How fitting that this man should grace the front of the Leeds programme on the night that they receive the Championship trophy.

The club's record appearance holder, who won every domestic trophy going, along with two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups (not to mention the small matter of a World Cup along the way) - Jack Charlton, you will be sorely missed.

  3. What they need: Fulham (4th - 80 points)published at 18:45 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Wigan Athletic v Fulham (19:30 BST)

Fulham start the night in fourth place, two points behind second-placed West Brom and after a run of five wins from their past six games.

Scott Parker's side looked out of contention to secure automatic promotion a couple of weeks ago, but still have a chance going into the final game.

    Fulham will be promoted if:

    • They win and West Brom lose and Brentford fail to win.
    • They win and West Brom draw and Brentford fail to win - but Fulham would need to win by 16 goals to overtake West Brom.
  4. What they need: Brentford (3rd - 81 points)published at 18:42 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

    Brentford v Barnsley (19:30 BST)

Brentford missed their golden opportunity to put their automatic promotion fate in their own hands this evening when they lost at Stoke City on Saturday lunchtime.

That defeat ended a run of eight successive wins for The Bees and means they will be relying on events elsewhere tonight while having to do their own bit in what could be their final match at Griffin Park against relegation-threatened Barnsley.

Brentford will win automatic promotion this evening if one of these two scenarios occur:

    • They win and West Brom fail to win.
    • They draw and West Brom lose and Fulham fail to win.
  5. What they need: West Brom (2nd - 82 points)published at 18:40 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

West Brom v QPR (19:30 BST)

Second-placed West Brom face 14th-placed QPR at The Hawthorns and sit a point ahead of their nearest challengers Brentford in the race to claim the second automatic promotion place.

To go up automatically tonight - Slaven Bilic's side need one of these three things to happen:

    • A win.
    • A draw and Brentford failing and Fulham failing to win by 16 goals.
    • A defeat with a Brentford loss and Fulham failing to win.

Amidst pleas from authorities to observe social distancing, Leeds fans are already starting to gather at Elland Road to celebrate the club's return to the top flight after 16 long years.

Their side have dazzled and delighted through this Championship campaign - the Premier League might just need to watch out next season...

  13. How tonight's final league table may not be the end of the storypublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

And just throw another curveball into the mix of this evening's promotion and relegation permutations, we may find that the final league standings will need to go through a few more hurdles before being rubber-stamped.

We've mentioned Wigan Athletic already, but Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County also face having their final positions determined by legal events off the pitch.

BBC Sport's Simon Stone has been assessing each club's case and what we know so far.

    Could lawyers decide Championship relegation?

The Championship season reaches its conclusion on Wednesday, and as teams battle for promotion, it looks like lawyers will have an impact on relegation.

  14. How it stands - A relegation zone twist?published at 18:14 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Now, I hinted that there's another left-field scenario to pay attention to this evening and this is it.

As you will see from the league table as it appears on both the BBC Sport website and app, Wigan Athletic sit 13th on 58 points with a game to play.

But this does not take into account that the Latics have a 12-point penalty pending for entering administration earlier this month.

Here's how the table would look if that penalty was applied now.

    wigan deductionImage source, .

Wigan have stated they intend to appeal against the points deduction to the English Football League.

The EFL have also said they will enforce the sanction once the season is over due to their current position outside of the relegation zone.

Had Wigan finished in the bottom three, the deduction would have been carried over into next season.

    You with us so far?

    And down at the bottom....

Now this is where it gets interesting and not just because of how the table looks right now (more on that to come shortly).

But one thing that is for certain before a ball is kicked tonight - nobody has been relegated yet!

In all - there are EIGHT clubs, yes EIGHT, who are all at risk of relegation this evening.

Pay attention as we go through them all as there will be some Joker entries in the pack.

  16. How it stands - the play-off racepublished at 18:10 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

A bit further down the table - once again we have a three-horse race to finalise the play-off places.

West Brom, Brentford and Fulham are all guaranteed a place, but as already mentioned, they want their hands on a higher prize.

Tonight, the three teams looking to book their post-season shot at promotion are Nottingham Forest, Cardiff City and Swansea City.

  17. How it stands - the race for promotionpublished at 18:08 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Let's start things off by looking at the state of the table at the top.

Leeds United we know are already promoted as champions having achieved both last weekend in the space of less than 24 hours without even kicking a ball.

They complete their Championship campaign, with the trophy lift, at home against Charlton.

But there's still one more automatic promotion place up for grabs - and it's between three teams...

West Brom start the evening in second, a point clear of third-placed Brentford and two ahead of fourth-placed Fulham.
