  1. 'The performance was not very good'published at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

West Brom boss Sam Allardyce tells BBC Sport: "Not very nice [to be back], All of what we expected in terms of looking after the situation we are in, trying to work our way, feel our way and it all went after one simple cross in four minutes. 15 minutes later we got a sending off and unfortunately for us that meant we had to play 10 men for that period. I can praise the players on the pitch for staying in the game, keeping their shape and trying to get one back. We slipped up with a couple of goals. The performance was not very good but at least the 10 men battled away, very disappointed in the sending off and the first goal.

"Jake Livermore, I have no problems with that (red card) but why did they not look at the Kortney Hause one on Grady Diangana? I saw a red at Sheffield United today and I am completely neutral, if he got sent off then Hause should too. At least Martin Atkinson should be asked to look at it by VAR. That is wrong. I don’t want to talk about VAR, I have enough problems with my own team.

"The games come thick and fast, we have Covid to deal with and we have not got much time on the training ground. The important thing for the players is to stay fit, not get sent off and stay clear of Covid. It would be me recommending to the board by January if we need to bring a player in. As time goes on, if the lads' performance get better, we would still look at players to come in if they are available and that is important for the players that are here.

"Players get very little time off, we are spending more time on recovery and they know what their responsibilities are. Keep them and their families safe, they know they can't do anything silly. The virus is spreading and I am worried about the second strain, what does that mean?

"An easy one next (Liverpool). We will give it our best shot, no-one expected them to battle against Manchester City and I did not see that, we need to find that."

  2. 'If we had a Jack Grealish, we would stay up'published at 21:37 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    West Brom 0-3 Aston Villa

    West Bromwich Albion

West Brom boss Sam Allardyce tells BT Sport: "I think that starting off and dreaming on the first goal was something I was not pleased about after four minutes and it is a simple cross, not a great cross and we are ball watching to go 1-0 down. We kept it tight and I was concerned whether we would keep our shape and we were trying, not that successfully, but the sending off has completely thrown it against us. That was the last thing we needed. If we are to go anywhere, this is the third red I believe, you cannot lose control, you cannot get people injured. The last thing we need to top it is to have people getting Covid.

"You don't need to make a tackle like that, Jake Livermore is an experienced player and he has decided for whatever reason to lunge at him. When the VAR has to look at it, you fear the worst, I have to agree with the decision. But the Kortney Hause tackle on Grady Diangana, why has VAR not asked the referee to look at the screen? We might have got the same decision. He jumped down his shin and down his ankle, I don't know whether that is inconsistency or not. I have been here one minute and already talking about VAR.

"There were a couple of errors, we miscleared the first one and he tucked it away and the second one is the only way to stop Jack Grealish. He is an outstanding individual, one Aston Villa will be delighted to have. If we had a Jack Grealish, with all due respect to my players, we would stay up.

"Anfield, an easy one next, then two days later Leeds. We just have to make sure we do not do what we did today ever again, switch off and get a player sent off.”

  4. Grealish was 'fantastic'published at 21:20 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    West Brom 0-3 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith: "A very good performance again, following on from Burnley and West Ham when we came away with nothing. To win three games away form home 3-0 shows we are in a good place.

"We started really well and expected that against a side with a new manager bounce. Our energy levels were there to see we controlled it form start to finish.

"You cannot lunge and Jake Livermore is frustrated he has been fouled and lunges in. He catches Jack Grealish on the calf and by the letter of the law it is a red. It was a bit of red mist, you cannot tackle like that.

"Jack was fantastic and he looks like he is playing on the playground with his mates. His balance is incredible, he is so hard to knock off the ball.

"There were times last season when the opposition went down to 10 men and we tried to force it but we were patient. We missed a number of chance to make it 2-0. The offside call for Ollie Watkins was very marginal. I don't think they has a shot on goal against us all game.

"Anwar El Ghazi's performance levels were good against Burnley and did well tonight and scored two goals."

  5. 'Staying up' the objectivepublished at 21:18 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Aston Villa forward Bertrand Traore: "We drew against Burnley, it was not good enough but we took positive things and created a lot of chances. Tonight we were clinical at the right end of the field.

"I was waiting for the first goal and happy to get that. The early assist gave me confidence and showed me how I have to go through the game.

"We need to stay focused on our own goal and object of staying up, then we want to do great things for the club and the fans."

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi: "Amazing night for me and Aston Villa, another derby we have won. I am proud and happy.

"Against Burnley we were unlucky and I was a bit upset and played a good game against them and should have scored two. I could have done something against West Brom and I did.

"We had space in the second half and it could have been faster but it is a good result.

"Before the red card it was easier and after they sat back, playing on the counter so it was harder.

"Bertrand Traore scored an amazing goal and we have learnt from last season. Aston Villa were afraid and shaky but we have to keep working hard and looking forward to what the season brings us."

It's going to be difficult for Sam but you can't judge off this game. He will need the backing of the hierarchy in January, but if anyone can do it, Sam can.

Villa can finish top 10, they have a good squad.

West Brom totally out of their depth in the Premier League. Allardyce not up to the modern game. Villa improved on last year but nowhere near the quality of Wolves. Nice to have three West Midlands clubs in the Prem but will be just two next season.
