The hat-trick. It is football's most notable individual on-field achievement. A rarity honoured by the awarding of the match ball to those who manage it.

But such is the crazy, goal-packed nature of the 2020-21 season that even the remarkable feat of scoring three in a game is threatening to become routine.

Patrick Bamford's treble at Aston Villa on Friday was the sixth scored in the first 49 Premier League games of this campaign - the earliest such a tally has been reached in the competition's history.

In honour of this, BBC Sport takes a look back through the hat-tricks of the last 28-and-a-bit seasons of the English top flight.

Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka tells Sky Sports: "It was a big chance to go higher, we wanted to win but in the end we lost. Leicester had nothing other than their goal, we had some chances in the first half and it is difficult to take the words so close after the game.

"We did some mistakes, if you make mistakes and if you do at this level you get punished. Mistakes are part of football, we have to analyse it, look forward, take the next step on Thursday then got to Old Trafford to get something."

Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta tells Sky Sports: "I’m really disappointed, we had it in our hands in the first half and I don’t know how the hell the goal was disallowed.

"They caught us with space at the back and in that moment we lost the game.

"It is difficult to create spaces with 10 men behind the ball, but we should have finished the game better. When it comes to those moments you can’t give away chances at the back.

"We still had some moments after the goal but gaveaway too many free kicks. The effort that the boys put in, and the pressure the Leicester team put you under, it’s not an easy thing to do but we have to improve."

Leicester City

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers tells BBC Sports: "It feels good, it’s a long time is 47 years, we just wish supporters were here to enjoy it. A good team performance, we were defensively strong and we had a lot of quality.

"We always felt we wanted to bring Jamie into the game at 60 minutes, to stretch the game behind.

"Arsenal’s quality and that of any top side you have to stay in the game. I like to deny space, but this Arsenal team press it high then space opens up for them. As it went on it, worked out perfect for us.

"Our organisation could cope, Granit Xhaka coming to the side meant Dennis Praet could press him, but it was about closing the lines, concentrating and then playing through when we had the ball.

"It will be open, and it’s a good start but that it all it is. The learning from Villa was great, we didn’t deserve to lose that and we learned from it. You have to work hard at places like this and we deserved it."

Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta tells BBC Sport: "The game the way it went, I felt we had total control in the first half and restricted them to nothing. We were winning every ball, created a few chances and scored a goal I don't know how it got disallowed. They defended deeper in the second half, waiting for the mistake and in one moment they did it,

"Against this block, against so well organised teams, when you open them up you have to put the ball in the back of the net. They were similar against Manchester City, they scored with two set pieces and credit to them for what they have done but our players responded and I feel sorry for them.

"We have so many alternatives in the team and can have fluidity. It worked in some moments and there are options we can manage."

Leicester City

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers tells BBC Sport: "The boys were outstanding, our idea against top quality players and you have to deny them space. You set up slightly different for the game. They executed it really well.

"I just felt Kelechi Iheanacho's strength is he can hold the ball up but with Harvey Barnes he can stretch the game. He did not have quite as many opportunities but our plan was always to bring Jamie Vardy into the game and he can stretch it. The goal was a fantastic pass but he needs the movement and Cengiz Under's quality for Vardy was a brilliant move and a brilliant goal.

"That is why he is a big player, he makes the big contributions in the big games, that shows you the level he is at and he is a world class player. I am lucky to have him ere.

"We deserved it, we played against a really good side and have players who can run in behind. To keep a clean sheet and play with the quality and calmess was good."

Arsenal

Arsenal need to start getting the PEA shooting again...

Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has gone five league matches without a goal for the first time since November 2014, while playing for Borussia Dortmund.

Leicester City

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy tells Sky Sports: "We weathered the storm, we started getting into it, we played well and came away with a 1-0 win. Its big for us but its just the next game. We had a couple of bad results and just wanted to put it right.

"It was a good build up, James has seen me me free and he put it on a plate for me really.

"Luckily I made an impact and we take the three points home, it gives us a little boost, because the last two games were not good enough and now we can build on this."

Well, you have to say that potentially that was a tactical masterclass from Brendan Rodgers. We can criticise Leicester in the first half for how toothless and deep they were and Arsenal looked in control. Whether that was the plan to lure arsenal out we don't know but they've got that weapon of Jamie Vardy on the bench and it paid off. If that was the plan it was executed perfectly. Really, Leicester could've won 2-0 because they had another opportunity with Vardy. The way they did it and Rodgers introducing Vardy to the game at that point was perfect timing.

Arsenal are getting really frustrated - Mikel Arteta is pacing up and down his technical area. Arsenal just can't get a grip of this game. You'd expect them to be taking the game to Leicester but they're just frustrating them with the decisions they're making just to see this game out.

Should have been two and the points in the bag.

Jamie Vardy runs free on goal, in behind Shkodran Mustafi, but the Leicester striker pokes his effort at goal which comes off the head of goalkeeper Bernd Leno and away from goal.
