  2. 'Sometimes you learn on your feet'

    Everton 1-0 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard: "It was tough, it was a tough night for both teams, the difference was they got the early goal and stopped up playing after that.

"After that we found it too hard to break them down. We didn't play well."

On Mendy after he conceded the penalty shortly after getting injured: "I don't know he got caught in the middle a little bit. He has been incredible since he has ben here, I just think it was one of those.

"It was absolutely the game we expected and I expected. I expected the style of the game, the unity, the fans back in the ground.

"We are a young squad, new players that haven't won leagues. Sometimes you learn on your feet and tonight was one of those games.

"I am not going to criticise, when you have an off night you rely on other things like keep a clean sheet and then Mason's free kick goes in off the post, not the other way round."

  3. 'We lost the game in the first 30 minutes'

    Chelsea

Chelsea full-back Ben Chilwell: "It was in the first 30 minutes of the game we lost the game. We knew we had to come out sharp and match their physicality but we didn't do that.

"Me and Reece struggled to get into the game, their runners were good at tracking us, the fans were behind them and the longer the game went on we knew it was going to be difficult to score.

"We try not to listen to any of that [title contenders]. We have a young squad, we are still a relatively new group. The reality is we won't win every match and now it is how we react to it."

  4. 'Performance and spirit really good'

    Everton 1-0 Chelsea

    Everton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti tells BBC Sport: "Really satisfied. For the first time we had the supporters in the stadium and we were pleased for this. The performance, spirit was really good. We defended really well and then we used our ability on the counter-attack and in the end we deserved the win.

"We look for the clean sheets, we had only a clean sheet in the first game against Tottenham. It is quite strange, Tottenham have fantastic strikers, Chelsea too. That means concentration is important when you want to reach a clean sheet.

"We had some problems, we were not able to reach the levels of the earlier games. We lost our belief a little bit but after the game against Manchester United the performance was better.

"Gylfi Sigurdsson is very good on the penalties, he is cold and our penalty taker. There was a misunderstanding in the second half and his performance apart from the penalty was top.

"Frank Lampard was good player and a fantastic manager, he is doing a fantastic job. He is young but he is doing really well. Chelsea are playing really good football."

  5. 'We did not pass the test'

    Everton 1-0 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard: "Not our best performance. First 20 minutes were key for me, I knew it was coming, longer balls and second balls for a team needing a win. When you go 1-0 down, it absolutely suits their gameplan. We hit the post twice but for our levels and what we have been recently, not good enough.

"I would not say energy or desire wasn't there, we were just off it. The lads are gutted because we were on a good run. If they are going to make it difficult for you, don't concede from a long ball, second ball situation. We have been getting down the sides, the quality of crosses has been good and it wasn't today. Credit to Everton.

"I don't think Eduoard Mendy was just culpable but he has been outstanding so far so I will take that. When teams play long with one of the best strikers in the league, you have to suffer the moments and get through. Disappointed we did not have enough to unlock the door.

"It is a long season and these people talking abut us winning the league best squad, it is ridiculous. You have to look at the teams winning it last three or fours years, they have wingers, strikers scoring 30, 40 goals and league, Champions League winners. Coming here to this place, they were up for a result and we did not past he test. We will in the future."

  6. 'We deserved to win'

    Everton 1-0 Chelsea

    Everton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti: "I am really pleased in front of our supporters. We are really happy for them, they have seen a good match from Everton. We played well with fantastic spirit. The fans supported us and it is really important to have their support, it is a totally different environment.

"Defensively we did really well. The team sacrificed, that was the target because against the tough teams like Chelsea you have to sacrifice. We were dangerous on the counter and we didn't concede many opportunities. We deserved to win."

On the penalty: "Unusual because Gylfi is the shooter, he wanted to give the chance to another one but I have to decide, not them.

"It is our target to compete, it is really difficult to compete with Chelsea. We beat them but we are not at the same level."

  8. 'We have to play like this every week'

    Everton 1-0 Chelsea

    Everton

More from Sigurdsson: "Fantastic result. Defensively I thought it was a really good performance. A clean sheet was nice but overall very happy with the performance tonight.

"Delighted to see it hit the back of the net and even more so when it is the winning goal.

"Of course, if you ask any player who is not playing they want to play and that is the way it should be. I was happy to get a start tonight.

"We have to play like this every week. The commitment we showed is what we need. We bounced back tonight and hopefully we can continue."

  9. 'We needed to get back to winning ways'

    Everton 1-0 Chelsea

    Everton

Everton match-winner Gylfi Sigurdsson: "It was a tough one, not going to lie but we had to defend until the last second. A very important three points for us.

"Against a team like Chesea, they are good going forward and move the ball really well. We have done some work on our defensive shape during the week and it worked.

"Strikers all want to take the penalties, not ideal but it is one of those things. It is a good thing a lot people want to step up.

"It is nice to see it go into the back of the net and even better when it is the winning goal.

"We have got a few players playing out of position. Clean sheet and I thought we were quite comfortable. They had a lot of possession but the shape worked perfectly. We rode our luck with a couple of shots hitting the post.

"We need to get back to winning ways and how we were playing in the first four or five games. Lots of spirit, confidence and goals.

"You almost forgot what it was like playing in front of fans. You get the goosebumps and it was fantastic."
