Summary

  • Aston Villa thump champions Liverpool 7-2 just hours after Tottenham hammer Man Utd 6-1

  • Anger, laughter and shock were just some of the emotions on an incredible night

  1. 'Credit to Grealish'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Aston Villa 1-0 Liverpool

    Clinton Morrison
Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

What did I tell you about the goalkeeper? You will miss someone like Alisson. It's a big mistake.

I know Liverpool want to play out from the back but you can't always do it. It's a poor, sloppy ball but credit to Jack Grealish, he gets on the end of it and he's got the vision to pick Ollie Watkins out.

  2. goal

GOAL - Aston Villa 1-0 Liverpoolpublished at 19:20 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Ollie Watkins (4 mins)

Don't do anything silly....ah. It's not been a vintage weekend for Premier League goalkeepers has it?

Adrian tries to play out and maybe shouldn't bother as instead of a simple pass to Joe Gomez he instead plays it to Jack Grealish. He squares it to Ollie Watkins who has a tap-in for his first Premier League goal!

    Aston Villa 0-0 Liverpool

Really good start from the hosts as Matty Cash floats in a dangerous cross from right-back but it zips right through the penalty area.

  4. 'Worst day as Man Utd boss & player'published at 19:19 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Man Utd 1-6 Tottenham

    Manchester United

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It's my second language so it's very difficult to put it into words. It's a horrible feeling, the worst day I've had as a Manchester United manager and player. I've been part of big defeats before and we've bounced back so we've just got to let the boys go away on international duty, find their mojo themselves and the others that are going to stay here, we've got to help them. After a result like this you need to clear your mind and head and look forward.

"Sometimes you make mistakes, that's part of life and we made too many mistakes in one game of football and that shows in the result against a very good football team. They are a team full of quality and we got punished almost every time we made a mistake."

How they bounce back from this: "If it's a different shape, mentality, I don't know, but it will be different. We can't accept performances like this. I hold my hands up, I'm in charge and i'm responsible for this."

    Aston Villa 0-0 Liverpool

Ross Barkley, Jack Grealish, Douglas Luiz, John McGinn. That's a decent midfield Villa have assembled isn't it?

Grealish is in to the danger zone straight away, putting over a cross which Andy Robertson sweeps clear at the far post.

Three goals in the first 10 minutes again? We're under way at Villa Park.

  7. 'It is embarrassing'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Man Utd 1-6 Tottenham

    Manchester United

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking to Sky Sports: "After 2-1 we were still in the game after the red card everything went wrong . You don't win games by making individual mistakes, errors and a performance like that.

"When we get the start we did you think you have the game how you wanted. But you make bad decisions and then you're two or three down. It is embarrassing, I hold my hand up, it is my fault. It is not Manchester United. The red is no excuse. The boy might be having an operation on his throat though! It is a bad reaction from Anthony. But if that (Lamela) was one of my players I'd hang him out to dry going down like that. He shouldn't react like that.

"Its nowhere near good enough. When you have a defeat like this you have to look yourself in the mirror. They are going away on international duty and that the ones that stay have time to work. That is hard as we need to get together and battle.

"We defend as a team, from the front. Whoever we are linked with doesn't mean it is true. We need as a group to get a performance as they were after the restart. We were a good defensive team. But we can't be as open as we are today.

"It is not about getting players in but who is here. Today is the worst. I can't say any more than that. When you are 2-1 down you are in with a chance. 3-1 a minute later is hard. At 4-1 down it is about character and personality. We had to close their avenues to goal but we didn't come out with any aggression. There are a lot of wrongs today. We need to look at everything."

  8. 'We have to come out fighting'published at 19:11 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Man Utd 1-6 Tottenham

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tells BBC Sport: "It is the worst day of my career as Manchester United manager and the worst day for all of them as United players.

"It is not the worst day in Manchester United history, we have bounced back before.

"To explain now is quite difficult. We have been beaten 6-1 at home by a very good side but we have contributed a lot to our own downfall.

"The red card make a lot of difference but Anthony Martial, well done for staying up when he was struck by the arm of Erik Lamela, you don't react but he hit his throat with two fingers, gave him a little slap and Lamela must be having an operation. If that was my son, I know what I would tell him. Anthony knows he should not react like that, the good thing is he did not go down but if he did maybe the other lad would be sent off.

