  2. What they need: Hull City (24th - 45 points)published at 19:23 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Cardiff City v Hull City (19:30 BST)

Well, in short, what Hull City need this evening to avoid relegation is a near miracle.

Even without a pending 12-point deduction for Wigan, The Tigers would be staring down the barrel of League One football next season anyway.

After five successive defeats and just four points from a possible 24 since restart, they are almost gone.

    Hull will be relegated unless:

    • They win and Luton lose and Wigan and Barnsley both fail to win.
  3. What they need: Barnsley (23rd - 46 points)published at 19:21 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

    Brentford v Barnsley (19:30 BST)

One thing we've definitely learnt during the Championship restart is that Barnsley will not accept relegation until it's mathematically certain.

A win at home to Nottingham Forest on Sunday kept them in the hunt and maybe Gerhard Struber and his players have one last trick to pull tonight and spoil a potential promotion party at Griffin Park.

    BarnsleyImage source, Rex Features

    Barnsley will be relegated unless:

    • They win and Wigan and Luton both fail to win.
    • They win and Charlton lose and one of Luton or Wigan fails to win.
    • Improbably, they win by 10 or more goals and Charlton draw and one of Luton or Wigan fails to win.
  4. What they need: Luton (22nd - 48 points)published at 19:19 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Luton Town v Blackburn Rovers (19:30 BST)

Luton are one of those sides who must've been saying to themselves only last week, "let's just try and take it to the last game".

Well, the returning Nathan Jones has certainly masterminded that scenario since he began his second spell in charge at Kenilworth Road during lockdown.

The Hatters have pulled off some terrific results since restart, losing just once and in emphatic fashion against Reading as they've climbed away from certain relegation to right in the mix for survival.

Have they got one last big win in them when Blackburn come calling this evening?

    Kazenga LuaLuaImage source, Rex Features

    Luton will be relegated if:

    • They draw and Charlton avoid defeat and either Wigan or Barnsley win.
    • They lose and any one of Wigan, Barnsley or Hull win. (This rules out the implausible scenario of Charlton losing by 18 more goals than Luton do).

  6. What they need: Charlton (21st - 48 points)published at 19:15 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Leeds United v Charlton Athletic (19:30 BST)

It's a trip to Lee Bowyer's old stomping ground of Elland Road this evening as his Charlton side go looking for a win that should secure their Championship status.

Oh wait - they've got to go and play the league champions at their place just before their trophy presentation you say?

Yep, not exactly an ideal last day fixture for the Addicks but perhaps Bowyer's men will catch Bielsa's nursing a few hangovers from the seemingly non-stop revelry since Friday night.

    Jason PearceImage source, Rex Features

    Charlton will be safe with:

    • A win

    Charlton will be relegated if:

    • They draw and Luton and Wigan both win.
    • They draw and one of Luton and Wigan win and Barnsley improbably win by 10 or more goals.
    • They lose and Luton avoid defeat and either Wigan or Barnsley win.
  7. What they need: Birmingham City (20th - 50 points)published at 19:12 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Birmingham City v Derby County (19:30 BST)

For Birmingham, the equation is pretty much identical to Middlesbrough's and also assumes Wigan won't receive a points deduction and/or win this evening.

But either way, it's been a nervy few weeks at St Andrew's with just three points gained from a possible 24 since restart for Blues and the departure of head coach Pep Clotet earlier than previously expected in the process.

    Kristian PedersenImage source, Rex Features

    Birmingham will be safe with:

    • A win
    • A draw even if Charlton and Luton both win due to only one of them having a superior goal difference.

    Birmingham will be relegated if:

    • They lose and Charlton and Luton both win and Middlesbrough do not lose by five more goals than Birmingham do.
    • They draw and Charlton win and Luton win by 10 or more goals.
  8. What they need: Middlesbrough (19th - 50 points)published at 19:11 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Sheffield Wednesday v Middlesbrough (19:30 BST)

So again, this one assumes that Wigan will not have their points deduction enforced and/or win this evening.....

In that case, Middlesbrough will only be vulnerable to relegation this evening if they lose at Sheffield Wednesday.

Four defeats and two wins in their past six games have seen Boro fail to get some consistency going to make themselves completely safe before the last game.

But "firefighter" Neil Warnock has certainly put them in a much healthier position than where he found them just outside the relegation zone on goal difference with eight games to play.

    Middlesbrough will be safe with:

    • A win

    Middlesbrough will be relegated if:

    • They lose and Charlton and Luton both win and Birmingham avoid defeat (or Birmingham lose, but Boro lose by five more goals than Birmingham do)
    • If they draw and Birmingham and Charlton both win and Luton win by an implausible 15 or more goals.

Again, these scenarios assume Wigan will not have 12 points deducted at the end of the season or win their appeal.

  9. What they need: Huddersfield (18th - 51 points)published at 19:08 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Millwall v Huddersfield Town (19:30 BST)

Huddersfield will only be in the relegation equation should Wigan's points deduction not apply and they head into this evening's relegation fight as arguably the least at risk of falling through the trap door.

But that hasn't stopped it from being an eventful six days at the west Yorkshire club.

