  2. McInnes praises 'predator' Andersonpublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    Aberdeen v Rangers (12:30)

Aberdeen's injuries up front have been well-documented this week - no Sam Cosgrove or Curtis Main, so young Bruce Anderson, who scored in this fixture two years ago, leads the line.

"We’ve got injuries, clearly, one or two key players, but we’ve got a strong squad this season and it’s a game that we can win," Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes told BBC Radio Scotland.

"Bruce Anderson wasn’t far away anyway from starting. Young players develop at different ages and his all-round game has been a lot better. He doesn't need too much coaching on how to score goals. He is a predator in the box, right or left foot, and he scores with his head. His overall game has improved in pre-season and he’s been very good."

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is hopeful that the lack of fans will help his players at Pittodrie, pointing out on Sky Sports the often frenzied atmosphere there in matches between the close rivals.

"There is an intense rivalry, but our performances have been strong there and hopefully it will be a little calmer," he says.

Asked about Rangers' desire to stop Celtic winning a 10th consecutive league title, he says: "There is no getting away from it being an important season for both clubs and it's an exciting season we are looking forward to."

Gerrard says his goal for the season is winning a first trophy as Rangers manager and adds: "We've been close but not got over the line and it is important to get that first one to build confidence."

  9. Anderson to lead Aberdeen linepublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    Aberdeen v Rangers (12:30)

With talisman Sam Cosgrove out for up to 10 weeks and Curtis Main also injured, it has fallen to 21-year-old Bruce Anderson to lead the line for Aberdeen.

He's made just three senior starts but has scored for fun for the under-23s and had a fruitful loan spell at Dunfermline Athletic during the second half of last season.

A lot of Aberdeen fans have been clamouring for him to play more regularly, so will he make his mark? He managed to score a last-minute leveller against Rangers at Pittodrie on the opening day of the 2018-19 season.

Ryan Edmondson, signed yesterday on loan from Leeds United, is on the bench as back-up.

  10. Balogun handed Rangers debutpublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

Other than the retention of Alfredo Morelos amid transfer speculation, the talking point in Rangers' line-up is the start for summer signing Leon Balogun.

The centre-half signed from Wigan Athletic gets the nod ahead of fit-again Finland international Filip Helander.

Veteran Allan McGregor retains his place in goal ahead of summer signing Jon McLaughlin, the Scotland cap last with Sunderland.

Calvin Bassey, the defender signed from Leicester City, is also among the nine substitutes.

Ianis Hagi starts in midfield after his loan from Genk became a permanent move over the summer.

  11. Aberdeen to kick on?published at 11:45 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    Aberdeen v Rangers (12:30)

After a consistent period of being the second best team in Scottish football, Aberdeen have had an underwhelming last two seasons.

They were beaten to third spot by Kilmarnock and then Motherwell (albeit the latter by one point in a curtailed season) and have struggled to convince despite churning out reasonably consistent results that have been beyond other clubs of a similar size.

With largely the same squad - Jonny Hayes being the only addition - the question is therefore whether manager Derek McInnes can squeeze more from this group and get them playing with more pace and precision going forward. That could be even more difficult at the start of the season with top-scorer Sam Cosgrove out for 8-10 weeks with an injury.

The club told fans during lockdown that its newly adopted 'philosophy' (sorry proper football men) was to do just that. But will it come to fruition in 2020-21?

  13. Clubs allowed five subspublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

Remember, clubs voted to increase the number of permitted substitutions from three to five this season. However, it's not quite as simple as that.

Teams will only be allowed to stop play to make a substitution three times per game. In other words, managers will have to make at least two double changes if they want to use their full five subs.

Teams are also allowed to have up to nine players on the bench now, though they don't have to.

  14. The Morelos dilemmapublished at 11:36 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    Aberdeen v Rangers (12:30)

What to do about the Alfredo Morelos situation really is a conundrum for Rangers. The striker has been the club's top scorer for the last two seasons and has particularly excelled in Europe.

However, he has a patchy disciplinary record and let the squad down when he returned late from a trip home to Colombia before a Scottish Cup tie with Hearts, which Rangers ultimately lost as Morelos was dropped.

Plus, a healthy fee could allow Rangers to strengthen their squad depth and sign a replacement. But it's very hard to replace guaranteed goals.

He starts today and will no doubt be fully committed to the cause.

What would you do Rangers fans? Thumbs up for keep, thumbs down for sell...
