dribbling effort finds its way past Seaman, who dropped the right way but couldn't keep it out.

England now cannot miss. If they do, they are out...

  12. goal

GOAL - England 3-3 Argentinapublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    Michael Owen

England boy wonder brings us level again. It's a beautiful kick, high and in off the inside of Roa's right-hand post.

  13. goal

GOAL - England 2-3 Argentinapublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    Marcelo Gallardo

Seaman goes the right way but Gallardo's kick is too precise. Right into the corner. Argentina lead again.

  14. goal

GOAL - England 2-2 Argentinapublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    Paul Merson

After a bit of gamesmanship from Roa, who engages the ref by complaining about Merson's positioning of the ball (a move which earns him a yellow card), the England midfielder finds the net. Roa got his hand to it but not enough to keep it out.

  15. goal

GOAL - England 1-2 Argentinapublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    Juan Sebastian Veron

No mistake from Veron. He replicates Shearer's effort, firing his kick high into the roof and beyond the dive off Seaman.

  16. MISSED PENALTY - England 1-1 Argentinapublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    Paul Ince

Oh, and England can't take advantage. Ince goes for the same spot as Crespo but his more firmly-struck effort is also palmed away by the keeper.

Ince has been magnificent in this game. That is not the final kick his display deserves.

Saved! Seaman guesses right, diving to his left to push away Crespo's tame, poorly-placed effort.

  18. 'My heart was beating a lot faster'published at 15:18 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    Alan Shearer
    Former Newcastle and England striker

Thankfully, I never missed in a shoot-out (he scored twice in Euro '96 and put away England's first penalty in 1998 too) but the pressure is much greater than taking one in a normal situation. I knew when I walked up against Argentina that there were 20m people watching at home and, believe me, my heart was beating a hell of a lot faster than normal.

  19. goal

GOAL - England 1-1 Argentinapublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    Alan Shearer

No mistake from the skipper! He's already netted once from this very penalty spot in normal time and he does so again in the shoot-out. High and true, in to the roof of the net.

  20. goal

GOAL - England 0-1 Argentinapublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    Sergio Berti

The substitute makes no mistake, stroking his spot-kick into the bottom corner. Seaman guessed right, but it is too well-placed.
