I think Romero is too good to be a no. 2, it beggars belief that he hasn't wanted to leave United in search of regular football all these years. De Gea is the undisputed first choice, and you choose your first choice players in your biggest games. Did anyone see Maguire dropped after he was nutmegged recently? Goalkeeping errors are magnified more than others...when Pogba lost the ball in front of the defence and United conceded against Southampton, was he dropped the next time out?

Could anybody really bet against Sevilla tonight? This is their competition and amazingly, they keep winning it

  3. Sevilla have fine Europa pedigreepublished at 19:45 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

There was a time when Sevilla walked into the Europa League and came away with the trophy - 2014, 2015 and 2016.

And when they haven't been competing in the second tier competition they've been competing in the Champions League. In fact, they have only failed to qualify for European competition once in 15 seasons!!

Coach Julen Lopetegui, whose side edged out Wolves to get here, is aware his side face a stiff test in Cologne.

    Here's Julen:

"This is the best United we have seen in the last few years.

"They've found their way and for that they're unbeaten since January in a league that's as competitive as the Premier League.

"We are up against a complete outfit who will make us play at our best. We like playing in these kind of important matches, of course. It's what we have worked and fought for all season."

I've never seen so much passion shown over the choice of a goalkeeper. Anyway, we're 17 minutes away from kick-off at the Stadion Koln.

To Fin in Devon (19:04), how do you know what game time Romero has been promised? For me, staying at the club this long under De Gea proves he either doesn't have the ambition to be No.1 anywhere, or is happy earning big £££ for playing occasional cup games. De Gea made big mistakes this season, sure, but he's still top. He needs confidence, and Ole's giving him it by playing him. The chat flying around about De Gea playing tonight is absolutely mad, people need to get a grip. Top class keeper for a huge game. If injury-prone Romero doesn't like it, he knows where the door is. But he won't go - because he knows which side his bread's buttered. Best No.2 in the world. But that's what he is - a No.2.

    Harry, London

You got to have faith in De Gea!! He's saved Manchester United many a time.. The man is having a blip. He'll be back to his best. Hopefully..

    Luke. Shoreham-by-Sea.

Henderson is now no2 to De Gea, so Romero is not in Utd's plans anymore.

Shane O'Neill: I prefer Romero, but the defence is the best we have available. The key is for Pogba to have a strong game and for Rashford to finally step up. We need to hope that Bruno still has some energy left in the tank

Andy Muzhy: Gutted for Romero! He has been excellent in the Europa League and deserves to start. I would pack my bags after tonight.

Max Chaytor: Sergio Romero linked with Leeds United? I’d go. Get regular game time under arguably one of Argentina’s greatest managers, still in the top flight. And it’s a massive middle finger to Man Utd and Solskjaer who haven’t shown him the respect he deserves

Mark from Abertillery: De Gea a big risk after being brilliant for years and a not too great defence. Hope we don’t get undone.

  7. Marathon man Maguirepublished at 19:40 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

Harry Maguire tonight starts his 55th game in all competitions this season, the most by a United player in a season since Daley Blind and Chris Smalling started 55 in 2015-16 - while within Europe’s top five leagues in 2019-20, only Conor Coady (57 for Wolves) has started more.

  8. 'Solskjaer must learn from defeats'published at 19:38 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

Man Utd v Sevilla (20:00 BST)

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is at Manchester United, so you judge him on trophies.

But let's not forget where United were when he was appointed manager. They have stuck with him through the toughest months of the season, when they didn't have an identity, and he's made one very, very good signing in Bruno Fernandes and it changed the dynamic of the team and brought out the best in the other players.

Will it be a failure if he doesn't get them to the final? I don't think it will be.

Jurgen Klopp was in that position where he couldn't win a final - look at what he's done now, and the experiences players and managers have to learn from. Solskjaer is a young manager and he has to learn from defeats and learn how to put it right.

He can put the [FA Cup] semi-final against Chelsea, which he got tactically wrong, behind him tonight and get them to the final.

  9. 'It was a difficult decision to drop Romero' - Solskjaerpublished at 19:38 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on BT Sport explaining the decision to filed De Gea instead of Romero: "It was difficult when Sergio played well and never let us down or himself down. David looked really good in training. He also made a few saves against Sevilla in the last tie (in 2018). Sergio is disappointed but he's a tough professional."

On the tie: "If you go to the final you have to win. We have to win tonight. It's probably the toughest opponent since lockdown. I hope we prove to them we're they're toughest opponent since.

"They have good players, good recruitment and a style of play - aggressive, pressing."

