Summary

  • Aston Villa thump champions Liverpool 7-2 just hours after Tottenham hammer Man Utd 6-1

  • Anger, laughter and shock were just some of the emotions on an incredible night

  1. 'A historical win'published at 18:50 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to Sky Sports: “Manchester United doesn’t lose many matches, to lose by six is of course not every day. Historical victory but in the end three points and three very important points because we lost five points at home.

“We prepared ourselves very well tactically and also psychologically, the team was ready. So ready that a penalty in the first minute and going 1-0 down did not affect the team at all.

"Some people can say you play against 10 men for a long time which is true but for me it is also true that 11 v 11 we were playing extremely well, we were creating huge problems, we were winning 2-1 and they could not find solutions to control us."

On the red card: "I didn’t watch it. Maybe later I will. If someone can cry about the VAR decisions it is Tottenham and if someone cannot cry about VAR it is Manchester United for sure. I don't know, the only thing I know is we played extremely well. I told my players that a good result here would be to win and we did that."

On Dele Alli: "He has never stopped showing, I always told that I never had a problem with him. Very polite, very educated, behaving always well, he is training well, sometimes I want different things from him on the pitch. That is more about his qualities as a player than other things. He is a fantastic player as everyone knows.

"We have a very good squad, it is going to be difficult for everyone to play. We managed to play a crazy week with four matches and managed to play all four with players of quality and today we had fresh legs."

  2. 'What a day for us'published at 18:49 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

FT: Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham Hotspur

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham captain Harry Kane to BBC Radio 5 Live:

“What a day for us, I felt we were really on it today.

Everyone was really up for it, it showed our mind set how reacted. Even though they had a man sent-off we still had to be ruthless, and in the second half that’s what we did.

It’s massively important, you don’t want to go behind early but mentally I thought we were on it and it showed, we were ruthless at both ends of the pitch and after the first minute they didn’t really threaten.

The competition for places is excellent and there’s a real togetherness in the squad now, we wanted to put in a big 90 minutes before the international break."

  3. 'Where is the planning? Where is the strategy?'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    FT: Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

The fact that are United are scrambling around to sign players before the deadline tomorrow is the perfect illustration of everything that is wrong with Manchester United.

How can a team of that stature be in this position within 24 hours of the deadline? Where is the planning? Where is the strategy? Where is the direction that they are going?

The fact they've only added Donny van de Beek, and yes they may add to that, but Edinson Cavani still smacks of desperation. The questions remain about their recruitment policy regardless of how many players they bring in tomorrow. A club like Manchester United shouldn't do their business within 24 hours of the deadline.

Manchester United have lost their first two home games of a league campaign for just the fifth time in the club’s history, with 1986/87 being the previous occasion they suffered two defeats from two at Old Trafford.

I'm worried that we are going to be a club like Liverpool where I'm here in 30 years time talking about the past and not winning a premier League title till years in the future Woodward and glazers taking us to the dark ages and making us go backwards don't think all oles fault but he ain't man to take us forward but who's out there who could really take us to winning a premier League title poch? I don't think so.

Paul Pogba today was absolutely shocking, as was every single Manchester United player apart from David de Gea.

Where does Ole Gunnar Solskjaer go from here? It's just so bad. I can't understand the gaps in their back four. Harry Maguire gets drawn out all the time and he can't get back.

  8. 'We felt really good before the game'published at 18:39 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham's Harry Kane, speaking to Sky Sports: "Obviously we got off to the worst possible start but we felt good before the game and in the warm up.

“We had to take our chances and getting the third and fourth really killed the game and then it was about staying focussed. We felt really good before the game. The way we reacted after the start showed the mindset we are in.

"We are taking advantage of being more ruthless when the chances come."

Red card make a difference? "I think we were on top of the game by then, we had a foothold on it. The fact we took our chances really killed the game."

  9. 'United will struggle to get top four'published at 18:39 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    FT: Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham

    Robbie Savage
Ex-Wales midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I thought at the start of the season if you finished above Manchester United you'd win the league, I honestly thought that because their transfer policy should be able to get four players in, especially with being in the Champions League, but that isn't going to happen now.

On the basis of today, and how teams have started the season, United will struggle to get in the top four.

Oakeswell: Not sure why people are so surprised at Man U’s mediocrity. Their historical successes have been two periods of domination, 30 years apart, each based on a Scotsman inheriting a great youth team. Before, in between, and now after, they’re just another team.

  11. 'We were really on it'published at 18:38 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Man Utd 1-6 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham striker Harry Kane, speaking to BBC Sport: "What a day for us. We were really on it, mindset wise and in the warm up. We go behind after a minute. But it shows the mindset how we responded. Even after the sending off we had to be ruthless. Second half was about being focused and winning comfortably.

