Jose Mourinho moved Tottenham Hotspur to within one game of their first trophy in 13 years as they earned a Carabao Cup semi-final win over Brentford.

Spurs have not claimed silverware since they beat Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final and they were made to work hard before seeing off the Championship promotion chasers in this one-leg semi-final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Brentford had beaten four Premier League sides in the run to their first major semi-final but they were behind after only 12 minutes when Moussa Sissoko headed Sergio Reguilon's cross beyond Bees keeper David Raya.

Thomas Frank's side thought they had equalised after the hour when top scorer Ivan Toney headed in but the goal was ruled out for the most marginal of offsides when the striker was actually down on his haunches earlier in the move.

Spurs increased Brentford's sense of injustice when Son Heung-min raced clear to add a second after 70 minutes before the visitors were reduced to 10 men following Josh Dasilva's foul on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Mourinho's side will now meet either Manchester United or Manchester City the final at Wembley in April.

  3. 'We were brave and created chances'published at 22:34 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2021

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank, speaking to Sky Sports: "First and foremost, I must say I’m very proud of my team.

"The first VAR decision, we were inches from equalising. It was an open game, we had a top attitude, we were brave and an equaliser wouldn't have been a totally unfair result against a world-class team.

"If you want to go to a final against a top team, you need the margins with you but then they show class to get a second and after that it was game over. We need to remember Tottenham is a good team, so maybe in the beginning we could’ve pressed a tiny bit higher but it’s a combination of their quality as well.

"We gave that goal away but were in control and created chances. I praise the boys but we need to do better. For 65 minutes we completed against a world-class team. We were brave, we pressed high, we wanted to play and try to control the game.

"Maybe they had a chance more than us but we created opportunities and if you do that against a world-class team, then we know we need the margins to go our way too."

On Josh Da Silva's red card: "The way you have to look at it, if you look at Da Silva, he’s never had a red card before. I’ve never seen him go physical into a tackle, he didn’t do it on purpose and I think he caught him."

  4. 'We have to put the final in the pocket for three months'published at 22:27 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2021

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Brentford

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho, speaking to Sky Sports: "It’s a game that takes us to a final to, probably, but I hope not, an empty Wembley final but of course I’m very happy. We’ve had London derbies and other games but this is the match that took us to a final.

"The final is now in a pocket for three months, we have to wait for the final so we have to focus on what we have coming up. We have the FA Cup, the Premier League, the Europa league, so let’s forget the final for now. But when April arrives we have to be ready and to fight for the trophy.

"The game was always under control, They had the offside goal, when the ball goes in the air you cannot press the ball, you just have to try to get to the first and second ball.

"There was penetration on the right side and Davinson Sanchez was clever not to touch the guy. We didn’t play brilliantly, sometimes wrong decisions, sometimes one more touch, not with that soft control that allows you to play fast but the game is always under control against a team that will probably be in the Premier League next year."

On the red card decision: "I didn’t see it, I just saw the leg, I just saw the blood but apart from that I didn’t have time to look."

  6. 'Fantastic to be in the final'published at 22:20 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2021

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Brentford

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham defender Eric Dier, speaking to Sky Sports: "Really happy with the performance. I think we had control throughout the game against a very good side. It’s not surprising they have got this far in the competition but we made sure we were right in every way.

"In a cup competition, if you’re losing, you’ve got to chase the game but I think they play very open football, so we did well to manage that and when we got our chances we took them.

"Since I’ve been here, we’ve been wanting to lift trophies that motivation hasn’t changed. Some of the boys have been here a long time and desperate to win trophies.

"Everyone is aware it’s been a long time, so I just think we are trying to win. It’s fantastic to be in a final. There’s a lot of football to be played but it’s nice to take the opportunity to be in the first final possible."

On Josh Da Silva's red card: "It’s difficult, I saw it once on the big screen. It did look not very nice. I think it’s an unfortunate situation. I’m sure Pierre [Emile Hojbjerg] will be OK, he’s a big boy."

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Brentford

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Tottenham defender Eric Dier on 5 live: "We're really happy to be in the final after a really difficult game against a very good side, Brentford are just as good as a lot of teams in the Premier League.

"Every game is difficult, credit to Brentford they were very well organised. We knew if we were right in our approach we had the mentality to win.

"I felt it was offside straight away but I didn't know how close it was. If the technology was right then there's nothing to complain about really.

"We are trying to compete in every competition. This was our first chance to reach a final and we have taken it."

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Brentford

    Stephen Kelly
Former Tottenham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Spurs are as well equipped as they have ever been to take on the two Manchester clubs but those two clubs have been turning it on of late.

City are getting back to being a good side and United can attack so well but Tottenham are looking solid defensively.

Whoever they play, Tottenham will be a threat. They know how to beat City, it should make for a wonderful final whoever gets through.

Tottenham goalscorer Moussa Sissoko, speaking to Sky Sports: "We are all very happy, it’s been a long time and we’ve been waiting for that moment.

"We played a great game against a great team but we deserved to win. Now we’re going to go to Wembley and play either Manchester United or Manchester City.

"We'll be ready, doesn’t matter who we are going to play, let’s be ready for that game and hopefully we can win the trophy.

"It was good to score an early goal. I think we controlled the game and we scored the second goal in the second half and we deserved it. All the fans will be happy, now let’s be ready for the next game on Sunday."

On Brentford's disallowed goal: "I was sure it was offside because I could see [Ivan Toney] was behind me, so I was sure he was offside and the VAR showed it but again, let’s enjoy it and go to the final."

On reaching the final: "We are in the final so it’s the time to win it. The last final we reached was the Champions League final and we lost, so we were disappointed for many months. To play a final at Wembley, you don’t want to just play a final - you want to win it and we will try our best to win and bring the trophy home."

We complain about VAR but they got that call right - Ivan Toney was offside. That was the key moment as Son made it 2-0 straight after. That was the difference, Son is world class.

Lillie O'Neil: My prediction was correct Brentford gave a good game in the 2nd half & we made it hard on ourselves but we won.

Clinical by Spurs. Hope Brentford get promoted. Their football would be an excellent addition to the Premier League.