Absolutely shocked and disgusted with the choice of keeper tonight, I'm a huge fan of Romero and feel so sorry for him, the way he has been treated by Ole is utterly disgraceful! At any other club in the Prem (apart the top 2) I feel he would be first choice, De Gea does not want to be at united and his performances reflect that! For me Romero should be given a chance to not only play in the cups but also be united No1.

    Anthony, Essex

So Ole has picked a keeper to start tonight who will be at Old Trafford next season over a keeper who won't be due to the emergence of Henderson. It's not really a shock now, is it?

    Wayne, Manchester

Arguably you could look at Solkjaer's choice of De Gea as a test for him to ensure he delivers. If not, I believe there is a keeper on loan currently who would easily fit into those boots.

Aditya Thakkar: De Gea starts! Nothing against him but its an absolute disgrace of a move by Ole towards Romero. Romero has always risen to the occasion & performed whenever called upon & has been nothing but dignified everytime he hasn't been picked, surprisingly for the cup matches

Richard: There's no justice. Romero deserves to play and he's the better goalkeeper at the moment. I don't often disagree with Ole but I do today.

Joe Wedgwood: No Matic and De Gea in for Romero? Another blunder today and Ole has to pull the plug on De Gea. And Fred over Matic? Madnes

  12. Pre match statspublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    • Manchester United have progressed to the final from each of their past four European semi-final appearances (2008, 2009 and 2011 Champions League and 2017 Europa League), winning the trophy on two of those four occasions.
    • United and Sevilla's only two meetings were in the last 16 of the 2017-18 Champions League, with Sevilla winning 2-1 at Old Trafford in the second leg, after a goalless draw in the first leg.
    • Sevilla have reached the Europa League semi-final on three previous occasions and gone on to win the tournament each time (2014, 2015, 2016). They have only been eliminated in one of their past 20 knockout ties in the competition, losing 6-5 on aggregate to Slavia Prague in the last 16 in 2018-19.
    • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has won 49 of his 89 matches in charge of Manchester United. Victory in this game would see him become the third fastest manager to reach 50 wins in the club's history, after Ernest Mangnall (78) and Jose Mourinho (81).
    • Bruno Fernandes has been directly involved in more Europa League goals this season than any other player (11 for Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon combined). He has either scored (seven) or assisted (four) in seven of his nine appearances in the competition this campaign.

  14. Sancho and Bellingham on targetpublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

For any Man Utd fan still holding out hope for Jadon Sancho coming to the club this summer - he was on the scoresheet for Borussia Dortmund today.

English teenager Jude Bellingham - their £30m signing from Birmingham - was also on target with his first goal for the club as Dortmund thrashed Austria Wien 11-2 in a friendly.

  15. 'We want to be winning trophies' - Maguirepublished at 19:23 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire echoed the sentiments of his manager by stating that the club need to take that extra step.

"Getting to semi-finals isn't good enough for this club.

"It's been a promising year in the Premier League, we've finished third. Again, it's not something that this club wants to do, finish third, but at the start of the season from where we was last year, I'm sure a lot of people would have taken that.

"But for the future, that's not where we want to be. We want to be winning trophies, the Premier League and other cups."

I think after how well Romero has played to keep Utd in the competition, he should feel rightly very miffed to be dropped for someone whose form this season has been so erratic. This could really come back to bite Ole against a team who create as many chances as Sevilla do.

    From Paul Atkinson

Can't believe De Gea before Romero, both very good keepers but Romero has done nothing wrong when given a chance. De Gea is a great shot stopper, but doesn't command his area and now prone to mistakes. Romero is prepared to leave his line to help his defenders. Just think this adds more pressure on De Gea. Perhaps Romero has indicated he wants to go now that Henderson enters the equation. Hope Ollie's got this right!

  19. 'I'm not Cantona... yet' - Fernandespublished at 19:16 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    Media caption,

Bruno Fernandes says he needs to be 'much better' before being compared with Eric Cantona

He scored the winner in the 1-0 battering of Copenhagen, and has made a massive impact for United since arriving in January. His name is, of course, Bruno Fernandes.

When asked about being compared to Eric Cantona, who also made a big impact when he joined the club from Leeds in the 1990s, Fernandes said:

"It is really good for people to be talking about those names but Cantona was amazing for this club.

"I need to do much, much better to be compared with him."

On David de Gea starting in place of Sergio Romero...

    I'm really surprised by it.

I look at Romero and he's done an outstanding job when he's been called upon. His clean-sheet record is excellent.

It's a huge call by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and one that didn't come off for him in the FA Cup semi-final [against Chelsea].
