  1. 'Too open for Palace's liking'published at 16:20 British Summer Time 12 September 2020

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

    Rob Green
Former West Ham and England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's just a little too open for Crystal Palace's liking. I'd imagine they will want to slow it down and get control of the game again.

The more it opens up, the more that will suit Southampton. They will want that and it will see them get more and more chances.

Liz Tray: VAR just worked perfectly, and we should say so. In the split second, it looked like KWP caught the player on his shin maybe? It was not a red. He caught his foot, there's little danger. Ref was alerted, used the monitor, rescinded it. Absolutely flawless use of VAR.

Russell Gowers: Wow, use of the monitor and VAR to make the correct decision!! They could be onto something here...

Bresla Stephenson: great to see the pitch side monitors being used. For once a positive VAR story

BtheG: I'm already impressed by VAR and Arsenal this season

Hour gone. England man James Ward-Prowse threatens to waltz into the area but Cheikhou Kouyate makes an excellent tackle. He's not looked out of place in defence at all the big number eight.

Scott: Finally, proper VAR use in the EPL.

Vish: VAR finally working at some level.. hope it continues though!

Thomas Stockting: That was a fantastic use of VAR & the screen. Close to a being red, but right call to resing it. VAR off to a good start.

Mark Doughty: Absolutely great to see VAR actually getting using properly at last. Can't stand the guy, but well done Jon Moss

Wil Smallbone is a threat on the right for the Saints today, his cross is a threat and Danny Ings squuezes a shot off but it's charged down.

Nathan Redmond then scuffs one wide as the visitors continue to press.

Excellent. Excellent from the referee, excellent from everyone involved.

The referee made the wrong decision and he went over, had a look and no one batted an eyelid when he changed it.

It was never, ever a red card. The referee has got it absolutely spot on after the review.

  8. GREAT SAVE!published at 53 mins

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

It's all going on! Southampton think they are level as Che Adams drills in a volley but it's just too close to Vicente Guaita and he makes a brilliant save.

    Pure instinct.

I don't think it's a red card. There's no intent to hurt him.

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Kyle Walker-Peters earns a reprieve! It's just a booking after referee Jon Moss changes his mind.

Fair play to the officials there they got that right.

    REFEREE CHECKING MONITOR alert!

You don't see this very often. Tyrick Mitchell gets to the ball first and he's caught but could a booking suffice?

  12. RED CARD - Kyle Walker-Peterspublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 12 September 2020

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Come out firing a bit too much, perhaps. Kyle Walker-Peters looks bemused but he's got to go as he catches Tyrick Mitchell in the centre circle.

    Is that a bit harsh?

Kyle Walker-Peters now delivers a telling ball in from the right that evades friend or foe in the middle, a cracking cross from the full-back.

    Saints have come out firing.

  14. CLOSE!published at 47 mins

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

Better, good chance for the Saints! Che Adams and Danny Ings are involved on the fringe of the penalty area, Ings has the vision to slot in Nathan Redmond on his left.

It's more or less the same spot that Wilf Zaha scored from but Redmond can only drag his shot at Vicente Guaita.

    Tim Cahill
Former Everton midfielder on Final Score

Southampton have to draw the defence out to find space in behind. They just need a change of pace, a bit of creativity and somebody who is going to change the game.

  19. 'Palace in their comfort zone'published at 16:00 British Summer Time 12 September 2020

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

    Rob Green
Former West Ham and England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

When Southampton have the ball they press high and it's hard for Palace to get out at times.

But when they do get out, there is space in behind.

When Palace lose the ball they believe their eight are going to deal with it and the top two can stay up and wait for the break.

They're comfortable. Palace are in their comfort zone and it's something they were missing badly towards the end of last season.

  20. 'There's more spark about Palace'published at 15:59 British Summer Time 12 September 2020

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

    Dion Dublin
Former Aston Villa & Man Utd striker on Final Score

It's been an alright game - it's been very even stevens. Both sides have played well, kept the ball well and worked hard. I just think going forward there's more of a spark from Palace with the pace they have from the front three, Southampton need to up their pace in the final third.
