Re: Paul Malecki post [10:28] - Woodward is totally at fault. He pronounced United were the richest club in the world, and they could afford to buy anyone. From an opposition standpoint, the valuation goes up as soon as United enquire. Maguire was never worth £80m, but 'the club that can afford to buy anyone' had the waters tested by Leicester and are probably still laughing about it. Woodward is a terrible negotiator...

    Leicester City

    Chris Forryan, LeicesterTillIDie.com:

A month ago and following on from the bad restart to last season that Leicester had I was concerned we hadn’t made any signings.

However, fast forward and three signings in I am very happy. [Timothy] Castagne has settled in well making up the three Belgian musketeers and could prove to be the buy of the window.

Cengiz Under looks a very exciting prospect on the wing and we finally got Wesley Fofana who is an exciting prospect for the future.

Brendan Rodgers said he wanted five signings so could we still make two more? Maybe not as things stand as a resurgent Mendy in Midfield and a fit again Amartey in defence is like having two new signings.

A move for a striker to cover Jamie Vardy could be an option, while Demarai Gray could leave.

I think David sent that in to us before Villa dismantled Liverpool for 7 (SEVEN) last night.

  5. 'Need another striker'published at 11:22 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Aston Villa

David Michael, My Old Man Said podcast:

The main priority was upgrading the first XI, so in that respect, it’s been a very good window. Emiliano Martinez, Matty Cash, Ollie Watkins, Bertrand Traore and Ross Barkley, all improve the team and should make Villa a different proposition this season.

Improved contracts for Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings were big news in terms of Villa’s evolution as a Premier League force again.

The main need is another striker. Last season a lack of forwards almost cost the club its place in the Premier League, after Wesley got injured in January.

There would be similar problems if Watkins spent any time out. Even a short-term loan option to cover Wesley's rehabilitation (back in the new year) would make sense.

All this talk about Man Utd's defensive inadequacies, did anyone notice Liverpool let in 7 (SEVEN) yesterday? That was with eleven men too, including "the best defender in the world". Feel a bit sorry for the Villa fans with their magnificent humiliation of Klopp and co being somewhat overshadowed.

  7. 'A good TDD would see a striker and a left wing back arrive.'published at 11:18 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Brighton & Hove Albion

    Scott McCarthy, WeAreBrighton.com

Adam Lallana and Joel Veltman are two full internationals with over 50 caps between them and Brighton have signed them for a combined fee of £900,000. That's superb business for a club of the Albion's size.

On the downside, we have been crying out for a striker for four years. Aaron Connolly and Neal Maupay are our only forward options. An unfortunate injury and untimely suspension could see Graham Potter trying to find a way to play without a recognised striker.

Potter and the club have been desperate to downplay the striker issue, calling a new forward "a silver bullet", as if it is some mythical figure that supporters are mad to dream of signing. Kosovan forward Andi Zeqiri has arrived for £3.5 million, but it is asking a lot for a player who has scored most of his career goals in the Swiss second division to step up to the Premier League.

A good deadline day would see a striker and a left wing back arrive.

  8. Norwich's selling dilemmapublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

Norwich have come under criticism from some quarters for playing hardball when it comes to selling their young players.

Liverpool were knocked back for Jamal Lewis, who eventually went to Newcastle for an initial £15m.

And Max Aarons was denied a remarkable dream move to Barcelona, after the Spaniards offered a one-year loan move with no guarantee of buying at the end of it.

But Ben Godfrey's £25m switch to Everton shows Norwich won't stand in the way of one of their young prospects going on to bigger and better things - as long as the price is right.

Canaries fans send Godfrey off with their blessing, knowing he's developed as far as he probably can at Carrow Road and will hopefully progress even further under Carlo Ancelotti.

Godfrey has bags of talent and is a wonderful technical defender, but his positioning will be the main thing Everton coaches will need to work on.

  9. Balotelli to... Watford?published at 11:11 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

As rumours go this is a pretty good one.

Mario Balotelli – currently playing in Serie B in Italy for Brescia – is being linked with a move to Watford. Whether that’s just because the Watford owners' family also own Italian side Udinese and people are putting two and two together I don’t know. But it’s out there. And Watford do need a striker.

