Sheffield United's John Egan: "We are disappointed, the lads gave everything. We probably didn't show the quality we can which is part of the frustration.

"Last season is gone, it is in the past. We have lost a lot of games this year by one goal and if you can make comparisons we were winning those last year."

Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to BBC Sport: "We played really well, the tempo we have to play football is this tempo. A lot of passes and the ball goes to where you are. Imagine the ball will come.

"Raheem Sterling took a look, he didn't cross, he passed the ball and that's why we scored the first goal. Today was the best game of the season for players being in the position they have to be in.

"The way you play shows the results you will get in our team. Today was the day that we have done it best. Build from here, in 45 hours we have another game at Goodison Park.

"Tomorrow the players have to regenerate and prepare in one day. This pandemic puts us in an extreme situation, but that's how England likes it so we accept it."

Everton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti: "We were patient. We were in the game and stayed in the game most times, we defended pretty well and we found the right opportunity to score a goal.

"Every game is really difficult, complicated. Sheffield United are a good team, we are really pleased to be second. We didn't expect that at the start of the season but we are there and we want to stay there.

"The squad we have is good. We have a lot of important players out. With these players back we can still have a really good season, we don't have to think about the transfer window in January.

"We are there, we are pleased to be there but we don't have a lot of time to think about it. We have another game in two days, we push."

Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was the same as possibly a good dozen of the games we have played this season. It was a game of not many chances, we were playing a side bang in form but our lack of quality shone through.

"The same players that played with that momentum and belief from last year are not doing it this year. Nothing has really changed, the league hasn't changed, Everton haven't really changed but our team has in terms of the lack of quality we are showing this year.

"I can't go and play the game for them. One system against the other, we changed it a little bit but for me it is the same again, it is our lack of quality that let us down.

"There will not be the possibility of bringing many players in. We are looking to add one or two bits of quality. The players who are here are good enough to step up because they did it last year but they have to find that in themselves.

"Good experienced players who have played at this level for a season are not sticking their hand up and making my job easier.

"I'll pack it in if I ever feel I have to motivate a side in the Premier League. That shouldn't be my job but the players need to go and express themselves and play with a bit of belief."

Sheffield United

Sheffield United's Ben Osborn, speaking to BT Sport: "The lads are all motivated, we can't be any more motivated. We are embarrassed to be in this position, records we don't want, we just need that first result.

"The last few weeks' performances have been there, we are not lacking motivation we just need to roll our sleeves up and keep going."

Can Sheffield United stay up? "It is going to be really, really tough. We just need to get that first win first."

Everton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti, speaking to BBC Sport: "We defended well but also we didn't play so well with the ball but defensively we were strong and concentrated. These three points are very important for us.

"When I put on Andre Gomes I put Gylfi Sigurdsson a little bit back but he found the solution.

"We feel good also because we have problems at this moment with a lot of players out but this team has a lot of spirit and this is good. I am really pleased to manage these players.

"I am really pleased because I found the right club, a nice club a family club. I live in a nice area so after one year I can say I was lucky."

Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola: "A tough game, the weather conditions and the opponent who we have struggled to score against.

"That is the tempo we need to play. Today our positional game was perfect, unfortunately we could not score more goals but it is a good result and three more points.

"We cannot think much, the schedule is a game every three days. The players are committed and focused.

"We are far away from the top, last week we were 10th in the table, all the season is up and down. There are weird results for everyone, this season you have to be calm in the good and the bad moments."

Sheffield United

Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder, speaking to BT Sport: "It is obviously a difficult period for everyone at this football club. It is another game against a top side that has been close and we feel we should have got something out of.

"When we had the opportunity to open up and show a bit of quality we haven't done that. That has been the story of the season - not showing the quality we showed last season.

"Regarding motivation I will pack it in if I have to motivate the players, there is no issue with the motivation it is the quality, I can't put that quality into them. I can't play the game for them, I'm not chucking them under the bus but they need to show the quality.

"I'll scratch my head yet again, I'll try something to see if there's anything different. In the Premier League you have to produce to get any sort of result. If we showed any quality at the big times in and out of possession we would be nowhere near the points we are on but we are.

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce to BBC Sport: "It was a difficult night but the way they played, I've got no problems with it.

"Fabian Schar has trained once in five weeks but wanted to play, the attitude of them all was there to see. We have got a large chunk of players missing. I don't want to make excuses but we are struggling for numbers.

"We had to respond to heavy criticism and made a fist of it. We weren't good enough on the night but we tried to stay in the game and it was a huge improvement.

"Jonjo Shelvey had a groin injury and he is not right, he has played too many games. We will see if we can get a few back, once we do I'm sure we will be OK."

Here comes Pep Guardiola for his post-match chat. He was wearing a massive coat all night but still his hoody underneath is soaked around the arms and chest. He looks like a Neighbours character who has been for a morning run.

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce: "The attitude was pleasing after a difficult week or so, you always know you will come here against a world-class team and we were beaten by the better side.

"It was a decent performance. The game in midwek has gone, we needed to respond to the criticism and they have done as much as they could. They rolled their sleeves up and had a go.

"You accept mistakes, the one thing I wanted to see was a response from a poor display in midweek and they did that.

"We've had big problems which seems to have gone unnoticed and we need a fit and healthy squad back soon. It has been a struggle."

Manchester City's trip to Everton on Monday evening will be well worth watching.

City have got themselves into a position to challenge at the top but they need to push on.

After that they have Chelsea - and then Manchester United at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup semi-final.

Alejandro Cristobal: I cannot know if this has made a difference. However, the loss of Dean Henderson, to a relegated keeper might have affected Sheffield United

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan: "We moved the ball well, the weather was not the best and made it difficult to see! It was a solid performance and a good win.

"We could have scored more but most important was the three points. We should always share the responsibility to score goals, there are enough quality players in the team.

"In less than 48 hours we go again. I got a couple of kicks on my foot but I should be OK."

Everton

More from Sigurdsson, speaking to BBC Sport: "We were patient. It was a very tough game. They are a tough team, especially at home and it is tough to play against them.

"They could have scored one just before half time so I think whoever scored first in this game would have a very good chance to go on and win.

"It is fantastic, we've picked up after a dip in form so we would like to keep this going. Nice to be second in the league."

Everton

Everton matchwinner Gylfi Sigurdsson: "The gaffer moved me to defensive midfielder so I'm not sure what I was doing in the box for the goal!

"We needed to get three points, we knew it would be tough coming here. I think they have been quite unlucky this season, they have been in a lot of games where they have lost by the one goal so they are not a bad team.

"It is still early on, things change very quickly in this league. We had a fantastic start and then had a few games where we dropped off but we've picked back up now. Hopefully we can continue through January now."
