  1. 'We’re in pantomime season'published at 12:55 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Manchester United

    Barney Chilton, Red News:

’So if I have this right, Plan A was Jadon Sancho.

And then suddenly we realise with a few hours to go that Borussia Dortmund are going to stick to the line they have put out for the last month. Funny that. And we scramble looking for an alternative like a child on a dodgem car.

The wiser amongst us may have thought if that were the case, why not then use the money we had put aside for someone like Jack Grealish - but no, no, common sense shouldn’t come into play by a club appearing to act like they are playing it all like a computer game.

So it’s Dembele. Oh, no it’s not. Yes, we’re in pantomime season. And like the last one I had the misfortune to be at decades ago, I could cry.

You can only imagine what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must be feeling. And no doubt, we’ll have another player to pop into the list in a few hours.

One of the great names in football is on the move. Nortei Nortey has joined Scottish side Queen of the South on loan from Chorley.

    Hmmm...

I am trying to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee at a pavement cafe on Fulham road and there's a Geezer riding up and down with the window wound down shouting "anyone seen my nephew Frankie boy, I've got a couple of sneaky deals to interest him. Nice little earners" What's all the fuss about?

  5. Why so quiet at Real Madrid?published at 12:38 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

Remarkably, La Liga champions Real Madrid are set to get to today’s deadline without signing any new players this summer. And that’s despite the departures of Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez, Achraf Hakimi and Sergio Reguilon.

Publicly at least, head coach Zinedine Zidane doesn’t seem bothered at all by the lack of activity, saying “I have not discussed any transfers. I am happy with the side we have, and we are going to try to have a good season.”

Like Arsenal, they were linked with Houssem Aouar but that came to nothing.

So why has it been so quiet at Real? Well, like most clubs they’ve been hit hard by the financial consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, in a year when they’ve been spending a lot of money on the remodelling of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. There are also rumours that they are saving money so that they can make a huge bid for PSG’s Kylian Mbappe next summer.

While I'm thinking about just how busy Simon Stone is today, a reminder that he's going to be answering some of the questions you've been submitting. You can watch that at the top of this page at 13:00 BST.

Be amazed if his phone doesn't ring while he's on air.

Newcastle may be quiet but Manchester United are expected to be busy and our man Simon Stone is all over the potential ins and outs there.

I wouldn't like to see Simon's phone bill, his handset is glued to the side of his face on day's like today.

  8. All quiet at Newcastlepublished at 12:27 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

Unusual position for Newcastle United but their transfer business has been done early in this window.

The club will confirm at some point today the signing of Peruvian playmaker, Rodrigo Vilca but the plan is to play the 21-year-old in their development squad rather than the first team.

  9. Yaya Toure on a free?published at 12:20 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

Newly promoted La Liga side Cadiz enquired about Yaya Toure in the summer and had discussions with the player.

It is understood there is interest in the 37-year-old from the Middle East, Asia and America. The Ivorian is on the record as saying he wants at least one more year playing before moving into coaching.

Could he be an option for European sides looking for a free when the window closes?

Poor P in Croydon, it seems his opinion is a fairly unpopular one...

RE P in Croydon [11.56]: To all LFC fans, especially P in Croydon. Relax. Yes, last night was embarrassing but I'd rather have that result and be WWWL as opposed to going WLD (City) or LWL (Utd). It's a one-off and Klopp will fire the boys up for the derby. And replace him with Poch? P from Croydon has obviously "lost the plot" as Jurgen would say!

RE P in Croydon [11.56]: Klopp hasn't improved the squad since the title win? He's signed alcantara and jota or did you miss that?

  12. Loftus-Cheek weighing up movespublished at 12:05 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek is weighing up whether to accept a deadline-day loan move.

The England international has been squeezed out as manager Frank Lampard has reshaped his squad.

He has received a number of offers to leave Stamford Bridge on a short-term basis.

However, he has yet to decide which, if any, option to take.

Drew: So is that Ed’s boots put up on the table already then? Ready to sniff a fine Cognac and think “That went well...”

Fergie's mantra was all about improving after a title win... Klopp clearly hasn't done that and shown himself to be unwilling to do so. Sounds crazy but with Poch available, do we need a change?

  16. Smalling to stay at Man Utdpublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Chris Smalling looks like he will be staying at Manchester United.

The former England defender spent last season on loan at AS Roma and has been training on his own since returning to Carrington at the start of pre-season.

It had been thought some kind of agreement might be reached for Smalling to return to the Italian capital.

However, nothing has materialised so far and unless the situation changes quickly, he will remain at United at least until January.

    Smalling’s contract expires in 2022.

  20. No more action on Tyneside?published at 11:38 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Newcastle United

    Norman Riley, True Faith fanzine:

With the takeover of the club falling apart on the verge of the season, Steve Bruce did well in bringing the players in he did.

Ryan Fraser, Jeff Hendrick, Jamal Lewis and especially Callum Wilson have all improved the squad. Having a proven Premier League forward already seems to be paying dividends. The signings have strengthened the starting 11.

The club has been linked with Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan. I don’t think it will happen, but he is an excellent player.

Another centre-forward would be ideal, as would a central-midfielder. I cannot see anything happening, unfortunately.
