Liverpool are leaders and Manchester United are second in the Premier League table at the turn of the year for the second time, after 1996/97.

The Reds had a five-point advantage (played one match more), but went on to finish fourth, seven points behind the Red Devils (champions).

West Brom boss Sam Allardyce says football needs a break after the Premier League returned a worrying number of positive coronavirus tests.

On Tuesday the latest round of Premier League coronavirus testing found 18 people had the virus - the highest recorded in the testing programme.

Fulham's match at Tottenham on Wednesday is in doubt because of new coronavirus cases at the Cottagers.

"I'm very concerned for myself and football in general," added Allardyce.

Sheffield United have confirmed they had "numerous positive tests" in the latest round of testing.

On Monday, Manchester City's Premier League match at Everton was postponed four hours before kick-off at Goodison Park because of an outbreak of coronavirus at the club.

Wolves

Wolves skipper Conor Coady: "We felt like we deserved better. When you get to late in the game you don't think you'd lose. We're gutted to concede like we have.

"Everyone delivered. We're a team learning and growing, trying to find new ways of playing. We want to be learning but pick up points so we wanted to win. Can't say much, absolutely gutted.

"Young players are still learning and I'm still learning. We win together and lose together.

"I thought we dealt with the long ball so it was a massive sucker punch. We left everything out there.

"We were organised until the last moment. Hard work and organisation until the last moment."

Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: “It was a point we brought up early in the season in a meeting. We didn’t win many points towards the end of game and we have a tradition for it at this club.

"That has happened so many times at that end and now we have won quite a few points towards the end of games and that is both a mental and physical aspect.

“We’ve got a group now that is more robust both mentally and physically. We have gone through some tough training periods, played loads of games and they are getting fitter and fitter. The fitter you are the more you can do. But mentally as well it gives you a boost knowing you can win games towards the end.

“We just focus on the next game. I am very boring but we cannot get too far ahead of ourselves. We have got to a decent position at the moment but the season hasn’t even reached halfway.

“We didn’t perform as well as we want to but we won a game against a very difficult side to play against.

"It’s the first win in the league for me against them. There have never been many goals in the games but for me this is a big step forward, that you don’t play well but you win.”

Josh Slater: If Man Utd beat villa on Friday then their next league game is interesting. Liverpool away. Liverpool have two tricky away games, Newcastle who will be organised and disciplined and Southampton are a good team. Idk why but can see them dropping points in one of them.

Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on winning in 'Fergie time': "It's a point we brought up earlier in the season - we have to win more points later in games.

"Now I feel the players are mentally and physically more robust to be able to do it."

On having to grind for the win: "A reason behind we're not at our best was because we were playing against a good side. Maybe they tired more than us towards the end. Maybe the extra day's recovery helped us."

On 2020: "The year has been positive in terms of results. It's a group that are now physically and mentally ready to go up the table."

On the win: "Bit lucky, bit flukey, but that's what happens when you put teams under pressure."

Danny Partington: Absolutely no sympathy for Wolves whatsoever. Played for a draw and ultimately got what they deserved! Utd only team that looked like they wanted to play and score!

Ben: Wolves beat Chelsea in the 96th minute, and United, now second in the table, beat Wolves in the 94th minute. There's so much more to this season than the table shows.

Wolves

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo speaking to Amazon Prime: "This is football and a learning process. It's cruel in the moment but you can't stay feeling sorry. You have to move forward

"We created chances. Sometimes we should finish more."

On possible new strikers in the January window: "We speak every day (to the board). We have to sit down and plan."

Manchester United

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford: "It’s the deciding goal. Probably not the most beautiful but we will take what we can get and take the three points and move on.

"Today was tough but we expected a tough game but managed to get over the line.

"The full-back had cramp a few minutes before so I just had it in my head I wanted to go at him and make him chop and turn and just see if I could make something happen and thankfully in the end we got a deflection.

"It means a lot. We were a little disappointed that we didn’t play as well as we wanted to or could have but it is three points and no matter how scrappy it was we will take it.

"For us, we can’t look too far ahead. We are a team that is still doing a lot of work on ourselves. We have to take it one game at a time but if we can keep finding ways to win like this we will see where we are at the end of the season."

Lamide: Title winning stuff there... Winning when not at our best! The Red Devil's are back.

Jack: Boom! Thank you Rashford. One of the most dire games of football all season though. Was Wolves formation 9-1? As a defender myself I can see why teams do it, but it’s boring to watch. Maybe scrap points for draws...!

Big shouts from the Manchester United bench as that full-time whistle went! A huge three points for United but it was hard on Wolves - not just the manner of the goal which took a huge deflection.

Overall, the balance of play was fairly even. Wolves had some big chances but United came more into in the last 10 minutes and that pressing and urgency paid off.

Manchester United are now unbeaten in nine games and just two points off leaders Liverpool now.

They've crept up the table...

Aleksander: Just when I tweeted about Manchester United choking and ending up on two draws feeling like two defeats they score!! Should have tweeted that 10 minutes earlier but Fergie Time winner works too.

Michael Reid: Typical. Saiss has been immense all game, such a cruel deflection. Anywaaaaay... yaaaaaas! At least the title race is a bit more open than last Christmas time!
