  1. 'Get Owen through the middle'published at 14:25 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    England 2-2 Argentina

    Trevor Brooking
Former England midfielder at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard

That is why owned needs to one through the middle because he is just so devastating in this situations. You can see the defenders panicking. They don't want to touch him. You just saw the ball bobble before he hit it. Unlucky. But a great run again.

  2. Postpublished at 75 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

England are still firmly in this. Michael Owen once again sets of on a Argentine defence-terrorising run, that sees him charge past his marker but then fire a shot high over the bar.

A timely reminder that while they have a man more, Argentina don't have shackles big enough to hold England's teen forward.

  3. YELLOW CARDpublished at 74 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

Frustration starting to show for Argentina. Almeyda goes into the book. And he's not happy.

Paul Ince has had a stronger of a game. His positioning has been top-notch. He's intercepted passes, won tackles, basically set himself as a one-man block to everything Argentina can throw at him.

  5. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 71 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

England's turn to make a change and it is Gareth Southgate, back into major tournament action, replacing Graeme Le Saux.

England have rarely been out of their own half since the red card. Southgate won't change that much.

  6. Gallardo the greatpublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    England 2-2 Argentina

Trevor Brooking seems particularly smitten with Gallardo. Unlike Crespo, you may not be as aware of him. He did spend time in France with Monaco and Paris St-Germain, but is tied most closely to River Plate.

After three spells with the club (and 13 goals in 44 internationals), he is now River's manager, and a pretty fine one too. Plenty of trophies on that CV.

As regards his playing style in relation to this game, he's another of those silky, ball-carrying number 10s that Argentina pump out en masse!

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 68 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

Argentina want to press home their numerical advantage with some fresh legs up top. On come forwards Marcelo Gallardo and some youngster called Hernan Crespo. Can't imagine he'll amount to much.

    Batistuta and Lopez depart.

This was an amazing World Cup, had everything, definitely my favourite one I've seen.

    Dermot in Lisburn

  9. Postpublished at 63 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

More scrambling from England as Argentina break forward through Chamot. He fatally dwells on the ball on the edge of the box, allowing the white-shirted bodies to regroup and crowd him out.

"heroic defending," says Trevor Brooking. Once again, he's nailed it.

  10. Postpublished at 60 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

Wall, say hello to England's backs. Lopez gets in round the back down the right byline and looks to pick out a team-mate in the middle but thankfully Alan Shearer - putting in a shift - is there to hack the ball away.

It'll be pretty much at least 30 more minutes of this.

  11. Postpublished at 58 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

It is largely one-way traffic, as you'd imagine. Ortega picks a pocket of space and gathers the ball before feeding Lopez, whose low shot trickles past the far post via a deflection.

I think we're gonna see a lot of the last-ditch diving tackles that England players were throwing themselves into there.

Aaron: Still to this day never a red card, yes Beckham was stupid for what he did, but it was noted in the commentators how the ref allowed other challenges to go without punishment. Yellow for both players.

Lewis Ackerman: Just seen the first half of Eng-Arg '98. I'm wondering if Beckham & Scholes ever had as poor a performance in any other half of football in their careers!?! Was actually a plus Becks getting the red in the 2nd half going on his 1st half performance.

With no Beckham on the pitch, Alan Shearer has taken over free-kick duties. He has a chance from a set-piece 25 yards out and strings Roa's palms with his shot. Decent save, though.

  14. Postpublished at 51 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

The first sign of how stretched Beckham's sending off is going to leave England. Veron has acres of space to run into down the right and England are fortunate he is unable to create anything.

Soon after, Batistuta heads just wide. Already, the screw is being turned.

  15. Postpublished at 49 mins

    England 2-2 Argentina

Back on the field in Saint-Etienne, England's solution is to shift Darren Anderton more central and trust in Gary Neville to patrol the right wing.

What a job these 10 men have on their hands now.

  16. 'It made me mature'published at 13:59 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    England 2-2 Argentina

    David Beckham
Speaking to GQ Magazine in 2016

One of my top five career moments would be getting a red card versus Argentina in 1998. It was difficult for me as a player and as a person, but it made me mature very quickly.

  17. 'I remember feeling sorry for David'published at 13:58 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    England 2-2 Argentina

    Martin Keown
England defender, on the bench that night

Even before the red card was shown I remember feeling sorry for David because I knew what he had done would be the defining moment of the game. Defeat then was always going to be seen as his fault.

  18. 'How many times?'published at 13:58 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    England 2-2 Argentina

    Glenn Hoddle
Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine in 2014

When I saw it, I just thought: "What are you doing?" How many times had we warned him about such behaviour? I was expecting a yellow card. But it was red for violent conduct. However mad I was with David, I was furious with the referee.

  19. 'The rules are very clear'published at 13:58 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    England 2-2 Argentina

    Kim Milton Nielsen
    1998 World Cup referee

The sending off of David Beckham was straightforward. The rules are very clear about kicking or attempting to kick an opponent.

Many people today forget that it is a red card offence. Some have said it was only a soft kick, but that does not matter.

In that situation one person has to be punished. If I had not sent him off, I would have been punished for not following the rules.

I was surprised by the reaction after the game. But the most important thing for me is I believe what I did was right.

  20. 'You take advantage'published at 13:58 British Summer Time 17 May 2020

    England 2-2 Argentina

    Diego Simeone
Speaking to the Observer in 2002

I had tackled him, and we both fell to the ground. As I was trying to stand up that was when he kicked me from behind. And I took advantage of that. And I think any person would have taken advantage of that in just the same way.

Sometimes you get sent off, sometimes you don’t. Unfortunately for the English team that time they lost a player. Anyway, you take advantage of all the opportunities you find in your life. If you don't take advantage of a chance that comes your way you are lost.
