Maybe the recent results are a wake up for the 'top clubs' that none of them are unbeatable. I'm a Liverpool fan, but always enjoy seeing so called smaller, less talented teams having a go and putting it up the big clubs. Well done Villa. Time to think Liverpool?

Ever since that 2-1 loss against Arsenal last season this Liverpool team has let becoming champions get to their heads. There's confidence and then there is arrogance. Hopefully they will go back to humble beginnings and start over.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk talking to Sky Sports: "It's hard to lose the way we lost tonight. First and foremost well done to Aston Villa, we have to give them the credit they deserve. It was one of those performances where we weren't 100% at it from start to finish. The goals we conceded we should have done, but also the chances that we had, we should have done better. Overall we're all disappointed, we shouldn't have lost with the numbers that we did but it's about sticking together and making sure it doesn't happen again.

"You can't take the credit away from Aston Villa, but we should have been more clinical. In all aspects of the game we should have done much better. It's important not to get crazy but we've got to step it up and the performance level between the Arsenal league win and today was too big."

Did losing Sadio Mane and Alisson affect you? "We prepared well and we played a good game against Arsenal in midweek. Our preparation was good and we were ready for it before the game. Unfortunately in the game it didn't happen how we wanted it to."

Jurgen Klopp credits Aston Villa and says his own side had plenty of chances - "maybe not enough to make it 7-7 though."

Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I can’t believe it really. Getting one goal is good but three is unbelievable. I think 1-0 up gives us confidence, we grew into the game and punished them. I came away with a hat-trick but think I could have got more. It is bitter sweet.

"Ross [Barkley] has only been in a few days but in training we are linking up well. I link up well with Jack [Grealish] as well and I’m glad Ross is here."

On Dean Smith's half-time message: "Just keep going. We scored four in one half so they can. It’s not over yet."

Aston Villa's hat-trick hero Ollie Watkins talking to Sky Sports: "I think when the first one went in I pinched myself a bit because of how early it was. I'm delighted to contribute and that we won at the end of the day.

"It's unbelievable to score and get a hat-trick, before the game i wouldn't have thought that I'd score three. After the first one I grew in confidence, but I probably should have scored more than three in the end. I'd back myself to score some of the chances that I missed.

"We saw how high they play and the game plan was to get in behind and you could see that it worked. We fancied ourselves today but I'm not sure we thought it would have been that score. It was more about making sure they couldn't pass through us and we all worked hard and it showed tonight."

This team have been far too arrogant since winning the title, during the restart last season and now this season. Its been coming and its back down to earth with a bang for them.

    Liam in Dronfield

I think it's just the kick up the backsides we needed. We've looked suspect for a while now with this high line and this result will hopefully rectify the issue going forward. It's only one game and there's only two other teams who haven't lost yet, both of those will lose at some point.

Abid: At the start of the season I thought Man City would win the league. After their poor start I wondered if perhaps Liverpool will reclaim their title. Now I genuinely don't know who seem like favourites. Insane day in the Premier League.

Transfer deadline round the corner. I’m 32, overweight and have played centre back in a few charity games. I reckon I might get a look in. At any team in the top flight. I have low(ish) wage demands and would be free with no agent fees. ‬

Huge credit must go to Aston Villa, it was a brilliant game. It was a better game than the one at Old Trafford too.

People need to calm down. This performance has been utterly terrible but it is only one game out of 38. If we win the next 34 then this will be insignificant. Not justifying the performance but people need to stop acting like this is a title decider.

It's a fantastic result, an unbelievable one. Aston Villa thoroughly deserved it. They got a bit fortunate with a couple of deflections but this season they are getting into those goal scoring positions and being more ruthless. They've had a great start to the season.

Ross Barkley will be disappointed that he's left Chelsea but he'll probably play every week here. He's been very good, I've always rated him. I think playing here, week in week out, will get the best out of him.