"I know the boys wanted to and they made an effort but making mistakes, everyone makes mistake and today we made loads in the same game. That shows in the result.

"We have to address what we have. The players there are better than what we are showing and we have to come out fighting as a group. Any transfer updates, the window closes tomorrow night, then we will know."

  9. Alisson out for a while?published at 19:10 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

Aston Villa v Liverpool (19:15 BST)

    Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports about Alisson's injury in training: "Two players clash, one gets up one doesn't - the one who didn't was Ali. He cannot play today, we have to further assessment.

"We hope it will go really quick. The international break is coming, we are pretty sure he will not be ready after that."

  10. 'Very good, very impressive but not a surprise for me'published at 19:09 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham Hotspur

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Very good, very impressive but not a surprise for me. The result is a surprise, you don’t expect to come here and win 6-1. I could come here 20 more times and not win by the same scoreline.

"It happened because the team is phenomenal and has great character and great confidence. We were the best team for all of the first half, we had to respect the club. We had to respect the history of Manchester United. They never give up. But we managed to get the three points.

"I haven’t watched it yet (Martial's red card) I don’t know, but I have to wait and watch.

"From the top of the club, from the board to the structure. They have given us this squad and without this squad and these options it wouldn’t be possible but it allows us to have these crazy weeks and allows us to rotate. Otherwise we would arrive here naked and not be able to do these things.

"Gareth (Bale) is not injured anymore and will hopefully be back for the next couple of matches."

  11. Postpublished at 19:08 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

The fallout from OT will be long and it will be painful. But we've got another game kicking off in minutes - the champions no less!

  12. 'You're an embarrassment'published at 19:06 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

More from former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra on Sky Sports.

Evra played in United's last 6-1 defeat against Manchester City nine years ago.

    "It's different. I know we talk about the 6-1 - it's different.

"Make sure you realise you're embarrassing the club. Look in the mirror and be honest - you're an embarrassment.

"The international break is bad news because they have to stick together."

  13. 'Not the worst day'published at 19:04 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Manchester United

"It's not the worst day in Manchester United's history" is Ole Gunnar Solskajer's opening line to MOTD.

I mean, that's one way of looking at it...

Time to redefine 'Spursy' in the footbaling lexicon yet?

  15. Postpublished at 19:00 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

There was no update from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the potential signing of Edinson Cavani, or any other transfers. There was a man in the background ripping up a list on a piece of paper but I'm sure that's just coincidence.

  16. 'Spineless'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham

    Manchester United

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville on Sky Sports: "I can't believe we are where we are. There's no excuse for those players on that pitch because they were absolutely pathetic. Spineless in that second half.

"I think these players expected to get help [in the transfer window] but they've not helped themselves.

"City and Liverpool pulled away psychologically before the season even started."

  17. 'With this squad we can make it'published at 18:57 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to MOTD: “It is history for Tottenham, history for my boys and I cannot deny it is also history for me.

"I won many times in this stadium, mostly with Manchester United but also with Chelsea, Real Madrid and now Tottenham.

“It is a victory of the squad, not just the team but the squad. It is a victory of the confidence, the team is so confident. To concede in the first minute we could have been destroyed. I feel very happy, it is an honour for us to have this unique record in this stadium.

“We were the best team. They couldn’t stop us when we were 11 v 11. We were winning already, we were missing chances. The performance was very, very impressive.

"The squad made it, Chelsea, Maccabi and Manchester United – the squad made it. If the squad made it, my club structure made it because that made it possible to have this squad. We came here with fresh legs with some players injured and some in the stands. We can face competitions.

"The message this week was that together and with this squad we can make it."

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw on Sky Sports: "It was a lack of concentration and then a mistake, another mistake, another mistake. We switched off. It really hurts.

"Manchester United shouldn't lose in this manner. It really hurts, it's embarrassing and we've let a lot of people down. We've let ourselves down and the staff down.

"We need to look in the mirror, we are nowhere near it at the moment. Maybe it's lucky that we've got a break now.

"When we went down to 10 men maybe we gave up, there wasn't that character on the pitch. We were too quiet and naive. There was many mistakes, we need to do more.

"It's embarrassing. I was embarrassed on the pitch. We need a long hard look at ourselves."

  20. 'Every team looks like Bayern'published at 18:50 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra on Sky Sports:

"Every team against Manchester United looks like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich. I really don't want to laugh right now - I'm really angry."