On Friday evening, they guaranteed neighbours Leeds' promotion by beating West Brom, but by Sunday manager Danny Cowley and his brother Nicky had parted company with the club despite all but guaranteeing their Championship survival.

    Danny CowleyImage source, Rex Features

Coming into tonight's trip to Millwall, Huddersfield just need:

    • A draw

We won't go into the very, very, complicated scenario that could see them relegated if they were to lose at this stage. But if the most unlikely of most unlikely scenarios begins to unfold, we'll let you know about it!

  11. Preferred bidder chosen for Laticspublished at 19:05 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

As well as a crunch day on the field for Wigan Athletic, it's also been a hive of activity off it as administrators confirm they have chosen a preferred bidder for the club.

You can read more on that below.

    Wigan bidder chosen, says administrator

  12. What they need: Wigan (13th - 58 points*)published at 19:04 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Wigan Athletic v Fulham (19:30 BST)

Now you may be wondering why we're starting our look at the relegation fight by talking about a side who start the evening in the relative comfort of mid-table and on 58 points and why there's an asterisk against Wigan's points total.

*Pending 12-point deduction for entering administration which club will appeal against to the EFL.

As it stands, Wigan will finish their game against Fulham this evening and then have their final points tally deducted by 12.

So for the purposes of every scenario we discuss after this involving the other seven clubs at risk of relegation, we're going to apply that deduction and factor it into the permutations.

    Wigan will be relegated unless:

    • They win and either Charlton or Luton fail to win.
  13. Postpublished at 19:03 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

On to the relegation equation now.

Pay attention - they'll be some questions at the end if you're still up to speed on the permutations!

  14. Team news headlines - Baggies change fourpublished at 19:00 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Here are some of the key takeaways from the team news:

    • Needing a win to guarantee promotion, West Brom make four changes: Kyle Bartley, Darnell Furlong, Filip Krovinovic and Callum Robinson come in for Ahmed Hegazi, Conor Townsend, Matt Phillips and Hal Robson-Kanu. Charlie Austin is on the bench.
    • Brentford's one change sees one Dane replace another in midfield as Emiliano Marcondes swaps in for Mathias Jensen
    • Wigan are unchanged, as they host fourth-placed Fulham
    • Playmaker Aiden McGeady returns to start, as relegation-threatened Charlton's only switch
    • The Addicks face a Leeds side - celebrating the title - who have made seven changes, but they had made several changes for their previous game too, so it's not quite as weak a side as it might sound. Hernandez, White, Harrison, Cooper, Klich and Bamford are all starting.
    • Teenager Jude Bellingham starts for Birmingham in his final game before moving to Borussia Dortmund for a record fee for a 17-year-old. The Blues have also dropped Scott Hogan to the bench.
    • Hull change two, as James Scott and keeper George Long both start.

You can find you team's full line-up here.

That's the play-off picture explained hopefully.

Let's bring you some team news headlines with 30 minutes to go until kick-off...

  16. What they need: Swansea City (7th - 67 points)published at 18:58 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Reading v Swansea City (19:30 BST)

Swansea are the outside chance of making the play-offs after losing ground in recent weeks on south Wales neighbours Cardiff.

But the Swans still have a chance of getting there and boss Steve Cooper told BBC Sport Wales they must focus on themselves at Reading this evening even though they have to rely on other results.

Swansea will make the play-offs if:

    • They win and Cardiff lose.
    • They win and Forest lose with a five-goal swing in Swansea’s favour.
  17. Cardiff boss Harris looking to maintain momentumpublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Cardiff City v Hull City (19:30 BST)

Since Neil Harris took over as Cardiff City manager in November, he has lifted the Bluebirds from lowly 14th to the brink of a play-off place.

BBC Sport Wales spoke to the former Millwall player and manager about how he feels the momentum is with his side heading into this evening's last match at home to Hull.

Harris eager to continue Cardiff 'ride'

Boss Neil Harris hopes Cardiff City's run to the Championship play-offs has proved doubters wrong, as they seek a result against Hull City to seal a top-six spot.

  18. What they need: Cardiff City (6th - 70 points)published at 18:55 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Cardiff City v Hull City (19:30 BST)

Cardiff City go into tonight's last match against relegation-threatened Hull City knowing they need just a point to book their place in the play-offs.

But boss Neil Harris has expressly told his coaches and staff that he will not want to know a thing about what's happening elsewhere until he asks them himself.

Cardiff will reach the play-offs if:

    • They win.
    • They draw.
    • They lose and Swansea fail to win.
    • They lose, Swansea win and Forest lose by more than four goals.
  19. What they need: Nottingham Forest (5th - 70 points)published at 18:52 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Nottingham Forest v Stoke City (19:30 BST)

Nottingham Forest come into the last game of the regular season in the worst form of all the sides in the top six.

Sabri Lamouchi's side are without a win in their past five games and still need a positive result to book their play-off place.

    Forest WallyImage source, Getty Images

    Forest will make the play-offs:

    • With a win.
    • With a draw.
    • With a defeat if Swansea fail to win or if Swansea win and fail to make up a five-goal swing in goal difference between the two sides.
    • With a defeat if Swansea win and Cardiff lose.
