Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Scotland manager Steve Clarke was keen to stress how all focus from now until April must turn to World Cup qualification.

"This is another step on the road to the World Cup in Qatar 2022," said Clarke.

"We're not getting carried away. We don't think we're anywhere near the finished article. We have to keep improving."

Victory for Scotland tonight could offer a back-up route to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

To guarantee World Cup qualification, you have to win your qualifying group. However, with Scotland in pot three of the draw, they can expect to be in a group with two strong sides. Put simply, it will be tough.

That's why topping Group B2 is so vital, as the two best Nations League group winners who don't go on to automatically qualify, or reach the play-offs via the normal route, will enter the play-offs anyway to make the numbers up from 10 to 12.

Those 12 teams will be drawn into three different play-off paths. There will then be two semi-finals and a final in each path, with the three winners making the World Cup.

Basically, as most of the teams above them will be likely to secure their place in the traditional way, Scotland are likely to be two games from the World Cup if they beat Israel on Wednesday.

    Sounds familiar, right?

  3. Promotion means bigger gamespublished at 18:48 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2020

Victory tonight for Scotland will guarantee top spot in Group B2 and earn promotion to League A for the next Nations League campaign.

That will mean bigger games against better opposition, such as France, Belgium or Spain.

That will not only give Scotland the chance to get used to playing better sides, but it could be a game-changer for the Scottish FA's finances at a time of need.

Big games mean big stars, which means - Covid permitting - full houses at Hampden again, something that has not been a regular occurrence in the past five years.

However, the reality is, tonight really does matter. We've done our best to explain why HERE, but let me break it down to you...