Troy Deeney is injured and being linked with a move away. Andre Gray is also injured. Danny Welbeck hasn’t been seen since relegation and Glenn Murray has hardly featured since joining.

New signing Stipe Perica has been suspended which meant 19-year-old forward Joao Pedro and winger Ismaila Sarr were the two strikers for the Hornets in their defeat by Reading on Saturday.

Is Mario the man for Watford? I’m not so sure. He’s also being linked to Turkish club Besiktas.

Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic is attracting interest from German side Werder Bremen and could be on the move.

The 24-year-old has spent the last two seasons on loan at Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin, making 31 appearances during the last campaign and scoring four goals.

The Reds would prefer a permanent move for the Serb, who has played two games - both in the EFL Cup - for them this season.

  11. PSG sign Porto's Pereirapublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    John Bennett
    BBC World Service Sport

Danilo Pereira will be really useful signing for PSG and they certainly needed to add to the squad. Towards the end of last week it became abundantly clear that head coach Thomas Tuchel and Sporting Director Leonardo were not seeing eye to eye on their transfer business (or lack of business) this summer.

On Thursday Tuchel told reporters “for the moment, we do not have the same quality (as before).” Remember, the likes of Thiago Silva, Edinson Cavani and Thomas Meunier all left on free transfers.

But on Friday, Leonardo hit back: “We did not like the declaration... If someone is not happy, we talk... but if he decides to stay, he must respect internal rules.”

So will Tuchel be happier now after Moise Kean's arrival yesterday and Pereira's move today? However he is feeling, his position at the club will definitely be on thin ice if they don’t deliver positive results in a tough Champions League group, starting later this month.

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

Chelsea and England striker Tammy Abraham has apologised for an apparent breach of Covid-19 guidelines after a surprise birthday party was organised for the 23-year-old on Saturday.

Abraham said: “On Saturday evening I arrived home to find a small surprise gathering had been organised for me with family and close friends to celebrate my birthday.

"Although I was totally unaware this was planned, I would like to wholeheartedly apologise for the naivety shown by all for the organisation and attending of this gathering.

"I recognise I have a responsibility both in my professional and personal life to honour and respect the guidelines and deeply regret that this took place. All I can do is learn from it, apologise to everyone and ensure it never happens again."

  14. Dortmund 'in contact with FA' over Sancho storypublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

There has been a report today in the Sun, external that three England players - Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho, Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham and Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell - apparently breached Covid-19 rules by attending a birthday party over the weekend.

Dortmund have released the following statement, concerning their player.

'We are in close contact with the English FA and representatives of the national team," said Dortmund.

"We are aware they are following Covid-19 protocols in line with Uefa. It would not be appropriate for us to add comment at this stage."

  16. Jorginho to Arsenal?published at 10:52 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    BBC Radio 5 live

I’m certainly expecting some players to leave Arsenal today. Matteo Guendouzi could be off to Hertha Berlin on loan. Lucas Torreira has been pictured after a medical in Madrid ahead of joining Atletico.

John Bennett told us that Houssem Aouar will be staying at Lyon earlier.

Yesterday, when I asked Mikel Arteta if they were bringing anyone in today and he revealed “we have had some news internally but nothing has been finalised and at the moment we can’t announce anything”.

So does that mean you are close Mikel?

“I don’t know what you are expecting but with some things we are closer than others.”

So are Arsenal going to move for Jorginho at Chelsea?

Neil Gregory: Can we just agree Everton have had the best transfer window hands down this summer - Rodriguez, Allan, Docoure, Nkounkou & Godfrey so far and all for reasonable fees. Expect maybe a loan or two today while trimming the squad as well

Rachel: Superb business from Spurs. Not only has Daniel Levy backed Jose Mourinho in the transfer market, but players who have been coasting for years have been served notice or shipped out with the minimum of fuss.

Jimmy Ottaway: Arsenal's deadline day business looks like it will consist of releasing Gunnersaurus and investing the £20m from Martinez into the Kroenke's holdings to increase his fortune. Imagine what we could achieve with an owner that cared about the club...
