Summary

  • Aston Villa thump champions Liverpool 7-2 just hours after Tottenham hammer Man Utd 6-1

  • Anger, laughter and shock were just some of the emotions on an incredible night

  1. goal

GOAL - Aston Villa 2-0 Liverpoolpublished at 19:38 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Ollie Watkins (22 mins)

Blimey what a goal that is! Jack Grealish sends Ollie Watkins away down the left and he beats Joe Gomez, cuts inside and then absolutely larrups a shot across Adrian and into the top corner.

A very smart bit of business from Brentford!

  2. CLOSE!published at 20 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool fully on top now as Roberto Firmino spies a gap and gets through it, working the ball on to his left foot and rattling in a shot which Emi Martinez saves at his near post.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Liverpool

As Mr Meatpants says, playing out from the back isn't as easy as they think. Now Villa keeper Emi Martinez is at fault, playing it straight to Mo Salah on the right. He finds Roberto Firmino, who is closed down, and then Douglas Luiz does well to block the shot from Naby Keita.

Roberto Firmino should score - it's a good save from Emi Martinez but Firmino should pick his spot and put that in the bottom corner. If that falls to Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane it's a goal.

Archibald Meatpants: We're only four games in but how many sides have already come to grief because of this pestilential obsession with 'playing out from the back'? Pep's got a lot to answer for.

  8. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 15 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Liverpool

And then John McGinn gets a challenge in on Mo Salah and sends the Egyptian over. Was that a pen?!

Nervous glance up from McGinn as he clears his lines. Nothing given.

  9. GREAT SAVE!published at 14 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Liverpool

Roberto Firmino is in, lovely one-touch stuff, Emi Martinez makes the save! Great block.

Villa's transfer business this summer looks really strong.

ReindeerHotdog: This game is highlighting where Liverpool need to improve. They need a better backup goalkeeper and I hate to say it, a better centre-back than Joe Gomez. We've known it for a couple of seasons - let's hope we finally act on it before the transfer window shuts.

You've got to back even further than that the last time Everton looked this dangerous I think Tim.

Liverpool are building up a head of steam now though, another dangerous Andy Robertson cross is hacked clear.

BBC Sport does not condone putting your kids in the attic for two weeks without food. Just to clarify.

  14. 'Lamela's reaction is an absolute joke'published at 19:29 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

    Man Utd 1-6 Tottenham

    Manchester United

More from Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on BBC Radio 5 Live, talking about the sending off of Anthony Martial: "This is like a very two-edged sword for me. Anthony, well done for not going down when the lad struck you in the throat but then you shouldn't react to it like that with a slap in his throat. If you do that there's always a chance they are going to send you off, but come on if that was my son I'd put him in the attic for two weeks without food. You don't go down like that, at all. It's an absolute joke."

On any potential transfers before the window shuts at 23:00 BST tomorrow night: "You can look at it both ways, we are always looking to strengthen but we know that the players that are here are so much better than this and I've got to address that first and then let's see where we're at tomorrow night and if there any potential incomings or outgoings."

Good from the champions, Naby Keita has an effort blocked, Gini Wijnaldum fizzes it out to Andy Robertson and his cross in looks likley to serve up a tap-in but Matt Targett does well to clear.

Since the start of last season, only Aleksandar Mitrovic and Jamie Vardy (both 28) have scored more league goals in the top four tiers of English football than Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins (27, inc. playoffs).

Ross Barkley has to score! It's a great chance. We were bigging him up as a goalscoring midfielder earlier.

  19. CLOSE!published at 8 mins

Oh what a chance for two! Jack Grealish again is elusive on the left and he finds Ross Barkley breaking into the area, the former Everton man is one on one with Adrian and drags it wide!

    Great chance.
