Simon Atkins: Goals are meaningless when determining how a defender is playing, especially when they keep making mistakes. This goal changes nothing about how bad Maguire has been recently.

    Man City 1-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC Sports: "We created some big opportunities, maybe two or three, and we have to convert them if want to win matches like this.

"We didn't, but apart from that the belief I sense in this team made me very proud.

"I have seen a lot of teams come here in four years working here. So I know to do what we did tonight is really difficult.

"Overall I cannot be any prouder. If we have to lose football matches, I would prefer to lose matches like this. So I can take a lot of positives, but I hate losing."

On Rob Holding's injury in the warm-up: "Players have to be ready because this can happen in the warm-up, we know that, and I think David Luiz came in and had a really good performance.

Richard Lancaster: Classic Bruce. Man on form Fraser sat watching as man never on form Joelinton watches the game pass him by. Long 45 minutes ahead for us unless it's changed.

RuaWard: Unpopular opinion probably, but the fact remains, Man United have played their best football of 2019/20 & look a more solid team without Pogba in the side.

    HT: Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd

Manchester United have recovered very well from a nightmare start that heaped more pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. They would be ahead were it not for some last-ditch defending by Newcastle. This is the intensity that Solskjaer wanted to see.

Steve Bruce's men, who could go second with a win, need to find a way of relieving the pressure.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola tells BBC Sport: "It was difficult but we have won 1-0 and Ederson again was incredibly active like he was against Leeds. We are still little bit away from our best performance that we are wishing but for many reasons it is not possible. The victory helped us a lot, we defended really well deep and up front and a good three points against an impressive opponent.

"Arsenal has two or three more weeks preparation in pre-season which we did not have. Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo came back from injury, four players from Covid could not train, Ilkay Gundogan was 15 days off and is still far away and that is why we are a little bit away from where we want to be.

"Nathan Ake was incredible, Ruben Dias as well. The way Arsenal attack, we needed Kyle Walker's speed to control Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Nathan knows his job perfectly, he does not make mistakes and this happens because he is a nice guy. Nice guys always play good, that is my theory.

"We are so happy with Sergio Aguero, he was out for four months but is a guy who need rhythem, I am so happy for him he is back."

Samuel Luckhurst: Van de Beek's exclusion odd (again). Scored on #mufc debut and, without him, United wouldn't have won at Brighton - it was Van de Beek who won the corner from Rashford's overhit pass. He also scored for Holland in Italy

A loose pass is pounced on by Scott McTominay in the middle and he sends Dan James on his way. The Newcastle defence opens up, inviting James to shoot and he obliges but his effort lacks power and Karl Darlow gathers.

Martin McHugh: With Pogba out of the starting XI things look quite OK.

Luke Shaw surges through the middle and for a moment it looks like he is going to cut right through the Newcastle defence but he hands possession over to Marcus Rashford, who takes a touch before thumping an effort at goal that Karl Darlow can only push away before his defence clears.

Hard to see Newcastle holding out Manchester United before the end of the game if the pattern of play continues as it is.

To be criticised as much as Maguire has and the performance for England, to come out here and score shows such a strength of character. Nothing but respect for him.

Kris Jefferson: Yet again Bruce is terrified coming against a top 6 side (even if they’re playing really poor) and goes ultra defensive, hoping to get lucky. Teams have shown if you go after Man U and put them under pressure they’re not great, why aren’t we?

David Ljunggren: Newcastle look disappointingly sluggish. If Man Utd really knew what they were doing they would be ripping us apart.

Newcastle are still very much a threat, particularly through the lively Allan Saint-Maximin, who cuts in from the left before thumping an effot at goal that David de Gea keeps out at full stretch.

De Gea needs a bit of treatment after that after colliding with the post as he made the save. He'll be OK, though.

Another shot from Marcus Rashford but this time it is straight down Karl Darlow's throat.
