I'm not sure I really follow that argument. Are defenders fuleed by abuse or something?

Ross Barkley is in down the middle again. He'll get some goals this season if he keeps this up.

Darren W: I don’t believe these results and scores would be happening under normal circumstances... no crowds have to be having a massive impact in equaling things up. It has to be.. the amount of goals and attacking football/defensive mistakes just do not happen

It's a great finish. It's a great touch from Mohamed Salah, he doesn't even wait and move the ball, it's just a great finish into the bottom corner.

Is it still game on? You just never know.

Joe Gomez has indeed been hooked. On comes Curtis Jones so Fabinho should go back into defence.

Gomez has looked way off the pace tonight. At fault for 4 of the goals. TAA not much better. Poor positioning between them alongside the insistence on this high line has killed Liverpool.

    Mo Salah (60 mins)

This is like a game of NBA Jam. Relentless, end-to-end attacking as Mo Salah has his second! What an excellent finish too, characteristically, collecting a pass from Roberto Firmino and firing in.

I think for the health and safety of everyone concerned it's a good job he isn't.

Shame Roy Keane isn't in the sky studio tonight...be difficult for Jurgen to defend this...

This is a shock result, it's a huge result. Nobody would have predicted this score.

How big is this? Well, Liverpool have conceded five goals in a PL game for only the fourth time ever, and first since September 2017 vs Man City.

It's game over. It takes a wicked deflection and there isn't much that Adrian can do about that. Ross Barkley deserves that.

If Alisson is in goal, he might save that, because he's bigger than Adrian.

    Ross Barkley (55 mins)

Ok, this really is INCREDIBLE now! What a day of Premier League football and Ross Barkley has a goal on his debut that he has been threatening all evening!

That will be a third assist of the game for Jack Grealish too, exchanging passes with Barkley before the former Everton man takes aim from 20 yards.

It takes a deflection off (I think) Diogo Jota and spins, loops over the dive of Adrian and finds the back of the net.

Liverpool have had 73% of the possession and the same number of shots and shots on target as Villa. But...

It might be entertaining but are all these extreme scorelines due to the absence of fans? There seems to be a trend for teams to capitulate which never used to happen. Or is it simply the teams have forgotten how to defend?

That's excellent as well from Ollie Watkins, the first Villa player to score a treble against Liverpool in 88 years, as he holds it up, flicks it over the head of Joe Gomez and wins the foul. He's a fairly complete forward.

    Aston Villa 4-1 Liverpool

Diogo Jota looks to get away again down the Liverpool left but he's fouled Matty Cash in the process. That's five minutes ticked off for Villa fans.

Diogo Jota and then Andrew Robertson both get free on the left but neither can find a team-mate with a cross.

It's time for Takumi Minamino to step up. It took time, but this season, I know he hasn't been given the opportunities, but it's games like this that you need your signings to step up and it's an opportunity for him.
