CityFanSteveO: Clever from Pep. Not playing a striker sends a powerful message. The message being "We don't need a striker". Saves £100m at a stroke.

  5. 'They're the best in the world'published at 19:32 British Summer Time 6 April 2021

Man City v Borussia Dortmund (20:00 BST)

Borussia Dortmund interim boss Edin Terzic: "Considering what they do as a team in terms of pressing, in terms of set-pieces, how flexible they are with their formations and with their build-up play, they're the best in the world. But it's an incredibly exciting challenge.

"We know that they often use possession to tire out their opponents and create gaps for themselves. We'll need to be on high alert to ensure we keep these gaps closed, but also so that we find the right moment to win the ball back.

"Once we get going, it's also not easy for the opponent to stop us. Consequently, we'll need to show resilience at the right moment, but also the courage and the fight to hold our own and be successful ourselves."

Edin Terzic is the Borussia Dortmund interim coach in the true meaning of the word.

He replaced the sacked Lucien Favre in December but already knows Marco Rose, the current Borussia Monchengladbach boss, is taking over this summer.

"We want to take it up a notch from our last matches in the Champions League, and in particular from our last games in the Bundesliga, in order to seize the opportunity and potentially qualify for the next round," Terzic said.

"But we know that we have to be on full alert and produce the best performance we can in both clashes."

  8. Liverpool's chances of winningpublished at 19:23 British Summer Time 6 April 2021

Real Madrid v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

Simon Gleave, head of sports analysis, Nielsen's Gracenote: "Liverpool are the underdogs against Real Madrid according to the Euro Club Index , externalwhich gives the Reds a 47% chance of progress. This tie is the most closely matched of the four quarter-finals.

"Having reached the last eight of the Champions League, Liverpool's chance of winning the competition is back up to 11%. This is, however, much lower than during the group phase when the Euro Club Index ranked Liverpool as the number one team in the competition. Liverpool are ranked fourth amongst the teams remaining but their opponents Real Madrid are third."

Naby Keita is not up to speed, so why on earth would you take the risk to play him instead of Thiago? That seems a gamble. I can't see why you wouldn't play Thiago.

    Erling HaalandImage source, .

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has praised Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Braut Haaland but again defended City's reluctance to spend £100m on one player.

Dortmund are reported to want at least 150m euros (£128m) for the Norway international - but City's record signing is £62.8m Rodri.

"So far the club has decided not to spend close to £100m for a player," said Guardiola.

"Football is a team game, everyone contributes. It's not just one player.

"The only thing I can say is that, with his age, Haaland is an exceptional striker.

"Maybe in the future [spending more than £100m on one player] is going to happen if they decide it is necessary to improve the team for the next five, 10 years, for many reasons. But so far the club, the organisation, the CEO, the sporting director decided not to do it and that's why they didn't do it."

I don't think it matters who Pep picks in what position. They will move around the pitch and fill in the spaces. The quality Man City have all over the pitch - another Premier League side on the bench - he has got so much to choose from, he can't get it wrong.

Just for clarity, that's Juventus who haven't won the Champions League in Erling Braut Haaland's lifetime and might not even qualify next year.

Harish Lakka: Haaland to Man City will result on his talent being used by a team that makes 1000 passes before a chance. It will also result in him not winning the CL more than once. He should move to Barca or Real Madrid or Juve to continue their legacy.

  14. 'No problem with role of challengers'published at 19:12 British Summer Time 6 April 2021

Real Madrid v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: "We face a football-playing side which is very helpful for football in general but for our defending as well, that's why we have a chance.

"I heard outside everyone said Real Madrid are the favourites, no problem with that. They are used to the role and we have no problem with the role of the challengers."

Liverpool are not on a revenge mission from the 2018 final, says Jurgen Klopp.

In that game, Mohamed Salah was injured by a challenge from Sergio Ramos and left the field in tears - and Real Madrid won 3-1.

"My motivation is at the highest level because it's the Champions League," said Klopp.

"This has nothing to do with 2018 but when I got the draw - because it's the first time we played Real Madrid since then - of course I remembered the game.

"I said after that game that if somebody asked me a week later or a month later if I would invite Sergio Ramos to my 60th birthday, then I would say no. I would think about it again.

"He's a great footballer but I didn't like what happened that night. It was a strange night for us but it's long ago and I cannot get that feeling back, that anger or whatever, so I don't even try.

"We are not on a revenge tour here. I don't believe too much in revenge, but it would be nice to get through, because it would mean we are in the next round."

It was the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos who once remarked that "all overnight success takes about 10 years". Real Madrid's number nine, Karim Benzema, would almost certainly concur.

Now in his 12th season with Los Blancos, the footballing world is finally waking up to what Real Madrid have known all along, that the 33-year-old Frenchman is one of the world's great players.

When Real Madrid face Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday he has the chance to take centre stage. It is the first meeting between the teams since the 2018 final, when Benzema was more than prepared to play a supporting (but crucial) role to help the likes of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Not any more. Since the departure of Ronaldo to Juventus and Bale's loan to Tottenham Hotspur, Benzema has finally become his side's main man, its focal point.

He is no longer Real Madrid's best-kept secret.
