    Newcastle United

Matt Ritchie has been talking about how Newcastle's players have been training at home after the Covid outbreak at the club, while the Longstaff brothers - Matty and Sean - have been kicking a ball about in a local park to keep fit. In addition, one unnamed member of the squad got told off for riding his bicycle in a bike-free area of the city.

  2. 'We have to find solutions'published at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2020

    FT: Wolves 0-1 Aston Villa

    Wolves

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo: "It is always disappointing to lose. We played good. I didn't see the images (for the penalty). The referee judged and the VAR saw it. We keep on going. In the first half it was an intense game and both teams were tight. In the second we controlled the game and had clear chances. We try to keep on growing on these aspects and be more clinical. Too many fouls in the first half. It did not flow. In the second it was better.

On Fabio Silva: "He worked well. He was linking with team-mates and had good chances. He worked hard. The idea to make a player grow is to help him and give him competition."

On scoring goals without Raul Jimenez: "It is something we have to do as a team - fine solutions."

    West Bromwich Albion

One West Brom fan started a 'thread' on Twitter this week about every refereeing decision in favour of the Baggies this season.

The 'thread' consisted of just one tweet. It's fair to say Slaven Bilic's side have been on the receiving end of some controversial decisions since returning to the Premier League.

Last week at home to Crystal Palace it seemed unclear, even after multiple replays, whether Matheus Pereira intended his boot to make contact with Patrick van Aanholt's midriff while on the ground.

Referee Paul Tierney had no doubt after viewing the incident on the pitch-side monitor and sent Pereira off. West Brom lost 5-1.

Does this game really deserve 1 11 yellow and 1 red card ? Sorry, but Mike Dean needs to have a long look at his performance

Traore goes down in the Aston Villa penalty area following a challenge by Grealish who gestures at him to get up. Oh the irony!

  6. 'I did not feel penalty pressure'published at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2020

    FT: Wolves 0-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Vila match-winner Anwar El Ghazi: "Absolutely amazing, we worked hard in this match, we had a week off and prepared very well in training, everyone was on it. We deserved it because we showed mentality that we did not have last season and we have got it this season. We are all happy now.

"It is amazing, I try to do everything I can, if I can replay the hard work I am pleased to help the team and club.

"I practice penalties a lot, even if I am not playing. If you practice a lot, it is something you get used to. I did not feel a lot of pressure to be honest.

"I appreciate Jack Grealish gave it to me, but he knows my capabilities, it shows he is a really good guy to give it to me.

"We know Wolves are a very good team, tactically very strong, have very good players and we knew it was going to be a tough game,

"We started very well this season and I am looking forward to seeing what the season brings us, we are ready.

"Emiliano Martinez was unbelievable, even in training it is so hard to score against him. He showed his quality today."

Former Newcastle striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think the Newcastle training ground opened up for the first time since the outbreak on Wednesday. It was a matter of who could they get in? Who is going to be fit? Who is still suffering with the virus? Some players and members of staff still are.

"But it's also refreshing to hear Matt Ritchie and the manager say 'we want the game on and we've got to go ahead with the players we have got'.

"It's refreshing because they're not making any excuses. I'm pleased to hear the manager and the players say they ae desperate to get the game on no matter what team they can put out."

OHAT2020: "Referee Mike Dean had an absolute stinker." Were we watching the same game? All major decisions correct. Both reds correct. All yellows I can remember correct. The penalty decision correct

James Beswick: I get the Mike Dean show - he clearly doesn't mind the spotlight. But I think it's a bit unfair to suggest he would compromise his integrity as a referee just for the sake of making a show - he just would not get away with it. Refs get enough abuse from fans.

  9. 'They couldn't walk to the end of the street'published at 14:33 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2020

Newcastle v West Brom (15:00 GMT)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, on what he has had to deal with since his side last played: "It's been very difficult because we weren't at the training ground for something like 10 days.

"We've had one or two players in particular who have had side-effects.

"They couldn't walk to the end of the street before being fatigued.

"It's been difficult but we have done everything we possibly can to get the game on. Let's get on with it and focus on what is a great opportunity to try and get three points."

Cracking stuff Phil. Late drama at Elland Road last night. Late drama at Molineux. Will we get goals at St James' Park? Both Newcastle and West Brom have struggled for them this season but the good news is the two Callums are starting - Wilson and Robinson - and they do know how to find the net.

It's been a rough old few days for the Magpies after a Covid outbreak in the squad.

Dave Payn: Isn't Mike Dean past the referees' retirement age already? I reckon he'd have been more than aware of his impending 3000th card and seems to have decided to 'have a party.' I'm not a fan of either team but Dean has spoiled this.

And that is that. Villa snatch it at the end through a late penalty.

Wolves had the best of the chances over the 90 minutes. Referee Mike Dean had an absolute stinker.

    Wolves 0-1 Aston Villa

Villa eat up a few seconds by taking of Ramsey and sending on Marvelous Nakamba.

  15. RED CARDpublished at 90+5 mins

    Wolves 0-1 Aston Villa

Not to be overshadowed, Mike Dean sends another man off. Joao Moutinho fouls Jacob Ramsey and gets another booking. I don't think he even touched him. Well done, Mike. Take a bow.

  16. goal

GOAL - Wolves 0-1 Aston Villapublished at 90+4 mins

    Anwar El Ghazi

    Surely the winning goal!

Ollie Watkins is relieved of penalty duties, with substitite Anwar El Ghazi taking over and making no mistake with a well-taken spot-kick that has Rui Patricio going the wrong way.

  17. PENALTY TO VILLApublished at 90+2 mins

    Wolves 0-0 Aston Villa

Huge chance for the 10 men to win it!

It's a clear pen. Semedo drags down McGinn after the Villa man beats him on the left side of the box.

  18. Postpublished at 90+1 mins

Podence thinks he should have a foul from a coming together with Mings, who also goes down. Mike Dean gives it the way of Villa. Amazingly there is no card.

  19. Postpublished at 90 mins

    Wolves 0-0 Aston Villa

Good defending from Semedo. Grealish is lurking behind him, waiting for a cross, but the Wolves man steers the ball behind and away from immediate danger with his head. The corner is poor from Villa.

  20. YELLOW CARDpublished at 89 mins

    Wolves 0-0 Aston Villa

I don't get this many Christmas cards. Grealish goes in late on Podence and receives a yellow.

Ten yellows, one red. Has it even been that dirty a game? I don't think so.
