The way Newcastle stuck at it, West Brom came back at them and the changes Steve Bruce made made them stronger. Because of what's gone on, not being able to train and not getting into the training ground for ten days and only starting to train again on Wednesday. When you put all that into the pot that's a brilliant three points.

Newcastle United

Newcastle goalscorer Dwight Gayle to Sky Sports: "It's been a long time. It's been a difficult few months.

"We've got seven games in 21 days. I'm sure I'll get minutes here and there.

"Murph has great delivery. It was a nice announcement back. It shows if you put a good enough ball in it's impossible for a defender. The guy at the near post couldn't defend as he'd risk putting it in his own net.

"We know what we have got in the dressing room. We always stick together.

"We knew what West Brom would bring to the table. They're a very good footballing side. It was important for us to keep our shape. We looked good when we went forward."

Yes, West Brom had an horrendous start, but in the first half they stayed on the ball and there was a reaction in the second half. There are ways of losing a game. Today, you would accept that. You wonder if the defeat and capitulation at Palace will be the one that would get Bilic the sack?

West Brom boss Slaven Bilic to MOTD: "The first goal was a very cheap goal to concede. In the first half they were better and stronger. I made some changes and in the second half we were really good. After we scored it was an open game. The winning goal was a great finish but we have to do better.

"I feel disappointed because of the result. Very few games this season the opponent has been much better than us. It's frustrating that we are again going back home without a positive result."

West Bromwich Albion

West Brom boss Slaven Bilic to Sky Sports: "It's hard to take. It was a game of two halves. They scored very early but for the whole first half - apart from the last few minutes - they were stronger, better on second balls, kept the ball better. We were not good.

"Second half was totally different. It was an open game. We had situations where with a bit of luck or better finishing we could have nicked all three points.

"Then we conceded a very simple goal when we changed the shape to stop the crosses. You expect them [defenders] to cope with that cross when it comes. Good cross, amazing finish but cheap goal from our point of view.

"It was an encouraging second half but the goal is not there.

"The lack of quality there to turn these situations into clear-cut chances. We were in there. We were in a game, it was 1-1. We were both attacking. They used their chance."

Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce to MOTD: "We hope this can be a platform. But when you are in the bottom half of the Premier League it is very difficult to get back-to-back wins. It's very difficult to get one win.

"It's been a tough couple of weeks but the players stuck at it and got the result. Dwight Gayle had a great finish to last season and unfortunately got injured in a friendly. He's come back and worked extremely hard. He's reminded us all he is a scorer.

"You need to get a second goal and that second one did not come for a long time. Later on the substitutes made a difference."

Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce to Sky Sports: "It's huge. We tried to play it down beforehand but they've stuck together. We finished with three midfielders in the back four. The subs have come on, it's a wonderful cross by Jacob Murphy and Dwight Gayle finishing.

"You knew you need the second one. Big Joe [Joelinton] had a great chance. If that goes in it relaxes everyone.

"Dwight Gayle has worked tirelessly and lost a bit of weight to get fit. He's been a great pro. He's always played very well for me. It was a great finish.

"We've got an unbelievable tough gruelling period. It's a good start. A few playing today are getting over the virus - you have to be mindful of that."
