  1. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 92 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

    More controversy!

The ball is floated into the box towards the rising Alan Shearer, who goes up with Chamot. The Argentina man looks to have used an arm to win the ball.

    No, says the referee.

Shearer looked adamant. And with good reason. Chamot, admittedly with his eyes shut, punched the ball.

Adam Salter: Campbell and disallowed goals? Come back in 6 years time for Euro 2004 vs Portugal. That one was shocking. Surely Campbell is the only person to have had more disallowed goals than allowed for England at major tournaments

  3. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 91 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

We've barely had a minute of extra-time and Argentina are making a substitution. Diego Simeone is off (doesn't look injured) and on comes Sergio Berti.

Mick Jagger is right in the middle of the England fans, hands above his head, clapping and chanting. Imagine being next to the lead singer of the Rolling Stones during a chant? How self-conscious would you feel about your singing ability?

  6. Hit Les!published at 14:46 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    England 2-2 Argentina

Some of the England players are flat out - literally. Les Ferdinand is doing his best cheerleader act, walking from man to man, giving them a little pep talk. If Les told me to run through a brick wall I'd do it.

  7. 'Rely on penalties?'published at 14:45 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    England 2-2 Argentina

    Trevor Brooking
Former England midfielder at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard

You can only praise England for two totally different performances. The first half, they went after Argentina, conceded an early penalty, got back into it and got ahead before going at them at every opportunity. Shearer and Owen up front were pulling them to all parts of the pitch.

Then the sending off of David Beckham - we won't know what for until after the game. It changed the tactics. They had to sit back, defend and try to counter-attack and they have done that extremely well.

You wonder if they are capable of getting a goal themselves or if they are going to have to rely on penalties?

Trevor said the 'P' word everyone. Not me. It's Trevor's fault!

  8. Golden goalpublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    England 2-2 Argentina

Oh, and in case you weren't about for this first time around, the 1998 World Cup employed golden goal in extra-time. So any strike in the coming next 30 minutes sends the scoring side through and dumps the conceding team out. All over. Thank you and goodnight. Cruel, eh?

  9. FULL-TIMEpublished at 90+3 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

Ninety down, 30 more minutes to go.

Regardless of the ultimate outcome here, England have done themselves and their country proud. Cracking performance.

The England fans have been singing the theme tune to 'There Great Escape' pretty much solidly throughout this half.

It's not exactly tuneful but they've nailed the tone of the situation.

At the moment, England are sat in the cooler, hammering a baseball against the wall and looking to see out time. They're not quite as unruffled as Steve McQueen, though.

Three minutes will be added to the 90.

Hearts in mouths. The ball is floated in to the England for Crespo, who swivels and puts the ball wide. The flag was up, though, so it wouldn't have counted even if it had found the net.

Dom Breslin: Forgot just how good a battle this was. That Argentina side had so much depth - Batistuta, Crespo, Ortega, Zanetti, Veron. England actually played really well, even after the red card they had chances.

Pez: That Sol Campbell disallowed goal still breaks my heart.

  16. Postpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

That moment. Owen's goal, Beckham's sending off and then Campbell's disallowed goal. Three massive moments, all that have gone down in English football folklore, all in the same game.

That would have been so controversial, if he had allowed that goal from a quick free-kick. Three players were celebrating. Alan Shearer goes up and blocks the goalkeeper, which allows Sol Campbell to put it in. I have seen them allowed before. He did make contact. Roa is not the best but there was contact.

Argentina 2-2 England: Sol Campbell's winning header ruled out by referee

    Chaos! Absolute chaos!

For a few glorious moments, England think they've scored as Sol Campbell rises at the back post to head home. He charges off in celebration, as do some of his team-mates, who then have to get their heads back in the game and rally to prevent Argentina breaking and scoring from a quickly-taken free-kick.

Go on, be honest, how long was it before you realised this goal had been ruled out? I was on the floor of our local pub, covered in beer and my mates only to look up and see Argentina on the attack.

To be fair, the ref made the right call. Shearer was impeding Roa.

  19. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 78 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

England's second change freshens things up in midfield, with Paul Merson coming on for Paul Scholes, who has become more marginalised as the game has worn on.

    England 2-2 Argentina

Shouts of 'handball' from the Argentina players and fans as Chamot's cross hits Adams arm en route to being cleared. Would have been harsh, although I imagine, at some point in the distant future, some sort of technology will come in that will deem this to be an offence.

    Sigh.