"You never want to go behind early but if you react you can switch the momentum. You have to be up for the big games and be ruthless in both boxes. After that first minute they didn't cause any problems.

"When you play so many games it is difficult but there is competition for places and togetherness. It is the one last push before the break.

"I just want to keep going. As the season go by, score as many as I can. Hopefully a few more before the end."

  12. 'Maguire isn't a Manchester United captain'published at 18:33 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    FT: Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham

    Robbie Savage
Ex-Wales midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

The United defence was out of shape and had no leadership - the goals that they conceded were so bad. Luke Shaw kept going inside, over covering. United weren't switched on, they weren't running back.

At 6-1 down Eric Bailly was squared up trying to tackle, be a bit more aggressive with your defending and keeping the ball out of your net.

Harry Maguire - a Manchester United captain? Seriously? He's a good player but a Manchester United captain? It was schoolboy defending and there was little to no desire.

  13. 'A few felt sorry for themselves'published at 18:32 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Arsenal 2-1 Sheffield United

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder, speaking to Sky Sports: "First half we were good defensively. We weren't playing with freedom or confidence. Got a foothold in the game. We gave away the ball and that stopped us getting up the pitch. Out of possession we were good. We got opened up quickly, giving the ball away again cheaply to good players. Were 2-0 down and it is different last 30 minutes.

"I think a few felt sorry for themselves when the second goal went in.

"Somebody needs to take responsibility. Risking, not being afraid to do something. Stand up and say the game isn't done, which it wasn't. There is nothing to lose from our point of view, Sheffield United coming to Arsenal."

  14. 'It makes no difference if I get a call'published at 18:32 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Arsenal 2-1 Sheffield United

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder, speaking to BBC Sport: "My phone is off. It makes no odds the calls I get (from the Premier League). We've all seen the shirt getting pulled (by David Luiz). Doesn't matter how big. Is it a tug or not? Is he pulling his shirt off his back or not? He pulled the shirt and he is last man.

"You have to come here and be solid. We are lacking belief and confidence because of the results. Structure of the team was good but our attacking play want as good as I wanted. We kept giving the ball away at the top of the pitch.

"After 45 minutes it is OK in my thoughts. We'd had a couple of opportunities but a couple of goals in a heartbeat changed the game. They are the better team. Mikel has done a fantastic job here. We are in a different place. Bit disappointed my platers felt a bit sorry for themselves, which is not recognisable from my point of view. We come alive for 10-15 minutes but it wasn't enough.

"We've improved the squad in the summer but we have to deliver and we are not at the moment. Rhian (Brewster) will add quality. You need good players around and we have signed a really good young talent."

  15. 'Everyone in the squad needs to make an impact'published at 18:30 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Arsenal 2-1 Sheffield United

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to Sky Sports: "I am really pleased against a difficult opponent. We had total control in the first half. We attacked with purpose and created issues for them. But it is the Premier League and you need to score the third. We needed to hang in there.

"We have good options up front. The way the game was developing I knew Auba would be a threat. I demand that everyone in the squad makes an impact."

On Bukayo Saka: "I am very impressed. I did not expect a header from him. It is a new thing for him."

On Hector Bellerin: "He is improving day by day. Defensively he is doing a lot of work. It is great. We need full backs to add creativity in the final third."

As a Hull City season ticket holder I watched Maguire week in week out and every time I saw him I said no way is he a top defender and nothing has changed. If he's worth £85 mil I must be worth £20 mil with arthritis in both knees.

  17. 'It was hard today'published at 18:30 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Arsenal 2-1 Sheffield United

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was hard today. A hard week, physiologically and psychologically. It takes a lot to play Liverpool twice. I knew it would be tricky today. A tricky team who are well organised. You need to know how to attack and not concede set-pieces.

"We scored two really good goals but in the Premier League if you don't score a third you need to hang in.

"The way he is dealing with everything coming so early is good. The maturity he is showing. He gets the call up and attention and to perform makes me really happy."

  18. 'We have to improve'published at 18:29 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Wolves 1-0 Fulham

    Wolves

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "We started the game well, organised. We had some problems in attack. Fulham were organised. Second half we were much better, we created and were on the front foot and got the goal.

"It was important to bounce back from last week but we know it is important to improve.

"We made a lot of things better than last week but with our standards I believe we should do better. We should manage the game better after we score and we should manage the game better."

On players going for international duty: "We are proud our players go now to national teams but I think the schedule is not correct. It is the pandemic and everyone has to adjust so we assess and decide and keep them going."

  20. 'United were an absolute shambles'published at 18:28 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

Ex-Wales midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

United's recovery runs were non-existent, the desire to defend was non-existent, the organisation was non-existent - it was an absolute shambles.
