From nothing, Everton suddenly go close as a Dominic Calvert-Lewin is picked out by a superb ball from halfway by Michael Keane, the striker chests it to take it past one defender before smashing a volley wide of the post.

Ourhandsaretied: RE Kyle [20:16]: Aston Villa's squad is miles ahead of Newcastle's? Bruce is doing a good job with a very limited squad

Newcastle don't have the players to play the same formations as Villa against the bigger teams. That being said, Bruce is way too negative IMO

Alex Iwobi gets a shot in on goal - Everton's first of the game - but it is routine stuff for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

David: Newcastle have as much resilience as a piece of tissue paper. You just have to frown at the players and they fold. It’s going to be another very long and painful night for the Magpies

Lawro2011: Glad City got the early goal so I don't have to watch another Premier League weak side capitulate to an average City team again. Bruce has always surrendered to top 6 teams, what a waste of a tv game.

    Sheff Utd 0-0 Everton

Everton are yet to get going against Sheffield United. They've had some good wins recently but are looking a little leggy at the moment and haven't really troubled the Blades so far. This might be as good a chance as any for the hosts to get that much-needed win.

  11. CLOSE!published at 20:22 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2020

    Man City 1-0 Newcastle

Manchester City are working their way up through the gears now after getting that early opener and are almost permanently camped inside the Newcastle half.

It is almost 2-0 as Karl Darlow has to scramble to claw away a Kevin de Bruyne mis-hit cross that looked to be heading just under the bar.

  12. Postpublished at 20:18 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2020

    Sheff Utd 0-0 Everton

David McGoldrick is played through on goal and the Sheffield United forward rounds the goalkeeper but scuffs his shot and Ben Godfrey is able to get back and clear off the line.

It was all academic anyway because the flag goes up for offside against McGoldrick.

Kyle: The reason most Newcastle fans want Bruce out is his negative tactics. We play 5-4-1 at Manchester City yet a team like Aston Villa can play 4-3-3 and score 10 against Liverpool and Arsenal. Bruce's tactics are a joke. Boring to watch too.

  14. goal

GOAL - Man City 1-0 Newcastlepublished at 14 mins

    Ilkay Gundogan

    First shot, first goal!

Brilliant play by Raheem Sterling as he gets into the box on the right and his quick turn removes one sliding defender out of the equation before the forward patiently waits to assess his options and then plays a simple ball to Ilkay Gundogan, who hammers home from close range.

Alex Iwobi's deep cross is put behind by a Sheffield United defence not taking any chances. That presents Gylfi Sigurdsson with the chance to do something from the corner but his ball into the box is well claimed by Aaron Ramsdale.

Plenty of possession from Sheffield United so far but Everton are pressing high up the pitch, hoping to force a Blades defence low in confidence into a mistake.

Swanny: Going City 6-1 Newcastle Sheffield United 1-3 Everton

Jack: City rarely hammer teams these days, reckon a really dull 2-0 win, can see Everton dropping points too because they do that from time to time

I'm pleased with Bruce's selection tonight. We'll be tough for city to break down. I fancy a hard won point for the toon tonight.

I was at Wembley in 2007 when then England manager Steve McClaren stood on the touchline with an umbrella for company as his side missed out on qualification for Euro 2008.

I am pleased so see Pep Guardiola and Steve Bruce have decided not to follow suit - it is a lousy night mind you.
