  1. Another painful exitpublished at 22:51 British Summer Time 26 August 2020

    FT: Celtic 1-2 Ferencvaros

Well, another painful exit from the Champions League for Celtic. Manager Neil Lennon says they "only have themselves to blame", and you can read our match report here.

The post-mortem will run for a few days, I would imagine. For me, it means I'll not be working many Tuesday or Wednesday nights at least. All about the Thursdays.

Speaking of which, we'll bring you all the action from Aberdeen and Motherwell's Europa League qualifiers tomorrow night. Cheers!

They are paying players huge money, and if there are players in there that think they are above this club and it's upsetting the results on the pitch, then that shouldn't be happening

Celtic are becoming more parochial every season. They're absolutely dominating Scotland, but they want to be doing it in Europe. They occasionally have nights like against Lazio, but then a meek exit against Copenhagen, and again tonight.

  5. Edouard a big misspublished at 22:35 British Summer Time 26 August 2020

    FT: Celtic 1-2 Ferencvaros

It was always going to be harder without the injured Odsonne Edouard, but the average positions chart below demonstrates how Celtic lacked a focal point in attack.

The front four ended up bunched together, and very narrow, and Ferencvaros were happy to deal with crosses (and there were 27 of them) as they came into the box.

Here's more from Celtic manager Neil Lennon: "I'll have to carry the can, and take the responsibility for it," he said on Sportsound.

"I don't know if it's attitude, mentality but we seem to have made the same mistakes as we did last year.

"Just poor, poor goals defensively and not a cutting edge in the final third when we're in control. I'm not saying Ferencvaros are a bad team, they're not, but looking at the game in the cold light of day, we had so much control of the game that we should've won. But we haven't.

"That doesn't make us weak, it doesn't make me weak but people will cast aspersions that we're not good enough. They are good enough, they haven't performed anywhere near what they can tonight and let the game get away from them."

"We'll have to make the most of it," Lennon added of the Europa League.

No wonder there's talk about Shane Duffy, someone who's happy to defend and a guy who's aggressive. Jullien and Ajer just want to be footballers half the time

  9. 'Football is about scoring' - Rebrovpublished at 22:18 British Summer Time 26 August 2020

    FT: Celtic 1-2 Ferencvaros

Ferencvaros manager Sergiy Rebrov has been giving his reaction to BBC Scotland's Sportsound: "We have beaten one of the best teams we've played in qualification this year and last year.

"We deserve this today. We knew the strength of the opponents, they controlled the ball. Most of the time we were defensive but football is about scoring goals. Up until the last minutes we were strong."

You have to agree with what Lennon's said, but its a shame he's had to say it. It's an exit that will cost them dear. We all know what the Champions League means to any club, but Celtic particularly at this time. £25-30m would have come in handy...

  11. 'If you don't want to be here, leave'published at 22:12 British Summer Time 26 August 2020

    FT: Celtic 1-2 Ferencvaros

Asked what his message to his players is, Neil Lennon said: "We have to do better. Get your mentality right, get your attitude right, If some of you don't want to be here, leave. Let us work with players who want to be here."

Asked if his impression was some players don't want to be at the club, he responded: "In some cases."

  12. 'Anger and frustration' for Lennonpublished at 22:04 British Summer Time 26 August 2020

    FT: Celtic 1-2 Ferencvaros

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has been giving his reaction on Sportsound.

"It's anger and frustration," he said. "The game was actually a lot easier than what I thought it was going to be, but we didn't take our chances. We had plenty of them.

"The first goal we can maybe legislate a little bit, the second goal is really poor decision making. It's individual mistakes. It's cost us against Copenhagen and it's cost us again tonight.

"It's not fine going out at this stage of the competition, because we're better than that."

You can create as many chances as you want. If you don't have good defensive qualities in your team you'll always be vulnerable. That's been their Achilles heel all the time in Europe.

That performance evokes memories of recent European exits. Last season against Cluj in the third qualifying round, Callum McGregor was played at full-back and Celtic collapsed late on as the Romanian's counter-attacked their way to victory.

Copenhagen did likewise to them in the Europa League last 32.

Neil Lennon's bold choice not to play a striker in the absence of Odsonne Edouard will come under close scrutiny.

The goals Celtic concede here in Europe... my goodness the winning goal tonight is an absolute shocker. Elhamed has had a nightmare. The cheapest of cheap goals. Yet again their defensive frailties have cost them. Celtic got what they deserved tonight. They should have learned their lesson from last season but they haven't.

  19. Europa League awaitspublished at 21:42 British Summer Time 26 August 2020

    FT: Celtic 1-2 Ferencvaros

Celtic had 28 shots on goal, but really a lot of them were from distance. They went behind to David Siger's early rocket, but equalised in the second half through Ryan Christie's deflected effort.

They were the dominant side, but then lost a goal on the break to Tokmac Nguen, and couldn't respond.

As a result, it's the glamour of the Europa League third qualifying round that awaits...
