Brighton manager Graham Potter speaking to BBC MOTD: “We pushed them and played our part in the game for long periods. That’s the positive but we’re disappointed with the result.

“You just never know these days. After seeing Tariq’s [Lamptey] penalty against Crystal Palace and ours with Leo [Leandro Trossard] you are not sure what is going to be given or not. It is up for them to decide, we just stand on the side

“We could have done better higher up the pitch (for Gareth Bale’s goal). We got a bit mixed up and that’s the challenge with these players who can punish you."

On leaving top scorer Neal Maupay out: "It was just a tactical decision. We went with Leo and Adam and we had Danny Welbeck and Andi Zeqiri as options."

Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm really happy. It's what I have been working my whole life for. I got my chance and just tried to do my best."

On decisions going against Brighton: "It's a bit disappointing.

"The penalty that was given against us and the penalty they should have given to us, we are not happy about. But it's football so anything can happen."

Tottenham forward Gareth Bale to MOTD: "It's a great feeling, you want to make a difference as a sub and it's nice to score again in a Tottenham shirt. You wish the fans were there.

"The manager said just try and make a diference. You have to be ready when you're on the bench.

"I haven't scored since January but it's only about five games! It sounds worse in months.

"It's great to get that scoring feeling back again, hopefully I can kick on from here. There are a lot of good teams around. we are not getting carried away. We have no doubt we have the quality to compete."

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho speaking to BBC MOTD: "I was not surprised because I knew they were a very good team, with a good coach capable of doing what they did. Graham Potter is a very good coach.

"They have lots of good players and they caused us some difficulties. I believe it is more fair to say the teams with less history and stature if you want to say, they are getting better and better.

"It was a great reaction after they equalised, we hit the post twice, score and after that it was a question of managing the game well, like we didn’t against West Ham."

On Brighton’s goal: “I have to try and stay away from this. I don’t know what to say at the moment. My opinion is that I miss my old football, but with goal-line technology because it is obvious that it helps the game."

On Gareth Bale and an inspired substitution: "The players are the ones not me. I know for a couple of weeks that I am telling you that Gary [Bale] is improving.

"I know he doesn't have 90 minutes in his legs and the good thing with him is he is very intelligent, experienced and he understands and we have dialogue to choose what is best for the team.

"In the Premier League today he came and scored a winning goal which is great feeling for the team, him and the fans. We keep fighting and we are in a good position in the table."

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "First of all it's three points. When teams with more power and history, one of the top six let's say, has a difficult match against the others it is always analysed as the top team not playing well.

"It is time to give credit to these guys. Not just to Brighton, the majority of the teams. They are getting better, they are very well coached, the difference in quality of players between the teams is not huge. The game is very difficult for us, we beat a good team and it was very difficult.

"They had periods when thery were better than us. The good thing for me is that when they equalised we had the reaction.

"Gareth Bale is very stable, very mature, he knows his body better than anyone, we know where we want to go and he's with us on that journey. He doesn't have 90 minutes of Premier League in his legs, the Europa League is helpimg him to get there. Today he came and scored, he is more dynamic than he was against West Ham, more agile.

"I prefer to stay away [from VAR]. Probably the referee should go to the press conference and explain. He had time to go to the screen so only he can explain why it is a goal. He is a good ref and a good guy, only he can explain that decision. My view doesn't matter.

"In 2004 when I came to England there were certain matches that the top teams knew was three points - not any more. Now this is the best league in the world, not just because of the top six, for every team. The Premier League, every one is close. If we drop two points we can be seventh, eighth ninth. The Premier League is beautiful."

Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey: "You never feel like you have done enough, it was nice to get a goal but the main thing was the team getting something and we didn’t. On another day we probably get something. They are a quality team and they took their chances but we had quite a few as well.

"It was a fantastic moment for me. When you are a wing-back and the opposite wing-back has the ball it is good to get on the back post. It was a great pass to find me and I slotted it away.

"There were fantastic performances from quite a lot of players today. We have had a tough run but hopefully we can start picking up some points."

Tottenham striker Harry Kane: "We said it was a great chance to go second in the league and put ourselves up there. We had to grind it out.

"I'm delighted for Gaz to come on and make an impact and that's what we need to win games. He's had a mini pre-season with us, it's about getting fit and sharp, we all know what he can do at the highest level.

"Every game he'll get stronger, we need every player to make an impact.

"We have let points slip and today could have been similar but we are learning - these games are the ones you need to grind out."

Brighton boss Graham Potter to Sky Sports: "We played well for big periods of the game and pushed Tottenham all the way. A lot of positives for us, you need the fine margins to go your way.

"The second goal was disappointing, we can do better and up until that point we were pushing and pushing. They can bring on Gareth Bale. They are as strong as anybody I have seen so far.

"It's nice for Tariq Lamptey, I'm sure he wanted to be on the winning team though. We are so happy with his effort and performance, he'll get better and better.

"He's got that ability to threaten the goal with assists, winning penalties or goals so it's nice for him.

"I'm confused by everything to be honest about our equaliser. When you watch it live it could have been a foul, he didn't see it, and I'm confused by our penalty shout as well to be honest. That's VAR for you."

Tottenham forward Gareth Bale speaking to Sky Sports: "It's a great feeling. You just want to come on and do a job for the team. I worked for the team and was lucky enough to get the goal.

"It was obviously great play from Sergio Reguilon and I was in the right place at the right time. It's nice to get off the mark.

"Everyone always talks about individuals but I've always said I’m a team player, I'd be happy coming on doing a job even if it's defending. The most important thing is the collective.

"We are growing every game. Even if we make mistakes we are learning from them and we can only use that as a positive. I haven’t played a lot of football. I had a little problem with my knee so it’s taking a bit of time. I am working hard in training and when I get chances."

On Tottenham competing for the title: "Very competitive, we know not to get too carried away. There are some great teams, we are just going to keep working as hard as we can."

Brighton deserved a draw but when you can bring on the talent of Giovani lo Celso and Gareth Bale they can be match-winners. Bale came on and showed his quality.
