Neto weaves his way into a crossing opportunity and sets up Dendocker for a volley from 12 yards. He hits it well enough but too close to Martinez, who dives and parries. Should have scored.

As in the first half, the game has threatened at times to offer something exciting, but every time it has quickly retreated back into its shell.

Fabio Silva couldn't come much closer to a first Premier League goal without actually notching it. Podence carries the ball and sets up the striker for a first-time shot that beats Martinez but comes back off the inside of the post.

Newcastle, who have been hit recently by an outbreak of Covid, are missing only two players from the side that beat Crystal Palace a couple of weeks ago. Javier Manquillo and Federico Fernandez are the two absentees for the visit of West Brom.

Jack Grealish tries to catch out Rui Patricio with a free-kick, shooting at the near top corner instead of crossing as he had intimated he would. His radar is off, though, and the all flicks the top of the net as it passes over.

Soon after, Rui Patricio pushes a Watkins shot wide with his left hand. The resulting corner comes to nothing.

Good effort from Pedro Neto. He travels infield with the ball, jinking past a couple of Villa players, before unleashing a shot that flies past the diving Martinez but also the far post.

Adama Traore is a bit greedy. He beats his marker and is away. He has team-mates for company but goes for a low shot that is easily saved by Martinez.

Villa enjoying a good little spell now. Douglas Luiz is set up on the edge of the box by Grealish but he drags his shot just wide of the post.

Matty Cash should really have made more of loads of space down the right. He receives a pass and is able to drive into as much room as he needs to weight up his options and pick out a team-mate in the box. He fails to do so.

Oh, Ollie Watkins is close to getting what might have been a goalscoring header. He rises high 10 yards out and looks to make contact with a cross from the left but can't quite arch his neck to make contact.
