Adam Salter: I personally think the delayed flag is a brilliant addition. Flagging after the goal ensures that it will definitely be the correct decision. Early flagging risks preventing a goal that should be. It also means VAR will be used to allow goals, rather than disallow

  3. 'VAR better now'published at 17:13 British Summer Time 12 September 2020

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl: "You could see it was not so easy to switch immediately on. I think it was a tough game for us especially after going a goal down early on.

"In the end we were not quick enough and did not stretch our opponents enough.

"Crystal Palace always play like that. They give you the game and then have one or two counter attacks. We had two or three good chances and so you end up with no goals and no points.

"I spoke last season about how referee should go to the screen more often so I think this was absolutely better with the VAR now."

Leeds' most recent win against Liverpool was by 2-1 in the Premier League at Anfield in April 2001.

Rio Ferdinand and Lee Bowyer scored for the visitors, while Steven Gerrard netted - and was later sent off - for the Reds.

Will Marcelo Bielsa's side be able to spring a shock at Anfield, where the hosts are unbeaten in their last 59 fixtures dating back to April 2017?

  5. 'Kouyate is a top player'published at 17:07 British Summer Time 12 September 2020

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace captain Scott Dann: "We finished last season on the wrong foot. We’ve been working in pre season to make sure we start in a different manner. The performance and points were very important going forward.

"It was a good defensive performance from the front all the way through. Our keeper made good saves at important times. We scored a great goal and perhaps could have killed it off.

"Cheikhou Kouyate is a top player and he showed what he is capable of in the back four.

"After lockdown last season Southampton picked up really well, had a lot of energy and pressed from the front and we felt we could capitalise on that.

"We’ve had a decent defensive record in recent seasons but maybe not scored enough goals to get us further up the league but we have more options now and hopefully they can fire us like today."

Leeds United are back on the big stage - and everyone could be forgiven for wondering what a full Anfield would be like for their meeting with Premier League champions Liverpool on their first day back.

It is the toughest of opening assignments and an early measure of what Leeds and their charismatic manager Marcelo Bielsa will face in the Premier League.

Liverpool will know the threat that always comes with facing a newly-promoted team on the first day of the new campaign.

Well that was brilliant and then ridiculous from Wilf Zaha!

On the break, he squares up Jack Stephens on the halfway line and absolutely toasts him for pace.

He should score but lashes the shot into the side-netting.

    Rob Green

Southampton haven't made the runs or created the options.

Crystal Palace are tired but they know the finishing line is in sight and they are quite comfortable seeing out this game.

Wifried Zaha is absolutely shattered. They could drop off and sit back but they're winning the ball back and killing time. It feels so good as a player, these moments, because you feel so confident.

Not THAT Mr.T: First example there of play being allowed to go and then flagged after the balls in the net. That's the right way to do it for consistency, otherwise teams are robbed of the CHANCE to score because of a Lino's mistake. Its progress.

I've watched Eze in the Championship for a while, he's very talented, but not always at the races.
