Adam: Who is going to be this years ‘we’ll take anyone who can kick a ball straight’ signing? Maybe a late offer for Jermaine Defoe? Or see if Crouchy will dust off his boots?

I’m just at the Asda in Small Heath and a car with the number plate CR7 has just pulled up as someone ran in to grab a smart price piri piri chicken pasta salad. Is there about to be a shock loan move to St Andrew’s?

  2. Saints in need of creativity?published at 10:41 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Southampton

    Ben Stanfield, Total Saints Podcast:

While Saints looked strong going forward last season, it was clearly defensive areas that needed improving during this summer. With that in mind, Kyle Walker-Peters (Spurs) and Mohammed Salisu (Real Valladolid) were very welcome permanent additions.

Despite still trying to move on several signings that haven’t worked out at St. Mary’s, Ibrahima Diallo’s arrival will also create extra competition in central midfield.

With his services now secured, I’d give this window eight out of 10.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has made it clear he is still looking for at least one more player on deadline day and I think that will be in the attacking third of the pitch with either a winger attacking midfielder.

With circa £30m already invested this summer, and the ongoing uncertainty around the financial impact of Covid-19, there won’t be much left in the transfer coffers. Hopefully we can get an exciting, creative option across the line.

  5. Saints ins and outs?published at 10:29 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Adam Blackmore
    BBC Radio Solent sports editor

Southampton are keen on adding a wide player/midfielder to their squad, and former Saint Theo Walcott is one of their options, as a loan signing.

At least two other Premier League clubs have enquired about Walcott, but he is believed to be keen on a return to the south coast.

The arrival of Walcott would add experience to their youthful squad and depth to Saints wide options.

Southampton are hoping to let Wesley Hoedt, Sofiane Boufal and Guido Carrillo go out today, and that would help make financial room for any potential deal.

Goalkeeper Angus Gunn could also be set to leave Saints today.

  7. Godfrey a good deal?published at 10:23 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Everton

    Ben Godfrey

Ben Godfrey's £25m move to Everton from Norwich is money well spent, according to data analysts Carteret.

The London-based company advises some Premier League clubs on investment and transfer targets, and uses data from players' performances to work out how much a player is worth to an iindividual club.

They say Godfrey, 22, has an Intrinsic Value of £41.29m to Everton, so a big hike on their investment.

  8. 'It wasn't meant to be this way'published at 10:20 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Manchester United

    Barney Chilton, Red News:

So who would have thought Manchester United would be frantically acting like a Supermarket Sweep contestant on the final 24 hours of deadline day?

Well, any United fan well versed in the last seven years actually.

We were promised a cultural reboot, that was the long-term plan - and this seems anything but.

Yes, 2020 is unique, and surreal, but United talked of “exploiting” the market and we now seem like we’re being eaten by it. Edinson Cavani could thrill, I hope so, but it seems a reaction to events rather than what we wanted. And if we wanted Jadon Sancho all along, why has the window ended like this?

With United progress only ever seems temporary and what’s that quote about the act of insanity…? It won’t be a dull day for United fans, I’ll give you that.

But it wasn’t meant to be this way.

  9. Dembele deal 'unlikely'published at 10:17 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United have not completely abandoned their attempt to sign Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona but a deal is rated as unlikely.

United want Dembele on loan but it is thought the player would prefer a permanent move.

Dembele cost Barcelona up to £135.5m when he joined them from Borussia Dortmund three years ago.

However, injury and loss of form mean the 23-year-old has failed to make the impact expected at the Nou Camp.

Bumped into Ruel Fox at BP station in Diss on Norfolk/Suffolk border earlier. Reckons he's off to meet Stuart Webber to come out of retirement and inject some flair to the Norwich midfield. Not the worst idea, to be honest. Disclaimer: I did have a fair amount of cheese yesterday so this could just've been a vivid dream/premonition.

    Mr Hunt in Diss

Ah!...TDD... Best footy day off the year, now the 3rd round of the cup is spread over a light year.... let's get to the dodgy train station, airport sightings... tho it's somehow not the same without Harry rolling down his car window to slyly claim he's "got a few on the go..."

Andrew Neill: I know it won't happen but Newcastle could do with at least one more first team signing. Could argue that the priority is a ball winning midfielder or another left back but the difference in the team with and without Callum Wilson is huge so we need a back up striker

Freddie: Today is one of the biggest windows for Wolves that I remember, no real depth to the squad and no back-up for quite a few positions. Seems like extreme faith in the academy

Liverpool are not expected to make any signings today so eyes will be elsewhere on potential outgoings.

Xherdan Shaqiri was left out of the squad to face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup amid interest from other clubs, with Serie A pair Lazio and Roma believed to have noted his potential availability.

Harry Wilson, who played against Arsenal, has attracted interest from Burnley but as yet no deal has materialised.

Gumbo74: If Moyes & his team bring in more like Bowen, Soucek & Coufal (£5.4m!) then very happy. More importantly is a clear out of certain players not performing but taking a big wage. Oh,and we beat LCFC 3-0 yesterday - might get lost in the headlines!

  19. Busy day for Bayern?published at 09:45 British Summer Time 5 October 2020

    John Bennett
    BBC World Service

It seems ridiculous to say that treble winners Bayern Munich had weaknesses coming into this season but although the first 11 was never a problem, Hansi Flick did have issues when it came to squad depth in what will be a congested campaign.

The good news for Bayern fans and the bad news for their rivals is that the issues should all be sorted by the deadline.

Espanyol’s Marc Roca has already signed to add to the numbers in midfield. Marseille’s Bouna Sarr is expected to come in as back-up for Benjamin Pavard at right-back. Flick wants a fourth winger in the squad and Douglas Costa is being strongly linked with a deadline day move from Juventus.

Last but not least, there are reports that (brace yourself Stoke City fans) Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting could be signing for Bayern on a free to provide cover up front.

Can't say that it's true, never seen him having a kickabout in Staincliffe.
