    England v Argentina

Remember when we all thought Juan Sebastian Veron was one of the greatest footballers ever? When he was tearing it up in Serie A, before coming to England are showing us that we may have been a tad mistaken?

He looks like he means business as the camera pans past him during the anthems.

Two players who very much were as good as we all thought (and feared) - Javier Zanetti and Gabriel Batistuta. Batigol has a permanent sadness to his eyes, like his dog ran away and he never got over it.

And then, of course, there is Diego Simeone, who has never looked anything other than ready to kill.

England stick with the same starting XI that beat Colombia in their final group game. So Michael Owen starts up top with Alan Shearer and David Beckham is in midfield.

Argentina make three changes to the team that beat Croatia in their final group game. Jose Chamot comes into defence in place of Mauricio Pineda, while midfielder Diego Simeone and forward Claudio Lopez start, with Pablo Paz and Marcelo Gallardo dropping out.

The time is almost upon us. The England fans are in fine voice in the stadium and the players are on their way out of the tunnel.

David Beckham is one of them, so young, so fresh-faced, so untouched by any major incidents on the pitch that would cause a whole nation to fall out with him, thus setting him ultimately on a road to redemption and a place as a national treasure and international icon.

Paul Ince and Tony Adams both look pretty relaxed at the back. They've seen a bit more in their time. There is an awkward moment for Ince, who is a bit late getting on to the pitch, meaning he gets penned in with the photographers as a rope is pulled across the edge of the pitch. Sure the 'Guv'nor' took that well.

This game is particularly resonant for me as it came somewhere in the sweet spot of my football fandom. I'd just left school and was awaiting my time at university. So as you might imagine, the way it all ended up didn't do go down too well.

But what about you lot? Where were you, both in terms of your life and, specifically, for this game?

If you've got any pictorial evidence of yourself from 1998, especially shots of you on football away days, then now is the time to share them.

England's real journey to this stage stretches way back beyond their arrival in France and encounters in the tournament so far, though.

I simply don't have time to go over all of it in fine detail, but it begins with the crushing defeat to Germany in the semi-finals of Euro 96 at Wembley and the subsequent departure of manager Terry Venables - the man who had done as much as anyone to restore English pride on an international stage in the 90s.

Then there's the appointment of Glenn Hoddle, Paul Ince's blood-soaked shirt in Rome, the decision to axe Gazza, the rise of Fergie's Fledglings and Michael Owen, Eileen Drewery, the England fans rioting in Marseille and more. It's a long old list.

You wouldn't know that England have been on a rollercoaster from looking at Trevor Brooking, though. Honestly, is the man permanently set to suave?

Argentina's route to the last 16 was a lot less stressful. Three games, three wins (over Japan, Jamaica and Croatia), top of the group, thank you and goodnight.

Here we are then... 30 June 1998, Saint-Etienne, France and the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

You really don't need me to tell you how big this evening's game is. It's England v Argentina - a rivalry fuelled by 11 encounters to date, two of an extremely hostile nature at World Cups (before this one), a handball, a wonder goal. And you can also throw the Falklands War into the mix, although I'm sure you'll understand that I'm not going to get bogged down in that subject.

Putting all that history aside, though, and what is at stake tonight is a place in the last eight of the World Cup and a game with the Netherlands, who yesterday beat Yugoslavia in the first knockout round.

Welcome one and all to another of our England match rewinds.

With football currently shelved, we've spent the last few weekends mining our vaults to bring you some classic encounters from yesteryear and boy do we have a game that fits the remit today.

We're going back to 1998, to the World Cup in France and Saint-Etienne specifically for a last-16 clash between Glenn Hoddle's England and Daniel Passarella's Argentina.

So without further ado, let's jump into the Delorean, get it up to 88mph and go back 22 years (22! Seriously?!)...
