Mark Bariball: Looking at the fixtures... Give Arteta time or let a new manager come in? with the first 3 games next year seeming like an opportunity for someone??

    Daniel Cheng: Well done Nico

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti will be furious with that. Well on top and in control then concede a very cheap penalty with that Tom Davies foul.

Arsenal, in contrast, will be very grateful. They are right back in it.

  3. YELLOW CARDpublished at 39 mins

    Everton 1-1 Arsenal

Great run! Dominic Calvert-Lewin gets the ball on halfway, turns and runs at Arsenal. They back off, he cuts inside one man, sidesteps Kieran Tierney and lines up a shot - well he would do if Tierney didn't mow him down.

Bad challenge that - and a booking. Everton free-kick in a good spot.

We're back to the game pattern pre the Everton opener now as the home side patiently pass around trying to work a gap in the Arsenal lines.

    Nicolas Pepe (Pen 35 mins)

Nicolas Pepe to take, plenty of steps and strides in his run up but a cool finish when it matters. Passed in, left-footed, Jordan Pickford dives out of the way.

  6. PENALTY to Arsenalpublished at 18:03 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2020

    Everton 1-0 Arsenal

Lifeline! Ainsley Maitland-Niles puts in a good ball, it's headed out by Yerry Mina back to AMN, as he comes on to the ball Tom Davies swipes at it to clear and ends up catching the England man.

    Clear penalty.

Alex Iwobi's ball in for the opener was a really fine delivery. Credit where it's due.

They're just boring to watch now aren't they, Arsenal? It's not for me anyway. Everton aren't exactly ripping ot up but at least they pose some threat when they have the ball. Richarlison and Alex Iwobi both take on and beat a man but can't produce the final ball.

Craig Smith: This could get messy for Arsenal. They look so disjointed. Going forward they look absolutely clueless (lowest goals in the league). It would be easy to blame Arteta but the truth is the players just aren’t good enough.

    Wenger in.

    Ryan from East Sussex.

No it's not D Day for Arteta. No available manager would get more out of these players in the long term than Arteta has. These things take time.

    Everton 1-0 Arsenal

As it stands Everton are up to second.

Arsenal have looked much better since the goal, first Bukayo Saka nearly gets away and then Dani Ceballos is munched on the edge of the area by Ben Godfrey, who takes man and ball in one swing.

Adam: Starting Willian and Pepe against a top side like Everton when you have a fit Martinelli & semi-in-form Lacazette is a sackable offence. Poor decision making from Arteta.

Arsenal don't have an identity or style anymore. It doesn't matter who the manager is there won't be any progress without that. Right now it's, 'Who are Arsenal'?

  12. CLOSE!published at 25 mins

    Everton 1-0 Arsenal

It looked like the Arsenal gameplan was just to sit off, frustrate and counter but they've carried absolutely no threat at all so far. Something's got to change.

And it does! A decent chance as Jordan Pickford comes for a ball he shouldn't, he's out of position and Eddie Nketiah slams a shot wide.

  13. Postpublished at 17:54 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2020

Arsenal have scored three own goals in the Premier League this season, only scoring more in 2002-03 (4) and 2011-12 (5) in a single season.

    Vintage crop.

  14. goal

GOAL - Everton 1-0 Arsenalpublished at 17:52 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2020

    Rob Holding (OG 22 mins)

That could end up as an own goal but that's not the important part - it's the opener for Everton!

Arsenal seem happy enough to let Everton shuttle the ball out wide, they've got plenty of bodies back to deal with it. Instead, Alex Iwobi's flat cross picks out the prolific Dominic Calvert-Lewin and his header goes in off Rob Holding.

It is indeed credited as an OG.

    Rob Elmore: D-Day for Arteta?

Problems are not going to be a fixed quickly. How many of the Arsenal starting XI would be anywhere near a prem dream team right now? Even if you only included players from clubs in the bottom half it's difficult to see many who would walk in.

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Goodison Park

Abdoulaye Doucoure has been a big success since his arrival at Everton from Watford and he has been the game's most influential player so far. Comfortable in possession and giving Everton's midfield legs and energy.

  18. CLOSE!published at 16 mins

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Worth a try! What an effort that is!

Michael Keane carries the ball forwards, Arsenal make no attempt to close him down so he winds up and cracks an effort from a good 35 yards. It's a screamer too, sailing goalwards and having Bernd Leno truly concerned until it skims the post and flies wide.

  19. Postpublished at 14 mins

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Gylfi Sigurdsson is taken out on the halfway line but Andre Marriner wisely lets play continue. Everton soon run into the massed Arsenal lines though and it's down to walking pace stuff. Sideways and back, looking for an opening.

Not the most thrilling watch so far.
