    Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 Real Madrid

No response at all from Real Madrid. This is a shell of the side that so dominated Europe not that long ago.

  2. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 88 mins

    Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 Real Madrid

Two more home changes. Fernando and Alan Patrick are on for Viktor Kovalenko and Dentinho, who was limping after a heavy tackle. He scored the opener, though, so his work is done.

Manor Solomon scored what turned out to be the winner at Real on matchday one. He's scored the goal that is likely going to seal this win here too. Take a bow.

    Manor Solomon

    Can you believe it?!

Surely that is game, set and match for Shakhtar. It is a brilliant finish from the sub, who cuts inside his marker on the edge of the box and then fires a low shot into the corner.

A super tackle from Vitao prevents Vinicius Junior getting in down the left. Real come again but Modric's shot from range is blocked.

It is all Shakhtar. Tete goes for goal again, curling a shot into Courtois's hands. Real are distinctly second best right now.

Oh, two huge chances for the home side.

Tete does brilliantly to get to the byline and then pull the ball back for Viktor Kovalenko, who takes a heavy touch and allows Varane to dive in and block his shot.

Soon after, Tete's drive from a good spot is deflected, diverting it away from goal.

Cue movement on the Real bench.

  13. 'For me it's a lack of confidence in Adrian'published at 19:21 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2020

    Liverpool v Ajax (20:00 GMT)

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Leeds and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I find it very interesting that Adrian is left out - when you think of Adrian being on the bench recently, is it that Jurgen Klopp feels that Caoimhin Kelleher's at that level where he's been performing better in training. Or maybe he has more trust in him but that doesn't make sense not having him on the bench against Brighton at the weekend.

It's a strange decision, whether Klopp feels like he has enough to get through this game tonight and then concentrate on Adrian playing in the league at the weekend, whether that's the thought behind it. I find it very strange - for me it is a lack of confidence in Adrian.

Maybe Shakhtar are going to be bolder. A period of some lovely football sees the home side move the ball around the pitch, picking holes and giving Real something to think about. The Ukrainian champions are warming to this in a freezing temperature.

You would imagine that the rest of this game is going to be Real applying greater and greater pressure and Shakhtar dropping deeper and deeper.

Mendy looks to alter the scoreline but drags his shot across the face of goal and well wide. For a throw-in, in fact.

Varane looks to make immediate amends but his header from a free-kick is straight at Trubin.

    Dentinho

    The sub has done it!

The home side have been a lot more positive second half and they are rewarded via a quick counter-attack with healthy numbers pouring forward. It is also a bit of a gift, given to them by Varane, who pokes the ball straight to Dentinho in the box instead of clearing the misplaced pass into the box.

As it stands, Shakhtar are level on points with Real and ahead of them on the head-to-head.

    Shakhtar Donetsk 0-0 Real Madrid

In a flash, the home side are down the other end and Taison is drawing a very good save from Thibaut Courtois. Not had much to do the Real keeper but that was a really good stop with his legs.

    Shakhtar Donetsk 0-0 Real Madrid

Benzema turns creator as Real keep up the pressure. He works himself space on the right side of the box and then chips over a cross that Nacho rises to meet but heads over. Should have at least hit the target. Bet Benzema wishes he'd been on the end of his own cross.

Karim Benzema works himself a yard on the edge of the box and then drives a low shot that Trubin drops to save.
