  2. 'A battling point'published at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2020

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith, speaking to MOTD: “It’s a battling point for us. They got beat in the last game so I certainly understand that. In my head, I was thinking whether to go with fresh legs or with momentum and confidence.

“I looked the players in the eye and they looked ready to start the game. You’ve got to find a balance between defending and attacking and I thought we did that really well.

“It’s only our second season back in the Premier League. You have to build gradually. We had 13 new players last season but only five this year. They've settled in quickly.

“We’ve got some tough games coming up. Every game is tough, but momentum and confidence is a big thing.”

On Anwar El Ghazi: “He had an up-and-down season last season. We started this season really well with Jack on one side and Trezeguet on the other. Him and Bertrand have seized their chance. Anwar’s come in and scored five goals in five games, you can’t argue with that.”

  3. Chelsea's next opponents face Covid postponementspublished at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2020

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa

    Chelsea

Chelsea are set to host Manchester City in their next Premier League on Sunday, followed by another home game against Morecambe in the FA Cup on 10 January.

But City's game at Everton tonight was postponed because of a Covid outbreak in the camp, while League Two side Morecambe have also had two games called off.

Blues boss Frank Lampard says he was made aware of the news about the City game before his side's match and will discuss the matter in the coming days.

On the prospect of not playing for a couple of weeks, he says: "We will have to cross that bridge if it comes. Covid is strange times for all of us. We all sense this month is going to be a tough period for all of us with the surge. Football will be secondary."

  4. 'This is our tough period'published at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2020

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, speaking to MOTD: “They're a tough opponent, but we had really good chances.

“I think there was a handball before the goal right next to the linesman. When you’re having a tough moment like we are, sometimes that goes against you. That last bit wasn’t quite there today because we haven’t got the rub of the green at the minute.

“The response was exactly right other than the win. We had a couple of little chances. It felt like the pressure was coming from us. This is our tough period at the moment. We have to fight for it and we’ll be stronger for it.

“You want to get results at this point of the year. I could feel the players' disappointment at the end because they want to win.

“A few weeks ago people were talking about us as title challengers, now it's a difficult period. The new players are going to get better as they come along.”

Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Whether we like it or not, this is a totally different season for Frank Lampard. The pressure is on, he has spent the big money. You look at the changes that Frank made tonight and then you look at the changes Dean Smith made.

What that tells us is that Frank has such a strong squad, with the players that came into the side, a really strong squad. But at this moment in time, they are a crisis club because they are under-performing.

With the nature of this season and how tight it is, a couple of dodgy results and Chelsea are the latest team that needed to bounce back.

They didn't do so and now the pressure will build. I think things are a little bit flat at this moment in time but I can't put my finger on it.

  6. 'A month ago we win that' - Lampardpublished at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2020

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, speaking to Amazon Prime, on whether he thought his side gave a positive reaction from the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal: "Definitely, in terms of performance. We started really well, Villa had their moments but we dealt with them and came through the first half really strong. We got a goal we deserved.

"Second half, we conceded with a man on the floor, that's the way it is for us at the moment. We pushed but couldn't break the deadlock. Attitude-wise, effort-wise, some of the play was very good against a really good team.

"Late on we got some chances and nearly scored, when you're in a tough moment sometimes things don't quite go for you. A month ago we win that. We have to fight through it.

"I can't ask for more from the players today. No-one let me down, everyone worked hard, we didn't get the rub of the green."

  7. 'A much better performance'published at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2020

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa

    Chelsea

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell: “[The manager] is more pleased than he was the other day. It’s a draw at home. We want to be winning these games, but the effort and performance was a lot better today. The mentality is the main thing, and that was a lot better.

“They had one chance and they scored from it. We're disappointed not to have won, but it was a much better performance so soon after a disappointing one.

“At Chelsea you want the full-backs to be joining in. I do like to get forward. The priority is obviously defending, but when I do get forward I try and do what I can.

“At the moment we’re not quite getting the rub of the green, but we’ll keep working hard. We’ve got a very strong squad. We’ve got two or three players in every position who are up to the standard. It’s what you want at a top club.”

  8. 'Smith deserves a lot of credit'published at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2020

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa

    Micah Richards
Former Man City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Dean Smith deserves a lot of credit for what he has done at Aston Villa, from relegation to the way they are playing now. Some of the best training sessions I have ever seen have involved Dean Smith.

I didn't know whether he was going to be a good coach because when you come to the Premier League, it can eat you alive but because he is a Villa fan, he got his chance at Villa, he's thrown everything at it and I'm not surprised that he's doing this well.

  9. 'Some tired legs out there'published at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2020

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

More from Villa boss Dean Smith on earning a point at Stamford Bridge: "We started the first half really well, thought we controlled it, then they started switching it easily to the left flank and Bertrand Traore was getting dragged in.

"We changed that at half-time and looked better for it.

"There were some tired legs out there towards the end so we just hoped there wouldn't be a mistake that was costly."

Villa a good side don’t forget they put 7 past Liverpool.. the only good thing is no one (yet) is gaining a huge advantage points wise.

Gritty, tenacious performance from Villa, especially given the lack of available rotation in the squad - a completely different proposition this season.

Villa boss Dean Smith on the form of Scottish midfielder John McGinn: "He is a wonderful character in the dressing room, he had a serious injury last year - the fractured ankle at Southampton in December - and didn't come back until June. In Project Restart he was playing catch up and now he is back to his best.

"He's an old fashioned midfielder, he's box to box, he sticks his backside in, loves a tackle and on top of that he is a wonderful character."

  14. 'Longer you are in the PL, the more depth you get'published at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2020

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

More from Villa boss Smith on how his side have adapted in their second season: "We all know how tough it is in the Premier League. When we got promoted we had to bring in 13 new players and it takes time for them to bed in straight away.

"We managed to retain our status the following season, then you have to be choosy who you pick and we could only bring in five players.

"But you have to be here three or four seasons to have the depth a lot of clubs have, the longer you're in it the more depth you can have."

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn: “It was a very even game. Chelsea are a good side. Not many teams come here and get a result. Especially after the last couple of days it’s a good result.

“We’ve shown great character this season. We’ve coupled that with ability and determination, everyone’s grafting until the last second and fighting for every ball.

“Last season we might have come away with a defeat, but we stuck at it and got the point.

“During this tough year I think us as footballers have been very fortunate doing what we love. Maybe it’s a bit unfortunate without supporters, but there are plenty of people unable to go about their daily routine.”

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith on Amazon Prime: "It's tough turning it around but I trust the players. I asked every one of them if they were ready to go again and they looked me in the eye and said they were.

"It's a big thing to have that trust and they have gone and proved that today.

  20. The best of the statspublished at 19:33 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2020

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa

Chelsea have lost just one of their last 14 Premier League home games (W10 D3), with that lone defeat coming against Liverpool earlier this season.

Since losing at Liverpool in July, Aston Villa have only suffered one defeat in their last nine away games in the Premier League (W5 D3).

Villa have shipped 51 Premier League goals away at Chelsea – only versus Man City and Man Utd (both 53) have they conceded more on the road in the competition.

They haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 20 Premier League away games against Chelsea since a 1-0 win in March 1998.
