Calvert-Lewin's first real sight of goal - earned by his own tenacity in a challenge with a Newcastle defender - fails to bring the first goal. Having muscled his way in, the Everton striker is off balance and scuffs his effort.

Newcastle win their first corner as Miguel Almiron's persistence is rewarded.

It is chipped in and almost falls for Jamaal Lascelles but a combination of defenders prevents him getting a clear shot off. Olsen drops on the loose ball.

Allan has taken a knock to the ankle, but it looks like he will be OK to carry on. Last thing the Toffees need is another injury to a big player.

A little period of Everton pressure ends with Calvert-Lewin setting up Abdoulaye Doucoure in the box but, under pressure, he is only able to poke a harmless shot that Darlow gathers with ease.

Carlo Ancelotti is certainly not.

We know what Newcastle are about, they've played to their strengths. Everton have been poor, whether it's the balance of the side or something else.

Jamal Lewis nearly gets his side in bother with a short back-pass to Darlow. Calvert-Lewin charges after it but is denied a chance to shoot by the United keeper, rushing out to tackle.

The free-kick is pulled back to Jeff Hendrick on the edge of the box but his shot is blocked.

What a break that was, Saint-Maximin has got to score.

He's tried to dink it over the keeper. Fair play to Olsen, he's rushed out and made himself big.

Really good chance. The first of the game.

Newcastle break from the Everton corner and Callum Wilson sends through a lovely, defence-splitting ball that finds Allan Saint-Maximin. He has just Robin Olsen to beat but can't do so. It was a tame shot. He should have done better.

The danger isn't over, though, as a foul by Niels Nkounkou (for which he is booked) has given the home side a free-kick wide right...

Everton win the game's first corner. Gylfi Sigurdsson takes it but Darlow is able to get a hand to it to knock it clear.

Andre Gomes sums things up by passing the ball straight out of play.

Soon after, he gets himself in a good position to make amends, but a little touch by the head of Sean Longstaff prevents the ball reaching him for a volley he was clearly shaping up for.

Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl told BBC Sport:

"We played against a very strong side today, we never gave up. We had a fantastic first half. In the second, mentally it was difficult. You concede the first, then you look at the time and you stop playing. This is always dangerous.

"In the end I think it’s good we have this win, not a lot of teams will win here.

"The first two games at the start of the season were a disaster. But we showed a good reaction and now we play how we should. It’s good to see how the guys are developing. It’s a good message from the boys.

On goalscorer James Ward-Prowse who netted two free-kicks on his 26th birthday: "No birthday celebrations for James, we travel home in three team buses, we’ll have to be celebrating for him on the inside!"

An unfamiliar experience this for Jordan Pickford, watching a game from the stands. We've still yet to see what his replacement is like as Newcastle haven't tested him yet.

Jonjoe Kenny tries to get a cross over from the right but he is tackled by Miguel Almiron. Doesn't even win a corner either, with the ball deflecting back off him for a goal-kick. This riveting bit of action is the best we've had for a bit.

Jonathan: Playing Saint-Maximin in such an advanced role is wasting his ability to get hold of the ball and quickly move the team up the pitch. He's our main creative attacking outlet, but this formation isn't going to get the best out of him.

We've had one shot so far (from Newcastle's Callum Wilson). It was not on target.

Southampton

Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard: "We had a bad last 30 minutes, I don't know why we stopped playing. It's a bit disappointing, we were happy for the final whistle so it's a bitter-sweet win.

"It's not often that I score so I do like those but I still appreciate a good tackle or block.

"James Ward-Prowse scored an amazing free-kick, he's out there every day practicing those and we have great confidence in him every time we win a free-kick. He's given himself a great birthday."

Ancelotti must have the strongest jaw in football the way he chews his gum.

Not that you can fully judge by 20 minutes of football, but if you were to ask me what an Everton side without the class and creativity of James Rodriguez and the ability of Richarlison, this is what I'd suggest.

It's all very flat.
