    Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

Spurs' new signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is on, replacing Gedson Fernandes. Who I thought was doing well.

  2. YELLOW CARDpublished at 60 mins

    Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

There was a time for that fund, and it was in about 1997. But yes, quite.

Mason Mount gets away from Japhet Tanganga, who just ragdolls him to the floor for the most blatant booking you'll see.

Macca10: with the dramatic rise in COVID cases globally of late, you have to question the need for international football this season. Just scrap it until the next World Cup with a localised mini tournament to decide who qualifies beforehand.

McG: How are players being paid £100K plus a week in the @premierleague, external and clubs with the heritage of @thesilkmen, external are going down for £500K? It's obscene & shameful. Perhaps it's time for a fund to be created to help prevent things like this happening again.

Had 59 minutes on the Serge Aurier booking bingo card? You're a winner.

    Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea have been under the cosh with Frank Lampard looking far from pleased but here they come, skipper Cesar Azpilicueta given the green light to advance at his leisure and he ends up firing wide from 30 yards. A real once-a-season effort that.

  6. Postpublished at 55 mins

    Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

Great touch from Steven Bergwijn to take the ball into his stride at full speed, equally superb tackle from Fikayo Tomori. Spurs goal incoming?

  7. Postpublished at 52 mins

    Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

It's all Tottenham, the all to their nothing from the first half. Steven Bergwijn carries the ball nicely and picks out Serge Aurier, who scuffs a shot wide with his left foot. Spurs then swarm all over Chelsea to win the ball back, they just weren't even trying to do that in the first half.

  8. Postpublished at 52 mins

    Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea haven't come out for this second half.

  9. CLOSE!published at 51 mins

    Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

Better again, much more gusto from Spurs as Serge Aurier gallops down the right and picks out opposite full-back Sergio Reguilon arriving at full steam. He smashes in a shot and Chelsea's new keeper Edouard Mendy has his first proper save of the night, shoveling it over the bar.

It is clear to see Jose Mourinho has laid into his team at half time.

It has been a good response from them at the start of this second half.

Better from Spurs again as Steven Bergwijn lashes over from the edge of the area. Needed to use his left foot?

Re the demise of Macclesfield.... why didn't the wealthier members of the "football family" help them out.... they had debts of £500,000....a weeks wages for a couple of Premier League players.... indeed SHAMEFUL.

    Sean, Durham

Appreciating there is a risk the season may not finish and most consider there are too many games played in a season, you have to wonder if this tournament is one competition too many in the modern game?

  13. Postpublished at 48 mins

    Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

Spurs have some ball in midfield but Chelsea push and press them all the way back to Hugo Lloris. That's the difference in approach so far.

  14. Postpublished at 46 mins

    Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

Harry Kane is high-kicking his way down the touchline as he limbers up. Jose Mourinho would surely not want to use him tonight?

  15. KICK-OFFpublished at 45 mins

    Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea had 71% of the ball in the first half. They need a second goal fast to finish this one off.

While we waffle on about a substandard cup game here, our colleague Ellie Thomason has just been on the radio talking about much more important matters - the official demise of Macclesfield.

The club were relegated from League Two after the English Football League successfully appealed against a points deduction they argued was too lenient.

Macclesfield had been due to begin the National League season against Bromley on Saturday.

    Shameful.

Just wondering how many fans of other Premier League teams would be happy to have a fair few of this Tottenham team in their starting XI. Weak squad?

Chris in England, by way of Pennsylvania

I've thought for ages that teams in Europe shouldn't play in the league cup. Reduces fixture congestion, more clubs get a chance at a trophy than the usual suspects and therefore more clubs get a taste of European football. Win-win.

Very good from Chelsea, they have been exceptional. Jose Mourinho will not be a happy man.

Very contrasting team-talks, there are more goals for Chelsea going forward but work to do for Spurs.

It has been far too easy for Chelsea, we must have mentioned Jorginho 100 times in commentary. You can still be competitive with a patched up team.

The three Spurs midfielders have sat to protect their centre-halves and made hard work of things when it should be so much easier.

Ben Chilwell and Timo Werner look on the same wavelength already.

Nathan Gornall: This isn't worth the false belief we'll win trophies now. Bring back Poch. Trophyless yes, but at least we were happy.

Ben Kellow: After their summer spending spree I expected a lot more from Chelsea against a very weakened spurs side.

Tom McQuillon: Chill out on the criticism of Spurs. They are on their 3rd of 5 games in 11 days due to ridiculous scheduling. The players are going to have to manage their fitness and we’ll see a very slow, careful Spurs team. Shame they haven’t been allowed to compete
